Carmen Albert Castle Sr.
BELLWOOD — Carmen Albert Castle Sr., 79, of Bellwood, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in the Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Born on Jan. 4, 1930, in East Rainelle, he was the son of the late Solomon and Hattie Sheperd Castle.
Carmen graduated from Meadow Bridge High School, served in the military during the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his son, Carmen A. Castle and wife Lora of Kill Devil Hill, N.C.; his daughter, Twila Rine and husband Jerry of Newark, Ohio; one brother, Otis Castle; and two grandsons, Jeremy Rine of Bellview, Wis. and Jerrod Rine of Newark, Ohio, and a special nephew, Larry Castle.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mike Whisman officiating. Burial will follow at the End of the Trail Cemetery at Clintonville.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

RICHWOOD — Rickie R. Ellison, 42, of Richwood, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, in Summersville Memorial Hospital.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, a Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood. Burial will follow in Mt Olive Cemetery, Tioga, W.Va.

Eddie Hatfield
MARIANNA — Eddie Hatfield, 58, of Marianna, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.
Born May 19, 1951, at Baileysville, he was the son of Charlotte McLaughlin Hatfield of Marianna and the late Harold Lloyd Hatfield.
Eddie was a deputy with the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department where he served since June 10, 1972. He was a 1969 graduate of Baileysville High School. He was an avid sports fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Boston Red Sox. He enjoyed visiting his daughters and playing with his grandchildren.
Eddie enjoyed sports and loved playing golf, bowling and motorcycle riding with his friends.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margie Miller Hatfield of Mill Creek; two daughters, Angie Juniper and her husband, Sam, of Huntington and Christy Bailey and her husband, Brian, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother, Harold Hatfield Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Turkey Creek; a sister, Brenda Moles and her husband, Phil, of Elkview; four grandchildren, MacKenzie, Evan, Christian and Austin and one to arrive in May; and his fellow officers with the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department.
A celebration of Eddie’s life will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Brenton Church of God, with Pastor Scott Cline and the Rev. Lee Fischer officiating. Burial will follow in Hatfield Cemetery, Baileysville.
Pallbearers will be members of the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Department and honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., today, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at the church.

David Eugene Lilly Sr.
David Eugene Lilly Sr., age 70, Cool Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.
Born on Aug. 17, 1939, at Blue Jay, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter Lee Lilly and Eunice P. Johnson Lilly.
Mr. Lilly was a carpenter and the operator of Built Rite Homes at Blue Jay, W.Va. He has a former member of the White Tail Hunting Club. He had lived most of his life at Blue Jay, having lived the past 15 years at Cool Ridge. He attended the Blue Jay United Methodist Church at Blue Jay, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by a daughter–in–law, Davida Lilly, grandson, Kevin Michael Lillyl and a brother Carlos Lilly and his wife Louetta.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mary Alice Ward Lilly; two sons, David Eugene Lilly Jr., and his wife Ann of Daniels and Russell Allen Lilly of Daniels; two brothers, Charles Lilly and his wife Ruby of Beckley and Howard Lilly and his wife LeeAnn of Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Lois Ann Quesenberry and her husband Harrell of White Oak; seven grandchildren, Kessa, Lori, Heather, Becky, Mathew, Tyler and Scott, and eight great grandchildren, Alexis, Emily, Cheyanne, Ryan, Josh, Jordan, Jason, and Jacob.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Paul Stadelman officiating. Entombment will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Arnold Mollette
RED JACKET — Arnold Mollette, 94, of Red Jacket, formerly of Warfield, Ky., died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at his home following a lingering illness.
Born April 29, 1915, in Warfield, Ky., a son of the late Elias “Bud” Mollett and Nora Parsley Mollett.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Nell Triplett Mollette, who passed away in 2003; five sisters, Mildred Staker, Ruth Horn, Myrtle Perry, Maude Hutchinson and Reba Chafin; two brothers, James Mollett and Harold Mollett.
Mr. Mollette was a retired educator, having taught 30 years in the Martin County and Mingo County School systems.
He was a WW II Army Veteran, serving five years in European Theater. Mr. Mollette was the pastor of the Red Jacket Community Church of Red Jacket, W.Va., for more than 55 years, and was recently named Pastor Emeritus.
Survivors include his son, Arnold B. Mollette and his wife Angie Cline Mollette of Pineville; daughter, Kathy Mollette Ditty of Ephrata, Pa.; brother, John Mollett and his wife Virginia of Kermit, W.Va.; his caregivers Amanda Parker and Carolyn Lecco and a host of family and friends. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Bays and her husband Guy of Indian Trail, N.C., Ryan and Bret Mollette, both of Justice, and four great-grandchildren, Bryan, Noah, Justin, and Zackary Bays of Indian Trial.
Service will be 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at the Red Jacket Community Church, with the Rev. Bill Snodgrass officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens of Maher, W.Va.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church, where friends may call (today).

Paul G. ‘Yankee’ Seligman Jr.
OAK HILL — Paul G. "Yankee” Seligman Jr., 62, of Oak Hill, died on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at his home.
Born June 19, 1947, at Old Staybrook, Conn., he was the son of the late Dorothy Locke Seligman and Paul G. Seligman Sr.
He retired as Regional Manager for a water utility supply company.
Paul was member of the First Baptist Church of Standard. He was a US Army having served during the Vietnam Era.
His daughter, Terri Massey, preceded him in death just three weeks prior on Oct. 29, 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue May Seligman; one daughter, Amy Crowell and husband, Ken and their children, Samuel Peter, Nicholas Paul and Julianna Shelby of Smyrna, Ga.; son, James Treadway and wife, Rachael and son, Brady of Fayetteville; son-in-law, Barry Massey and children, Jamie, Jordan and Joshua of Oak Hill; his twin brother, Frank Seligman of Beckley and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Standard with Pastor Ernest White officiating. There will be no visitation.

Elmer Lee ‘Pete’ Simpson
CLEAR FORK — Elmer Lee “Pete” Simpson, 63, of Clear Fork, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday Nov. 21, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital.
He was born March 29, 1946, in Clear Fork, a son of the late Charlie Lee and Belva Toler Simpson.
He was a retired coal miner having worked for Peabody Coal Company and was a graduate of Oceana High School. Pete was a member of the Clear Fork Independent Church of God, where he loved to sing and praise God and a member of the C.M.A. Group Thunder and Praise.
Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Sherry Tapscott Simpson; a daughter, Carol Rose and husband Jerry of Kopperston; a son, Michael Simpson of Oceana; two loving step-daughters, Christina Toler of Zolfo Springs, Fla. and Tammy Morgan of Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren, who he loved dearly Tyler Toler and Jordan Rose; two sisters, Phyllis Bishop and husband Bobby of Talcott and Peggy Hager and husband David of Clear Fork; a brother, Mitch Simpson and fiancé Susan of Lynco; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Pastor Hannibal Blankenship Jr. officiating. Pete will be laid to rest in Toler Cemetery, Clear Fork.
Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at the funeral home.

Nancy Pat Hamilton Lewis-Smith
Nancy Pat Hamilton Lewis-Smith, 90, of 104 Virginia Street, Beckley, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009.
Born Jan. 21, 1919, in Oak Hill, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward St. Clair and Kate Boone Hamilton.
Nancy Pat was an involved owner and president of the many corporations that comprised Lewis Automotive Group, a Beckley landmark since 1937.
She was concerned with education, culture, business, politics and church. She served as Past President of the Beckley Junior Women’s Club, the Beckley Woman’s Club, the PTO at Institute Elementary School, and organized the first intermediate Girl Scout Troop in the local area. She also served on the Organization Committee of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School where she later taught kindergarten. She also taught adult basic education. She helped organize such diverse groups as Highland Garden Club, the Women’s Resource Center and the Beckley Community Concert Association. She served as a member of the State Democratic Committee from 1964 to 1990 and as a member of the Beckley Housing Authority and Beckley Renaissance. She held memberships in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Women’s Club, Highland Garden Club, the Black Knight Country Club, Book Club, and Historical Society.
She remained an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where she had previously been President of the Women of the Church Organization.
Nancy Pat graduated from Oak Hill High School, and Ward Belmont College, and continued her education at Beckley College (now Mountain State University) and Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston).
She married Charles Scott Lewis Jr. who predeceased her on Dec. 5, 1987. From that marriage she has three daughters, Nancy Hamilton Haley, Langhorne Abrams and husband A. David Abrams, Jr., Mary Charles Sutphin and husband Kem Sutphin. She also has six granddaughters, Kate Haley Hatfield and husband Eric Hatfield, Ann Haley Donegan, and husband Thomas Donegan, Rachel Abrams Hopkins and husband “Chad” Hopkins, Sarah Abrams, Mary Kemple Henderson and husband Pretlow Henderson, and Rebecca Sutphin. In addition to her granddaughters, she is also survived by eight great grandchildren, Ansley, Evan, Braden, Jared, John Hamilton, Ella St. Clair, Will, and Cross.
On July 14, 1990, she married former Governor Hulett Carlson Smith, who survives her, and added to the family circle the children of former Governor Smith, Carolyn Smith Sheets and her husband, George, Mark Weston Smith, now deceased, Paul Luther Smith and his wife, Patti, Suzaine Wilcott and Christy Smith Merritt.
She was inducted into the Mountain State University Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007. This award had special meaning to her since this is where she met Charles Scott Lewis Jr. in 1939.
In addition to her many other honors, Nancy Pat was the first women locally honored as Paul Harris Fellow by the Beckley Rotary Club, an organization in which she was an active member until her declining health intervened.
In 1994, she and Governor Smith received the YMCA spirit of Beckley Award.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Beckley, with the Reverend Eric Miller officiating. Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley.

Mildred M. Stump
MULLENS — Mildred Inez McKinney Stump, 83, of Mullens, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at a Bluefield Care Center following a long illness.
Born June 21, 1926, at Iroquois, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Lessie Mitchem McKinney.
Mrs. Stump was a former LPN, having last worked at Grace Hospital in Welch. She was also a former employee of Steele Drug Company of Mullens and was a former co-owner of Stump Drug of Mullens. She was a member of the Highland Avenue Baptist Church, Mullens, where she was an active member of the women of the church, including the Nelson Circle, and was a member of the Laurel Garden Club of Mullens.
In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Stump Sr.; two sons, Charles S. “Charlie Boy” Stump Jr. and Bill Stump; one sister, June McKinney Fender; and one brother, Ray McKinney.
Those left to cherish her memory include one son, Dink Stump, and his wife, Katie, of Mullens; grandchildren, Sam Stump of Mullens, Alice Akers of Logan, Susan Cunningham of Charleston, William R. Stump Jr. of LaGrange, Ga., Charles P. Stump of Teays Valley, Ellen Zech of California, Christy Wagner of Ridgeley, Chris Ann Pierson of Winchester, Va., Eva Marie Burns of Harrisonburg, Va., and Adrianne Belyea of Apex, N.C.; 18 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Annette Blankenship of Pineville; two brothers, Randall McKinney of Barkers Ridge and Arlie McKinney Mitchem of Kokomo, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be noon Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gerald Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley.

Harvey E. Tankersley
CELVELAND, Tenn. — Harvey E. Tankersley, age 89, passed away Saturday at the family residence.
Mr. Tankersley was the son of the late Mattie Scott Tankersley and Charlie Tankersley. His wife Macil Leona Gibson Tankersley and 17 brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.
Mr. Tankersley worked most of his life in West Virginia coal mines. He was an avid Gardner and enjoyed working in his vegetable and flower garden. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and he had a great sense of humor.
Mr. Tankersley was a long time member of the Church of God and he loved his church. He enjoyed singing at church and he believed in the power of prayer!
Survivors include his daughter, Pamela Kaye Binion and her husband Cliff of Cleveland; his sons, Michael Dowain Tankersley and his wife Deanna also of Cleveland, Larry Arden Tankersley of Chattanooga, Harvey Kim Tankersley and his wife Heather of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his grandchildren, Morgan Binion Waldrop and Nikki Binion Rigdon both of Cleveland, Brent Tankersley, Ethan Tankersley and Destiny Tankersley, all of Myrtle Beach; his great grandchildren, Malachi and Emma Waldrop and Brenna Rigdon, all of Cleveland and his brother, Chester Tankersley and his wife Nadell of Shady Spring; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted 11 a.m. today, Tuesday at the North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes with Reverend Charles Hollifield officiating. Interment will follow in the Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes who has charge of the arrangements.
