Obituaries — Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Mildred Fullen Allen

Mildred Fullen Allen, 96, touched the hand of Jesus March 3, 2013, when she was called home to spend eternity with her Lord.

Born at Salt Sulphur Springs, September 3, 1916, to W.B. “Bub” and Ethel Trail Fullen, she lived her entire life in Monroe County.

Mildred is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Charles; son Larry; grandson Jeff; and siblings Elouise Skaggs and Bernette “Whitey” Fullen.

Surviving are sons Jim (Joy) of Sinks Grove; Bob, (Andi) of Union; and daughter-in-law Phyllis Ralston Allen of High Point, N.C. They called her “MawMaw” and were the lights of her life, grandchildren Jennifer Redifer (Tracey) of Blacksburg, Va.; Matt (Tracee) of Westminster, Calif.; Mark (Amy) of Bridgeport, WV; Tracey (TJ) of Lewis Center, Ohio; Leslie Wickline (Brian) of Union. She is also survived by her sister Beryl Sydnor (Bob) of Largo, Fla.; sisters-in-Law Lois Fullen of Union and Mary Allen of Ivydale, WV. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Eleven great grandchildren brought special joy to Mildred’s life as they visited her often. Colby, Jack, Luke and Zane Redifer; Nicholas and Reese Allen; Ty and Cammie Wickline; and Cortney, Avery and Ellie Lichtenberg of Lewis Center, Ohio.

From an early age, Mildred could be found in a special place at her home reading, which she did until her death. She graduated from Union High School and received her teaching degree from Concord College. Later in her life she drove to Radford College weekly to further her education where she received a master’s degree in reading.

Mildred was born to be a teacher and began her career in Monroe County right out of college. She taught at the Fortner one room school in Lindside and other schools throughout Monroe County. Mildred sparked the interest of learning in many children who received their education in Monroe and Greenbrier Counties and have fond memories of Mrs. Allen as their teacher. She completed a long dedicated life of teaching children at Ronceverte Elementary where she was a reading specialist. Upon retirement she continued tutoring nursing students at the county vocational school and spent time reading to elementary children.

Mildred was a lifelong Christian, actively serving her home church, Trinity United Methodist in Pickaway, in many ways for most of her life. She was a Sunday School teacher, Youth leader, a member of United Methodist Women holding a variety of offices, along with answering the call for whatever was needed.

Even though Mildred was considered a graceful lady, she physically supported her husband as a “farm wife” on their Wendover Hills farm where they raised sheep, cattle, hogs and other crops. She also supported his work with Ruritan National and was First Lady of Ruritan National in 1967.

In her community Mildred gave as she received. She was a Monroe County Belle; Farmer’s Day Queen; active in the Monroe County Historical Society; United Daughters of the Confederacy; Delta Kappa Gamma; Boards of the Monroe County Library Board and the Briar Nursing Facility. She was very proud to be a Gray Lady supporting the Monroe County Bloodmobile. Mildred was an avid reader and took great pride when she witnessed one of her grand children or great grandchildren reading a book.

The family will receive family and friends at the Groves Funeral Home in Union, Thursday, March 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. A service in remembrance of Mildred will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Groves Funeral Home, with Revs. Walter Ellison and Gene Fullen officiating.
