Steven Howard Adkins

 HINTON — Steven Howard Adkins, 30, of 317 3rd Ave., Hinton, died at 8:15 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following a short illness.

Isabelle Campoy Barber

TAMPA, Fla. — Isabelle Campoy Barber, 78, a native of Holden, died Sept. 9th, 2010, in Tampa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 561 Main St., in Logan. Burial will follow in  Forest Lawn Cemetery, Peck’s Mill.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the funeral home.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Building Fund.

Douglas Roger Bragg

RUPERT — Douglas Roger Bragg, 38, of Rupert, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

He was born on June 6, 1972, in Akron, Ohio.

Mr. Bragg was a career logger and loved the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, maternal grandfather and his stepfather.

He is survived by his mother, Karen Bragg of Rupert; his father, Douglas Bragg of Summersville; two sisters, Anne Bragg of Springfield, Ohio and Shirley Bragg of Redwing, Minn.; stepsister, Crystal Wilson and stepbrother, Greg Shawver, both from Rupert; maternal grandmother, Betty Lipker and a maternal uncle, Butch Lipker, both of Akron, Ohio; a maternal aunt, Kaylene Houk of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; paternal aunts, Belinda Brown of Craigsville and Brenda Brown from Canvas; and his K-9 companions, Missy, George and Echo.

Service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Pastor Lee Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service. There will be no evening visitation.

Kenneth Harold Carte Sr.

HICO — Kenneth Harold Carte Sr., 68, of Hico, passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, following a short illness.

He was born Feb. 18, 1942 in Hico, and was the son of the late Harold and Jessie Hawkins Carte.

Kenneth was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a coal miner and member of U.M.W.A. and a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church of Hico.

Survivors are three daughters, April Cooper of Shawnee, Kansas, Paula Harper and Steve of Dayton, Va., Jeanette Maldonado and Danny of Jacksonville, Fla. And a son Kenneth H. Carte Jr. and Valeria of Hico; a sister, Betty Pardon of Biloxi, Miss.; four brothers, Jonathan Keith Carte of Manassas, Va., Galen Carte of Fayetteville, Roy Dean Carte of Hico and Larry Carte of Fayetteville; 18 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Pastor Bill Kincaid officiating. Burial will follow in Legg Cemetery on Stringtown Rd., Hico.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Dorothy Casey

On Wednesday, Sept. 8th, 2010, our most precious mother, Dorothy Casey, passed away at her home in Coal City, following a short illness. She was in her 88th year.

Dorothy Mae White was born at Itmann, on May 30th, 1922, one of eight children born to the late Grover and Virgie Harmon White. She is the last survivor of her immediate family.

Dorothy grew up in Matoaka.  She settled in Chicago, Illinois with her husband Paul and their children in 1959. A resident of Chicago for 30 years, she returned to West Virginia and settled in Coal City upon Paul’s death in 1989.

In her leisure time she enjoyed needle work.

The beloved mother of seven children, her daughter, Connie White preceded her in death.

Left to cherish her memory are her surviving children, Joyce Casey, Robert Casey, William Casey, Sandra Tucker, Gary Casey and Terry Casey. “Her memory is blessed.”  Dorothy was the doting Granny of 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and two great great grand children.      

And so now at the end of the day we her family must say goodbye to this our precious Mother and Granny. We loved you but God loved you best.

Funeral services will be today at 3 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Paul Zutaut officiating. Dorothy will then be taken to the Sunset Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the hour of the services.

Jinetta Daniels

CYCLONE — Jinetta Daniels, 78, departed this life Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010.

A celebration of Mrs. Daniel's life will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service on Sunday at the funeral home.

Gracie I. Meade

JONBEN — Gracie I. Meade, 95, of Jonben, formerly of Princewick, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010.

Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Duhring, W.Va., she is the daughter of the late Henry and Alvie Arrington.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Connie R. Meade and wife Rhonda of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and Wilburn N. Meade and wife Cynthia of North Port, Fla.; daughter, Shelby June Garten and friend Herb Kinney of Columbus, Ohio; companion Troy Edward Harmon of Jonben who loved and took care of mom; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren and sister Francis Fuda of Princeton. Special thanks to Pete Cook and his wife Trish, Billie Reeves and Wally Cantrell.

Gracie will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Rev. Jack Tankersley officiating and Macie Massey singing.

Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Vivian Jarrell Miller

On Thursday, Sept. 9th, 2010 our most cherished Vivian Ranson Jarrell Miller of Dry Creek, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. She was 72 years of age.

Vivian was born on June 19, 1938, at Saxon, the daughter of the late Carles and Nellie Daniel Ransom. Brothers, Clarence and Roy and a sister, Veronica preceded her in death as well as her paternal grandparents, George and Nellie Smarr Ransom, maternal grandparents, Arch Daniel and Ollie Manning Daniel Eskew, her step grandpa, Marion Eskew and he sister-in-law, Linda Ransom.

In addition to her family, her first husband, Bruce Jarrell preceded her in death also.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Roy Miller; her dear son, Ivan Jarrell and his wife, Vicky. The joy of Vivian’s life were her granddaughters, Shelby Lynn and Emma Marie. Mourning her loss are her sister, Frances Osborne and her husband Earl of Fairdale; brothers, Roger Ransom and his wife, Juanita of Eccles, Marion Ransom and his wife Beverly of Stover, Larry Ransom of Saxon and Oley Ransom of Beckley; a special aunt, Kathleen Jarrell, niece, Kathy Kinder of Charleston and a special friend, Joyce Gunnoe of Dry Creek as well as their families.     

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12th at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Roger Mullens officiating. Burial will follow in the Jarrell Cemetery at Dry Creek. The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of the service. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Rhelda Moles, 31, of Crab Orchard, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Gregory Arnold ‘Flipper’ Morgan

CLEARFORK — Gregory Arnold “Flipper” Morgan, 28, son of Gregory Ray (Daphne) Morgan of Avondale, and Deborah (Emmett) Browning of Clearfork, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010. He was father to Madison Rae and Olivia Grace.Service will be 1 p.m. today at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in West Cemetery at Rockhouse Mountain, Hanover.

Betty Pompie

On Thursday, Sept. 9th, 2010, our beloved, Betty Pompie of the Josephine Community passed away at the Raleigh Center following a long illness. She was 79 years of age.

Betty June Bailey was born on Dec. 3, 1930, at Durhing, she was the second of five children. Her parents were the late William Hector and Mary Bane Arrington Bailey. A brother, Leonard “Wink” Bailey preceded her in death.

Betty’s early years were spent at Goodwill. At the age of 15 she came to Josephine to live with her aunt and uncle, Ellen and Albert Fares. The Josephine community would become home to Betty where she was a well respected neighbor and friend to many people. As a young woman, she would meet Angelo Pompie, they would become soulmates. Married for 45 years, Angelo died on May 18, 1995.  Betty was an active and devoted member of the Besoco Methodist Church.

To Angelo and Betty’s union was born two sons who will forever cherish their memory. They are Michael Angleo Pompie and his wife, Regena of Shady Spring and Albert Glen Pompie and his wife, Diana of Daniels. Betty was the doting “Grandma” of Crystal Pompie, Jason Pompie and his wife, Erica and the proud great grandmother of Aiden Pompie.  She was the dear sister of Richard Eugene “Horse” Bailey and his wife Donna of Holden Beach, NC,  Virginia L. Yost of Baltimore, MD and Earl P. Bailey and his wife Hanako of Lawton, OK; and the fond sister-in-law of  Clara Bailey of Princeton. A brother-in-law, Samuel Yost has also preceded Betty in death. A large extended family survives as well as neighbors, and many friends.           

At the end of the day, we the Pompie family, will remember our precious Betty. “She was the world’s best cook, a faithful neighbor, the  BEST MOM, a Grandma that surpassed them all and one of God’s children.” 

On Sunday, Sept. 12th  at 3 p.m. we will remember the life of this good woman with a service at Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Dan Coalson will be officiating. Betty will then taken to the Sunset Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Angelo. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Sunday. Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Robert ‘Bob’ Shaver

ARCADIA, Fla. — Robert “Bob” Shaver, 64, of Arcadia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 after a short illness.

Bob was born May 14, 1946, in Morris, W.Va., the son of the late George Chester and Agnes McQueen Shaver.

He was a devoted Christian man who wanted nothing more than to serve God, be a good father, and to help anyone he could. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing on the boat with his sister Penny and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Revolution Church of Arcadia.

A sister, Frances Williams and two grandchildren preceded him in death.

Bob was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend to everyone.

He is survived by three brothers and three sisters, George C. (Carol) Shaver Jr. of Arcadia, Ronnie (Sheila) Shaver of Arcadia, Larry (Donna) Shaver of Arcadia, Drema (Ed) Crocker of Sarasota, Fla., Judy (Lee) Buckland of Scarbro, W.Va., and Penny Shaver of Sarasota; brother-n-law Perry Williams of Sarasota; five children, Robert (Carrie) Shaver Jr. of Arcadia, Lori (Glenn) Shaver-Myers of Beckley, Terry (Heather) Shaver of Arcadia, Leiha Shaver of Beckley and Alexandra Shaver of Beckley; nine grandchildren and his fiancee, Debbie Joyner.

Mr. Shaver was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at the New Beginnings Church of God in Glen Jean.

James William Shields

James William Shields Sr., a native of W.Va., formerly of Green Bank, died Sept. 2, 2010.

A viewing will be 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom, W.Va. Interment will follow in the Mingo Cemetery.

Ann Marie Smith

SCARBRO — Ann Marie Smith, 40, of Scarbro passed away, Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at her residence.

Born March 30,1970, at Oak Hill the daughter of Burl Smith and the late Donna Altice Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include Her son Matthew Harvey of Nitro, her father Burl Smith and wife Brenda of Hilltop; a sister Suzette Wingrove and husband Howard of Mount Hope; a niece Sarah Wingrove and a nephew Richard Wingrove, both of Mount Hope, and best friends Jill and Jack Nobles of Scarbro.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Jerry Bush officiating and where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service on Sunday. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Amy Lee Willis

CLINTONVILLE — Amy Lee Willis, 86, of Clintonville, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at Greenbrier Manor in Lewisburg, following a long illness.

Born July 9, 1924, in Graydon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Miller Barton.

She was a homemaker and a member of Shuck Memorial Baptist Church of Lewisburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gard Willis in 1999, and two brothers, James and Eugene Barton.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Lee O'Dell and husband, Brent of Lewisburg and Joann Kluender and husband, Luke of Bedford, Ind.; two sons, James S. Willis and wife, Barbara of Rainelle and Steven A. Willis and wife, Shirley of Daniels; a sister, Mary Ann Holliday of Mechanicsville, Va.; three brothers, Walter Barton of Dayton, Ohio, Robert W. Barton of DePere, Wis., and Harry T. Chapman of Prosperity; four grandchildren, Krista Adams and her husband Mark, Jeremy Willis, Jonathan O'Dell and David Kluender; one great grandson, Grayson Adams; and her aunt, Almeda Willis of Ansted.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at the Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor.
