Jason David Arthur, 30, of Grandview, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013.

BALLARD — Opal H. Carden, 96 of Ballard, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the Peterstown Cemetery, Giles County, Va. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:30 a.m.

Shirley Ann (Meade) Chizmar

Shirley Ann (Meade) Chizmar, age 75, of Beckley, passed away at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 11, 2013.

Born on June 18, 1938, at Clintwood, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. Meade and Opal D. Lane Meade.

Mrs. Chizmar was a homemaker, and a member of the Open Bible Baptist Church in Beckley. She had made her home in Beckley since 1979, and had also spent her childhood in Beckley. 

Mrs. Chizmar was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny A. Chizmar, by sisters, Mabel Salyers, and Helen Spencer, and by brothers, George, Harold, Charles, Robert Randall and Buster Clarence Meade.

Surviving are her children, Johnny A. Chizmar Jr. of Beckley with whom she had made her home, and Cathy Chizmar Griffith of Beckley. A brother, Robert L. Meade Jr. and his wife Shelby of Florida; two sisters, Kathleen Gayhart of Lexington, Kentucky, and Sheila Hein and her husband Kenneth of Mechanicsville, Va. Three grandchildren, Danielle O’Donnell of Beckley, Kevin O’Donnell with the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in North Carolina, Preston Griffith of Beckley, and a great-grandchild, Brooklyn Dawn O’Donnell Siers of Beckley.

Funeral services will be conducted  at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Rodney Allen and Pastor Tim Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Macie Irene Farruggia

Macie Irene Farruggia, age 73, of Rhodell, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013, at the home of her sister Molly Mullins of Meade, W.Va.

Born on March 5, 1940, in Mullens, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Phillip Dunford and Mary Green Dunford.

Mrs. Farruggia was a homemaker, and attended the Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church at Crab Orchard. She had made Rhodell and Meade her home for the greater part of her life. Mrs. Farruggia enjoyed spending time with her sister Molly and also with her grandchildren, using her Ipod, working puzzles, and watching TV soap operas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Farruggia, by a stepson, Charles V. Farruggia, by sisters Betty Hensley and Helen Richmond, and by an infant sister, Edna Dunford.

Survivors include her children, Carmela Farruggia of Rhodell, with whom she had made her home, Sherry Richmond and her husband Danny of Rhodell (she and her sister Molly had also raised their nephew Danny Richmond as a son); stepsons, Billy Joe Farruggia and his wife Ann of Beckley, and Jimmy Farruggia and his wife Pat of Rhodell. A daughter-in-law, Sue Farruggia of Lexington, N.C.

Her sister and best friend, Molly Mullins of Meade; a brother Ernest Dunford and his wife Gail of Egeria, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Manny Farruggia and Brandy Richmond, and a host of stepgrandchildren. A special niece Kathy Lilly and her husband Eddie of Meade, along with a host of other nieces and nephews, are also surviving.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Roger Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Pete Smith, Dwayne Austin, Barry Lilly, Cody Wilson, Gary and Travis Mills.

Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Hanna

RICHWOOD — Helene Elizabeth Elmore Hanna died Friday, July 12, 2013, at home in Richwood, WV. She was 64.

She is survived by her husband, Patrick Alan; sister, Mary Shapard Elmore-Rice (husband Warren) of Mechanicsville, VA; sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith of Charlotte, NC; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Joe and Sharon Hanna of Camden-on-Gauley, WV, and Mike and Kristin Hanna of Cleveland, OH.

Most especially she is survived by her beloved daughter, Mary Chastain Flournoy (husband Max), and her grandson, Kent Alexander, all of Sandston, VA.

She will be cremated. There will be no visitation or funeral. A memorial service and burial will follow at a later date in Virginia.

William Mason Redden

MEADOW BRIDGE — Bill (Jupie) Redden, 66, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013, at his home following a short illness.

Born February 28, 1947, in Stickney, Raleigh County, he was the son of the late William Mason Long and Maxine Blanche Redden Lewis.

Bill was a carpenter who enjoyed his work. He loved hunting and fishing and his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Riggie Redden; his brother Dale Lewis and his stepdad Herbert Lewis.

Survivors include 3 sons William Mason Redden, II, (Scott Burke) of Kokomo, Indiana, James Mason Redden and Howard Lee Simms, Jr., both of Meadow Bridge; 3 daughters Patricia Gail Guilliams (Andy Selmon) of Staunton, Virginia, Rebecca Simms of Meadow Bridge and Pamela Thombs of Maplewood; 3 sisters Daisy Sparks of Van Buren, Indiana, Linda Romero (Bob) of Marion, Indiana, and Patricia Ann Jones of Meadow Bridge; his companion Constance Bowles of Meadow Bridge; ex-wives Theresa Redden of Meadow Bridge and Linda Redden of Kokomo, Indiana; numerous grandchildren and 1 great-grandson Alex Jennings Simms; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Steve Martin officiating.

Burial will follow in the Claypool Cemetery at Meadow Bridge.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Matthew Paul Wood

VICTOR — Matthew Wood, 29, of Victor, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.

Born May 4, 1984, in Beckley, WV. He was the son of Paul and Elaine Wood of Victor, WV.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Brandi Wood; and daughter Zoey; His parents, Paul and Elaine Wood all of Victor, WV, two sisters, Miranda Miller and husband John Paul of Bridgeport, WV, Alysha Caudill and husband Logan of Victor, WV; one niece Addyson Miller and three nephews, Reid, Jace and Jake Caudill; grandparents, Bill and Patsy Jarvis of Winona, WV. He is preceded in death by grandparents Willie and Nannie Wood.

Matthew was of the Baptist Faith. His greatest love was spending time with his wife and daughter.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at Sunday Road Baptist Church in Hico with Pastor Danny Legg and Pastor Allen Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.

Friends may gather with the family at the Church Monday from 12 noon until funeral service time.

Carl ‘Doc’ Woolwine

Carl “Doc” Gwinn Woolwine, 76, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at Beckley VA Medical Center following an extended illness.

Born on July 27, 1936, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Howard Clayton and Jessie Betty Lightner Woolwine.

Carl was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He attended Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church at Beckwith. Carl was a retired surveyor assistant for Leon Spencer Surveying for 47 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard Austin Woolwine and Larry E. Woolwine; and sister, Donna W. Ellis.

Carl is survived by an extended family of his sister-in-law, Goldie Woolwine, and niece, Lois and her husband John Matthews, many cousins and lots of friends.

In keeping with Carl’s wishes he will be cremated and a Memorial Service to be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home with Chaplain Paul Bricker officiating. Calling hours are one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to give a very special acknowledgement to Dr. Boyd and his entire team for the wonderful and loving care they gave to Carl during his stay at the VA Medical Center Hospice Unit in Beckley.
