Stephen D. Daniel

On Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, our beloved Stephen (Steve) Dale Daniel of Fairdale departed this life in a Palm Bay Florida Hospice House. He was 50 years of age.

Born on March 15, 1959, at Dry Creek, he was the son of Mary Cook Daniel Whiting of Saxon Road, Fairdale, and the late Quinford Daniel.

Stephen attended Fairdale Grade School, Trap Hill High School and A.C.T. School. He was previously employed by Winter Place Ski Resort, Dollar General and Pinecrest Hospital. As a child, he attended Cove Creek Community Church. He loved drawing, writing stories and taking pictures.

Steve was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thurmond Daniel and maternal grandparents, Ash and Wilma Cook.

In addition to his mother, Mary and her companion, Sam McClure, left to cherish his memoires are sisters, Mrs. Squire (Deborah) Pauley of Fairdale, Mrs. Joe (Veronica) Belcher of Glen Rogers, and brothers, Richard Daniel and his wife Drema of Saxon, Kevin and Andrew Daniel of Taylorsville, N.C.; his stepmother, Linda Daniel of Taylorsville; his maternal grandmother, Nina Cook of Arnett; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Earl Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Daniel Family Cemetery at Cove Creek. The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of the service.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Barbara June Davis

Barbara June Davis, 66, of Beaver, formerly of White Oak, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, while vacationing near Corpus Christi, Texas.

On Saturday, Dec. 5, the family will welcome friends for a one hour visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring. At 11 a.m. a memorial service will be held at the funeral home with Mr. Vernon Barley delivering the eulogy.

At the conclusion of the memorial service Mr. Barley will recite a scripture verse and two doves will be released in remembrance of Mrs. Davis and her late husband, Harold A. “John” Davis.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Donna L. Evans, 48, Sunrise Oct. 31, 1961; Sunset Nov. 26, 2009.

She was a member of Saddle Tramps M.C., Columbus, Ohio.

Donna was preceded in death by parents, Herman and Lyvonia Evans; brother, Jimmy Evans; sister, Marie Evans; and father of children, Manuel D. Saunders.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Greene

OAK HILL — Gerald “Jerry” Greene, 85, of Oak Hill, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 10, 1924, at Charleston, the son of the late Gerald P. Greene and Eliza Williams Greene. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Wood Greene and his second wife, Virginia Larese Greene; six sisters, Wilda Brogan, Nannie Siegrist, Lillian Davis, Ruth Ryan, Margaret Jones, and Lola Neccuzi.

Jerry was a graduate of South Charleston High School, owner and operator of Greene Distributing a Bulk Petroleum Company, a 55-year member of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM 120 Chapter 24, was a Beni Kedem Shriner, and a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Betty Pennington and husband, Pete, of Charleston; a stepson, Frank Larese and wife, Kay of Belle; a step grandson, Mark Larese and wife, Ann and step great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hailey Larese, all of Lebanon, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Frank Goff and the Rev. Keith Hostutler officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home on Friday.

Since Jerry was the oldest of this branch of the Greene family tree and his great-grandniece, Amy, was the youngest at three months, and that she is being treated at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Lexington, the family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made in the memory of Gerald Greene to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Robert H. Pruett, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009.

Frances T. Richmond

FAYETTEVILLE — Frances Thelma Richmond, 88, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, after a long illness.

Frances was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Ballangee, W.Va., to Dorse C. and Bessie L. Scarbrough-Lyons.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Oris “Doc” Richmond; son, Darrell E. Richmond; and brother, Willard Lyons.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shelby Jeffries of Fayetteville, W.Va., and Kathy and husband, Bill Sheridan of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, Paul Lyons and wife, Cecilia of Wilmington, Del., and Jerry Lyons and wife, Elizabeth of Clinton, Tenn.; and one sister, Helen Dean Richmond of Elkton, Md. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren of whom she was closest to Michelle and Tim and their children, Christopher, Caleb, Brandi, and Jason. She also has 12 additional great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Also, left to cherish her memory is Jackie Dean, special friend and caregiver for many years. Last but not least, she leaves behind her cat, Friskie of 17 years.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Larry Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery at Ballengee.

Christopher Lee Short

In La Mesa, Calif., after a constant battle with bi-polar disorder, Christopher Lee Short, 33, of Oak Hill, found the peace he was seeking on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009.

Born June 3, 1976, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., he was the third son of Dr. Robert T. and Mary Lou Sessler Short.

Chris graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1994, attended Coastal Carolina in South Carolina and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems from Strayer University in Washington, D.C. Chris also received his A+ Certification in May 2000.

He worked for RCO in Raleigh, N.C., and then for a trial lawyer firm in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Chris moved back to West Virginia and worked for New River Clinic under Carlos Plumley, his boss and a person he loved and respected very much.

While Chris had many hobbies nothing compared to the love he had for his daughter, Lyric. There wasn't a day that he didn't think of her. Photography, computers and kayaking were a meaningful part of his life; not to mention the History Channel and all the war films. He was an avid reader and his quest for knowledge never ceased.

Chris was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert E. Short of Beckley, and his maternal grandmother, Nettie V. King Sessler of Beckley.

Those left to cherish his memory include his parents, Dr. Robert and Mary Lou Short of Oak Hill; daughter, Lyric Astraea Graham of South Carolina; two brothers, Rob Short and wife, Barb of Gainesville, Va. and Todd Short and wife, Sandrine of Oak Hill; paternal grandmother, Marie Teel Short of Beckley; two nieces, Madison and Morgan Short of Gainesville, Va.; uncle, Dan Sessler and wife, Cindy of Newark, Texas; aunt, Patty Sessler Priddy of Oak Hill; aunt, Kay Short Chastain of Prosperity; aunt, Roberta Short Cooke and husband, Tom of Lynn Haven, Fla.; aunt, Judy Short Cimala and husband, Derek of Somerset, Ky. and seventeen cousins.

Murray Shuff

Murray Shuff, 84, passed away Dec. 1, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital, following a long illness.

He was born at Thayer in Fayette County, March 28, 1925. He was the son of the late Roy and Margaret Sheppard Shuff.

He was preceded in death by two half brothers Willie Richmond and Melvin Richmond; a brother Murphy Shuff; and sisters Clara Ashley and Freda Menefee.

He is survived by one sister Bonnie Whitener of Beckley and her husband Earl; a sister-in law Mary Shuff of Charleston; several nieces and nephews, and long time caregivers, Louise Maddy and Velma Taylor.

He attended school in Fayette and Raleigh County. After a short time in the Navy, he volunteered for Merchant Marine Combat Unit. He was selected to attend the Merchant Marine Officers School in New London, Conn. He graduated as a mechanical engineer, and made many trips to battle areas delivering supplies for the troops. After the war he was employed by the Gulf Oil Corporation on ocean going tankers, as a marine engineer, a position he held for 10 years.

Upon returning to Beckley, he married Gloria Vipperman. They had been married 52 years when she passed away in April 2007. They were co-owners and managers of Meadows Lumber Co. for a number of years. At age 62, Murray became the Safety Engineer, and chief boiler inspector for the WV Department of Labor, retiring at age 79.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Beckley where he served on several church boards, and taught Sunday school.

He was involved in many community activities. He was past President of the Beckley-Raleigh Co. Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Raleigh Co. Genealogy Society. He enjoyed working with the 4-H Youth Leadership program, mentoring young people at area high schools.

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Murray was also a Master Gardener who enjoyed organic gardening, and teaching others his gardening skills.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Retired Chaplin James Trader officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Nephews will serve at pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Garland Sizemore Jr.

Garland Sizemore Jr., age 57, of Midway, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at his home following a short illness.

Born on April 25, 1952, at Mullens, he was the son of the late Garland Sizemore and Ruby Spears Sizemore.

Mr. Sizemore was a former coal miner, and was of the holiness faith. He had lived for the past three years in Midway, having been a resident of Raleigh County for most of his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Damon Sizemore.

Surviving are his daughter, Stephanie Wessel and her husband Steven of Mt. Ulla, N.C.; his grandchildren, Tyler Gabriel, Ryan Gabriel, and Jacob Wessel; his former wife Patricia Sizemore of Mooresville, N.C.; five brothers, Samuel Sizemore and wife Marlene of Daniels, Danny Sizemore and wife Kat of Harmony, N.C., Kenneth Sizemore and wife Sissy of Daniels, Timothy Sizemore and wife Seretha of Westview; Paul Sizemore and wife Carla of Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters Dreama Hensley and husband Clifford of Crab Orchard, Melinda Farris of Coal City, Vanna Ellis of Soak Creek, Sharon Bland of Glade Springs, Melissa Sizemore of Mabscott, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

A service of Remembrance and Celebration of Life will be held 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at the Sophia House of Prayer, on Railroad Avenue in Sophia. There will be no visitation, but everyone is welcome to attend this service.

Lois Ann Smith

Lois Ann Smith, 81, of Pineyview, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009.

Born Feb. 13, 1928, she is the daughter of the late Charles and Maxine Preston Williamson.

Lois enjoyed quilt making, fishing, canning vegetables from her garden and being a homemaker for her family. She was a member of the Grace Community Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Paul ‘Eddie’ Thorne

Paul “Eddie” Thorne, 73, of Price Hill, passed away Nov. 30, 2009.

Born Dec. 13, 1935, at Sun, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Virginia Ann Mills Thorne.

Eddie loved to visit with his friends at the mall and loved to walk and tried to do it everyday. He retired from the Raleigh County Landfill, and attended the Open Bible Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include brothers, Johnny Thorne and wife, Clara of Scarbro, Leonard Thorne and wife, Shirley of Jacksonville, N.C., Jimmy Thorne of Williamstown, Ky., Raymond Thorne and wife, Linda of Prudence, and Tommy Thorne of Price Hill; sisters, Frances Rice and husband, Frank of Mt. ALDERSON — Charles Lee Wolverton Jr., age 58, of Alderson, formerly of Woodstock, Va., died Thursday, November 26, 2009 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Graveside memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 4, 2009 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, Va. with the Rev. William Fitchett officiating.

Ethel Canterbury Workman

Ethel Canterbury Workman of Rock Creek, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 30, 2009 at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Born at Rock Creek, December 29, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Miles and Bertha Rorrer Canterbury.

Mrs. Workman was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harl Workman; a daughter, Linda Fay Workman; a brother, Amos Canterbury; three sisters, Lettie Dickens, Delcie Scarbro, Macie Scarbro; and two grandsons, Robert L. Workman and Nicholas R. Foster.

She is survived by sons, Danny and wife, Ellen Workman of Morgantown, W.Va., Alan and wife, Sherry Workman; Johnny and wife, Judy Workman; and Tony Workman and companion, Holli Bowman, all of Rock Creek; daughters, Judy and husband, David Dickens, Peggy and husband, Richard Scarbro; Rose Mary and husband, Jerry Watts, all of Rock Creek and Helen and husband, Steve Foster of Dameron, W.Va.; a sister, Lena Piercy of Detroit, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Frances Canterbury of Ohio; 29 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loves ones.

Services will be 12 noon Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Rock Creek Community Church, Rock Creek, with Pastor Donnie Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Scarbro Cemetery, Rock Creek.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
