Leona Jean Aaron

OAK HILL — Leona Jean Aaron, 63, of Oak Hill, died on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born January 22, 1950, at Montgomery, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Alton and Margaret Couch Aaron.

Jean was a medical transcriptionist. She was a former Dietary Supervisor at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley and District Manager for P.M.T, Inc. She was a 1967 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill and attended the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene.    

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Shaler and Leona Couch; paternal grandparents, Sammy and Rosa Lee Aaron; aunt, Nancy Couch and uncles, Joe Couch and Charlie Couch.

Survivors include a brother, Aulton Aaron and wife, Pat of Oak Hill, their daughter, Jennifer Renick and husband, Danny and children, Destini, Alexys and Danny III, all of Scarbro.

She is also survived by aunts and uncles, Edna, Tommy and Bob Nasby of Beckley, Katie and Al Wiggins of Bridgeport, Melvin and Mildred Crouch of Indiana, Wanda Couch of North Carolina, Barbara Couch of Indiana; niece Helena and Daniel Stone and their children, Montana and Bethany; special friends, Nikki and Tommy Burgess of South Carolina as well as many other family and friends.

Jean will be missed by her dog, Maggie.

Funeral services will be on Friday, December 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Mackie Million officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Thursday, December 5, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Rob Nasby, John Lopez, Chad Wiggins, Charlie Fitzwater, Herman Byers, Danny Renick, Shay Couch and Casey Nasby will serve as pallbearers.

Larry D. Farley

NORTH LAWRENCE, Ohio — Larry D. Farley, of North Lawrence, departed this world on October 4, 2013, after a brief illness.

Born October 16th, 1938, in Warford, W.Va., Larry was a 1956 graduate of Hinton High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957-63. Larry moved to Massillon and worked 44 years at Republic Steel, retiring in 1998. In 1961, Larry married the love of his life, Dulcie Ruth Vest, and they celebrated 52 years of marriage in February. He was known as a devoted husband and father.

Larry was a jack of all trades, known as Mr. Fix It. There wasn’t a project or problem he wouldn’t undertake. He enjoyed working in his yard, gardening and automobiles. Larry was a man of faith and a longtime member of Anchor Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by his mother Dolly Edwards, father Watt Hurst, father-in-law James Moody Vest, and special cousin Frank Farley. Survived by his wife Ruth, daughters Tamra (Aaron) Ansel and Tina Mann, son Tim Farley (Stephen), brother Jerry (Judy) Hurst, sister Sandy (Homer) Crews, sister-in-laws Julia (John) Allen, Martha Williams, Linda (John) McKee and Joyce (Bill) Neely, brother-in-law Ben(Gayle) Vest, mother-in-law Lucinda Upton, grandchildren Phil Joseph, Raechelle Harber, Ashton and Albrey Mann, Lilly and Jackson Ansel, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Larry’s wishes, there were no calling hours. Burial was Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Luther W. Vest Family Cemetery, Jumping Branch, W.Va.

Sammy Eugene Forinash

Sammy Eugene Forinash, age 68, of Glade Springs, Daniels, WV, went home to be with the Lord at his home on Saturday, November 30, 2013.

Born on August 18, 1945, in Beaver, WV, he was the son of the late Lyle Ward Forinash and Marie Lucas Forinash.

Mr. Forinash was the owner and operator of Flow Technologies in Daniels, WV. He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended Virginia Tech for a degree in engineering. He served on the Mine Safety Board of Directors. Mr. Forinash had taught Karate at YMCA in Beckley, and also assisted with the Kids Basketball Training at the YMCA.

Mr. Forinash attended the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church on C&O Dam Road in Daniels.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Sonny Edward Harrah Jr.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 39 years, Vicki Steele Forinash.

Two sons, Samuel Ryan Forinash and his wife Nicole Ashley, and two granddaughters Grace Ann and Eden Isla of Wilmington, NC, Aaron Nolan Forinash and his fiancée Lealani Ai of Matthews, NC.

A brother, Johnnie Ward Forinash and his wife Melissa of Daniels, WV, and their children, Johnnie Jr. of Beckley, Jeffrey and his wife Dana of New Jersey, and Annette and her husband Todd Skaggs and children of Charlotte, NC.

Three sisters, Linda Sue Johnson and her children of Daniels, Todd and his wife Amber of Shady Spring, Lisa and her husband Robert Thompson and children of Daniels, and Sonya and her husband Allen Forren and children of Shady Spring; Kathy Lewis and her husband Kenny of Beckley and their son Kenny Lewis Jr., Betty Jane Harrah of Daniels, and her daughter Crystal Calvert and her husband Gregory and children of Daniels.

A memorial service will be conducted to Celebrate the Life of Sammy Forinash on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 4 p.m. at the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church, 152 C&O Dam Road, Daniels, WV, with Pastor Jack Thomas and Rev. Howard Wilburn from North Carolina officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church. In memory of Mr. Forinash, in lieu of flowers, please bring to the church a canned food item for the needy. Sammy always wanted to help others, and during this holiday season a food drive would have pleased him very much.

Pete J. Francesa

Pete J. Francesa of the McLean Addition, Beckley, passed into the presence of our Lord on Saturday, Nov. 30th, 2013, after a 13-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He was 72 years of age.

Born January 24th, 1941, he was the son of the late Z. M. and Adelma Francesa. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dea Francesa McDaniel, and brother-in-law, Richard McDaniel.

Pete retired from Roche Laboratories in 2000 after a successful career in sales.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beckley where he served on the Board of Trustees. Pete also served on the Raleigh County Board of Health for many years, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, was a former member of the Beckley Rotary Club as well as a Beckley Common City Council interim member.

He is survived by Beverly “Cookie” Thompson Francesa, his wife of 46 years; his nephew, Jim McDaniel (Vicky), and their children, Jason and Amber, niece, Deborah McDaniel, and her son, Joey; sister-in-law, Marilyn Montgomery, and her sons, Michael and Gant.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, at 2 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Friends may call at the mortuary two hours prior to the service.

Joseph Lawrence Gallagher

Joseph Lawrence Gallagher, 54, beloved son and brother, of Flat Top Lake, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013.

Born April 17, 1959, in Beckley, he was the son of Doris Alma Martin Gallagher of Flat Top Lake and the late Vincent O’Connell Gallagher.

Joseph was formerly employed by the Cotter Corporation at Schwartzwalder Mine in Golden, Colo. He also worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Beckley and Excel Home Builders. Joseph was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley. He enjoyed playing guitar, fishing, and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles.

In addition to his mother he is survived by brothers, Vincent Gallagher of Beckley, Michael Gallagher and wife Nancy of Barboursville, W.Va.; sisters, Rita Gallagher of Scott Depot, W.Va., Martha Baker and husband Wayne of Beckley; nieces and nephews, Andrew, Daniel, Thomas, Antonio, Mandy, Phillip, Anne, Adell; great nieces and nephews, Michael, Violet, Caleb, Hattie; his best friend, a golden retriever named Sadie and numerous friends.

A funeral liturgy will be recited at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus officiating. A rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Calfee Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Jones, Daniel Jones, Thomas Jones, Antinio Jones, Phillip Baker and Larry Lilly.

Debra Ann Shaffer Hodges

Debra Ann Shaffer Hodges, 53, of Beckley, died Sunday, December 1, 2013, at a local hospital following a sudden illness.

Born February 16, 1960, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Mrs. Betty Jo Shaffer of Beckley and the late Teddy Luther Shaffer. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Cathy Jo Simpson.

After working several years at the local Veterans Administration Hospital, Debbie assisted her husband, Charles Edward (Eddie) Hodges, in his administrative duties with Beckley Moose Lodge No. 1606. A member of Beckley Chapter No. 822, Women of the Moose, for 19 years, she had earned all degrees of merit.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Teddy Ray St. Clair and wife, Katherine, of Stanaford; sister, Judy Bragg of Beckley; stepson, Charles (Chuck) Hodges, II, and wife, Christi, of Kennesaw, GA; stepdaughter, Sheila Hodges Pack and husband, Scott, of Peach Tree City, Ga.; four stepgrandchildren; a niece and two nephews. Debbie was anxiously awaiting the birth of her first grandchild in March. Debbie was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and she loved animals, especially her black lab Dusty.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Ken Hawes of the Oak Grove Christian Church officiating with a special service of remembrance performed by Women of the Moose. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bettina Virginia Breeden King

Bettina Virginia Breeden (Snootie, Toonie) King went to be with the Lord suddenly at 9:14 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013. She was born on March 29, 1927, at home in Glen Hedrick, now Beaver, WV. She was the youngest of 7 children born to the late Joseph Henry Breeden and Roxie Allie Narcissus Chissum Pack Breeden.

She was a 1944 graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended Beckley College.

She married the late Joseph Ellis King, Sr., of Lyman, MS, on February 8, 1952, in Daniels, WV. They met at the Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital where they both worked and she was one the first employees hired.

Her two children survive her. Her son, Joseph Ellis King, Jr., and his wife Martha of Houston, TX, and her daughter, April Dianne King of Daniels, with whom she made her home; one grandson, John and his wife Susanne, and 2 great-grandsons, Carsten and Christian, and by her beloved dogs Daisy and Bandit along with her service dog Cessna.

She worked most of her life as a legal and medical secretary and lived with her family in New Jersey, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas before again making West Virginia home for the last 30 years.

She was an avid horsewoman, dog and cat lover and loved the outdoors and traveling to 48 of the 50 states and Canada in her RV. She loved working and playing on the computer and blogging with friends.

She was preceded to heaven by her parents and 3 sisters, Cora Mae Breeden Pettry, Fay Olivia Breeden Meador, Gaye Breeden Lewis, and by her 3 brothers, Henry Myrl Breeden, James Breeden and Jack Charles Breeden, Sr.

She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Freda Krise, Margaret Pettry, Peggy Turner, Martha Butts, Bobby Pettry, Lois Covey, Dotty Gaye Kantor, Mary Lee Cromer, Ginger Smith, Jimmy Breeden and Karen McLeod, along with many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to  Rhonda’s Pharmacy and the most caring Dr. Todd Bramlee.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Gospel Chapel, 1134 C&O Dam Road, Daniels, WV, with Pastor Luke Richmond officiating. Burial will follow in the Phillips Cemetery at Shady Spring. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.

Anna Lee Lilly, 90, of Greystone Drive, Beaver, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, Dec. 2nd, 2013.

Robin Ann Milam

Robin Ann Milam, 60, of Rhodell, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 29, 2013.

Born on September 15, 1953, in Mullens, W.Va., she is a daughter of the late James and Shelma Roark Wood.

Robin loved watching the news, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and spoiling her grandson, Shawn. Robin was a graduate of Stoco High School. She retired from Pinecrest Hospital following 25 years of dedicated service as a Nurse’s Aide.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Wood.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 42 years, Jimmy Milam of Rhodell; two sons, Jimmy Milam Jr. and Christopher L. Milam both of Rhodell; a sister, Joetta Adams and husband, Robert of Princewick; a grandson, Shawn Milam; two step-grandchildren, Hunter and Celie Duncan; a special nephew, Mike Wood of Shady Spring; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.

Daniel Lawrence Shawl, 70, of Beckley, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013.

Born May 10, 1943 in Emlenton, Pa., he was the son of the late Fredrick and Madeline Eckelbarger Shawl.

Daniel was president of Energy Machinery and a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Chris Shawl and a brother Wayne Shawl.

Those left to miss and love him include his wife, Mildred A. Minnick Shawl; daughter, Sue and her husband Eddy; son, Mark and his wife Vicki and grandchildren, Leah, Tyler, Willow, Ava and Haleigh.

Daniel will be cremated. There will be no service or visitation.

Charley Sizemore

Charles “Charley” Luther Sizemore, 78, of Corinne passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2013, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. 

Born July 20, 1935, at New Richmond, he was the son of the late Luther Erving and Dana Evelyn Blankenship Sizemore.

Charlie was formerly employed by Bartlett Tree Experts and he was Baptist by faith. In his leisure he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking especially whittling. 

In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda June Sizemore McKinney; two brothers, Gideon Sizemore and William Franklin Sizemore.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Charlie R. Sizemore and his wife, Alice of Corinne; four sisters, Mary Lopez of Corinne, Virginia Slavey of Mabscott, Linda Skaggs and her husband, Wilbert of Pluto Road, and Edna Beverly and her husband, Leslie of Welch Pineville Road; three brothers, Walter David Sizemore and his wife, Nellie of Herndon Heights, Robert Sizemore and his wife, Karen of Georgia, and Ronnie Sizemore and his wife, Gladys of New Richmond; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, seven step great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. 

Services will be noon, Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gilbert Dodson officiating. Burial will follow in the Thomas Wayne Shrewsbury Cemetery, Barkers Ridge.

CANTON, Ohio — Luther O. Sloan, age 91, of Canton, Ohio, passed away Friday, November 29, 2013.

He was born January 16, 1922, in Richwood, West Virginia, to James and Jennie (Smart) Sloan.

Luther retired from the Timken Company in Canton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by a sister and brother and survived by many friends.

Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood.

Interment will follow at the Richwood Cemetery, Richwood.

OCEANA — Charles Wayne “Charlie” Toney, 73, of Oceana, passed away on Tuesday,  December 3, 2013, at his home.

Alfred J. Walker, Jr.

LEWISBURG  — Alfred Jones “Al” Walker Jr., 69, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013, at his home in Lewisburg.

Born March 5, 1944, Al was the middle of three children of Alfred Jones Walker Sr. and Elizabeth Hill Walker. He spent most of his younger years in Slab Fork, W.Va. later moving to Beckley and graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School. Al then attended Hampden-Sydney College, graduated from Morris Harvey College and received a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from the Medical College of Virginia.

In 1974, Al moved to Lewisburg and was employed by Seneca Mental Health. He later held positions as administrator at Greenbrier Clinic, assistant administrator at Plateau Medical Center and program specialist with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources until his retirement in 2009.

Al served as an elder of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Lewisburg Elks Club and past member of the Greenbrier County Planning Commission. Al found great joy and pride participating in activities such as the Shanghai Parade and the Polar Bear Plunge where he was bestowed lifetime membership.

Al is survived by his wife of 38 years, Ann Hayne Walker and his three children, Mary Ingles Sievers and husband John of Garden City, N.Y., Alfred Jones “Trip” Walker III and wife Ashley of Crozet, Va. and Katherine Caskie Walker of Mt. Airy, N.C. Also surviving are six grandchildren as well as his sister, Katharine Walker Fernback of St. Albans, England.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Palmer Hill Walker.

The service will be held Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, 100 Church Street Lewisburg with Rev. J. Dexter Taylor officiating. The family will greet friends during the hour before the service and during the reception following the service in the fellowship hall.
