Evelyn Marie Lewis

For now I am ready to be offered; my time of departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. II Timothy 4: 6-8

Evelyn Marie Lewis, 88, of Prosperity, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at 1:50 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the home of her daughter Carolyn Williams Daniels of Glen Morgan, where she has resided for five and a half years.

She was born Evelyn Marie Lively on a large farm at Meadow Bridge, W.Va., June 4,1925 to Charles Thomas and little Ellen (Shafer) Lively, who preceded her in death.

She sang “Beautiful Dreamer,” for her graduation from Meadow Bridge High School in June of 1944 and was always so proud that she was the only one in her immediate family to graduate. She married Thomas Edison Lewis, the love of her life, August 18, 1945. They raised four children in the coal fields of Southern West Virginia. She raised her children in church where she taught them by her example. She enjoyed caring for missionaries in her home, feeding and serving them. She was a very giving person who had a great gift of helps and hospitality. She reminds us of the widow of Zarepath in I Kings 17:13-14 because her home and heart was always open to ministers, visitors, relatives and all those in need. It seemed that her jar of oil and barrel of flour never ran out as she trusted the Lord to provide.

She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, working in her garden, canning, and planting flowers. She always said that she felt closest to God when she had her hands in the dirt. She enjoyed reading poetry, working cross word puzzles, traveling and attending church.

She was employed by the Goody Shop in Beckley, Beckley Manufacturing Plant, Johnny Dollar Super Market and Krystal Klean Custodial Services where she retired in 1995.

She was of the Pentecostal faith and loved to attend her home church, the Family Worship Center in Beckley as well as visiting other churches, attending camp meetings and tent services.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of thirty six years who passed away October 9, 1981; Mother and Father in-law, Paris and Janetta Gwinn Lewis; one stillborn son, Tommy Lewis; two grandsons, Danny Ray Williams II and Joey Layne; one great grandson, Joshua Lyons; one infant brother, two brothers and their wives, Cecil (Edith) Lively of Texas and Russell (Eva) Lively of Hebron, Ohio; three sisters and their husbands, Ruby Lively, Laura (Robert) Woolwine, Lillie and Raymond Lewis of Ohio, Florence (John) Slayton; brother-in-law, Charlie Harris of Rainelle; two sons-in-law, Danny Ray Williams of Prosperity and Gary Kincaid of Florida.

Those left to cherish her memory are one sister, Madeline Harris of Rainelle; one son Kenneth Lewis (Kathy) of Beckley; three daughters, Brenda Lyons of Prosperity, Carolyn Williams Daniels (John) of Glen Morgan and Diana (Joe) Layne of Prosperity; four grandsons, Michael (Terry) Lyons of Coal City, Kenneth (Rita) Lewis of Tennessee, Kenny (companion Samantha) Lewis of Tennessee, Tommy (Donna) Layne of Princeton, W.Va.; four granddaughters, Dana (Greg) Christian of Peterstown, Diana (Don) Smallwood of Bradley, Lora (Kevin) Paugh of Maryland, Kelly (Ben) Beale of Maryland; one step grandson, Jesse Daniels of Glen Morgan; six great granddaughters; Miranda Lewis, Kimberly Lyons, Emily Smallwood, Josie Lewis, and Ireland Paugh; two step great granddaughters, McKenzie Christian and Cailyn Stover; three great grandsons, Roby Lewis, Levi Paugh and Kane Lewis; two step great grandsons, Blayne Christian and Austin Blankenship; a host of family and friends; her faithful and loving caregiver, Patricia Smith of Blue Jay.

Family visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., friends visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Rev. Patrick Hayes of Tennessee and Hospice Chaplain Delmas Wolfe will officiate.
