CHARLESTON — Mary Elizabeth Keeney Meece of Charleston, formerly of Lewisburg, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.
Born on December 30, 1929, in Rainelle, W.Va., “Liz” completed the secretarial program at the Charleston School of Commerce and worked for various companies during her career. After retiring from Bethlehem Steel, she became a licensed real estate agent and returned to Greenbrier County, where she was an active member of several organizations. She enjoyed volunteering for the Greenbrier Historical Society and was a popular tour guide at the North House Museum.
A rather accomplished artist, Liz enjoyed painting and doll making. However, out of her many interests, she loved her pets the most and was well known for providing a safe home for unwanted animals.
Liz is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel E. and Mary Fleshman Keeney; her husband, Elgin Powers Meece; and her sister, Betty Lou (Keeney) Brown.
She is survived by her niece, Kathryn Elizabeth Brown and her husband, Michael L. Reed of Charleston, and by great-nieces Ava and Maryn Reed.
Friends and family members loved Liz dearly. She was a favorite grandmother to Donna Ferguson, Timothy Clifford, and Megan Lewis. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality, steadfast loyalty and inner strength. She was an inspiration to all.
Funeral service will be 12 noon Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, with Pastors Dexter Taylor and Joseph Shreve officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Guests may visit one hour prior to the service at the church.
