Veronica Barnett

Veronica Barnett, 32, of Beckley, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Mary Berry Brady

PENHOOK, Va. — Mary Berry Brady, 82 of Penhook, Va., formerly of West Logan, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan, with the Rev. Glenn White officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pecks Mill. Her family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 17, at Honaker Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1079C Spruce St., Martinsville, VA 24112.

Mary Ella (McKenzie) Carver

CROOKED CREEK — Mary Ella (McKenzie) Carver, 87, of Crooked Creek, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the McConnell Tabernacle, McConnell, with the Revs. Randy Skeens, Orville Syner and Tildon Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Honaker Funeral Home, Logan, and one hour prior to services at the church.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to McConnell Tabernacle in lieu of flowers.

Dixie Cochran

God saw she was getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around her and whispered, “Dixie, Come with me.” And so, in the late evening hours of Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, our beloved Dixie Fortner Cochran of Harper went to be with her Lord following a long illness. She was 72 years of age.

Born Dixie Ann Fortner on Aug. 28, 1937, at Marion, Va., she was one of eight children born to the late John W. and Catherine L. Snider Fortner. Brothers Willie and Roy also preceded her in death.

A resident of Harper the past 13 years, Dixie lived for many years at Cool Ridge. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her family wants you first to know that Dixie Cochran was a Christian. She was a member of the Bible Wesleyan Church at Crab Orchard. Dixie loved to sing and play the autoharp, raise her flowers and her chickens, which she immensely enjoyed.

On Dec. 24, 1953, Dixie married her devoted husband, Earnest C. Cochran, who survives her. The precious Mom of four daughters, they are Vicki Sue Richardson and her husband Gene of Harper, Catherine Milam and her husband Doug of Cool Ridge, Kathy Barker who died in 2008 and Priscilla Jane Pinson who died in 2005. Oh Glad Reunion! To think, Mother and daughters are reunited. Her son-in-law Jerry Barker survives at Glen Daniel and her son-in-law Roger Pinson died in 2007. The doting grandma of seven grandchildren, Steven Barker of Pluto, Scott Richardson of Princeton, Melissa Barker of Shady Spring, Theo Richardson of Prosperity, David Richardson of Sophia, Timmy Barker of Eccles and Jennifer L. Demoss of Harper; the great-grandmother of eight great-grandchildren: Dustin, Briana, Marisa, Hanah, Michael, Justin, Aaron, and Kirstin; the fond sister of Buddy Fortner of Beckley, Jackie Fortner of East Liverpool, Ohio, Jane McDowell of Beckley, Emma Dafoe of Washington, Ill., and Catherine Wood of Eccles.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Gary Mills officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday evening, and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Her grandsons and a son-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Roberta Simmons Cohernour, 80, formerly of Renick, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Betty J. Ferrel Hudnall

GLASGOW — Betty J. (Ferrel) Hudnall, 79, of Glasgow, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Ansted Center, Ansted, after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her grandson Chad Galen Hudnall.

She is survived by her son and wife, James “Bugs” and Delores Hudnall of Victor, W.Va., Aunt Bert Moore of Glasgow, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Cedar Grove, with Pastor Gary Tucker officiating. Burial will follow the services at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Mary Ann Frances McClung

QUINWOOD — Mary Ann Frances McClung, 85, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 15, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte, following a short illness.

Born July 12, 1924, in Atlantic City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Louise Majane Mizrahi.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Alexander McClung Sr., in 2002, and a brother, Ralph Mizrahi.

Mary Ann had helped her family at The Hilltop Restaurant in Quinwood, and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Raymond A. McClung Jr. of Quinwood; several sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel in Clintonville, with Father Thomas Daigle officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the mausoleum chapel.

Meta Craig McGuire

ROANOKE, Va. — Meta Odessa Craig McGuire, 84, formerly of Gap Mills, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Mt. View Cemetery at Sweet Springs, with the Rev. Wesley C. Patterson officiating.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Gap Mills United Methodist Church at Gap Mills or the Mt. View Cemetery at Sweet Springs.

Harlima L. ‘Little Baby’ Mitchell

Ms. Harlima L. “Little Baby” Mitchell, 56, of Lester died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House, with family and friends at her side after a short, courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born Nov. 26, 1952, at Lester, she was the daughter of Mrs. Mary L. Mitchell of Lester and the late Robert Mitchell Jr.

Ms. Mitchell was a graduate of Trap Hill High School and was employed by the Lester Square McDonalds prior to becoming ill.

She never met a stranger and her sense of humor captured the hearts of many.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marquita Sue Mitchell.

Those left to cherish her precious memories in addition to her mother are three sons, Willie (Alisha) of Beckley, Sterling (Leita) of Oak Hill and Rocky of Mooresville, N.C.; two daughters, Barbara Echols of Mooresville, N.C., and Michelle at home; five brothers, Clarence of Bradley, Terry and Julius, both of Beckley, and Steve and Timothy, both of Lester; eight sisters, Rebecca Hills of New Bern, N.C., Bronzie (Roy) Hatcher, Yvonne, Tijuana and Rene, all of Beckley, Mary E. of Bradley, Sherry of York, N.C., and Drema (Carlos) of Kannapolis, N.C.; companion, Stanley Goff; 13 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha St., with Bishop Fred T. Simms and Rev. David Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Hattie A. Nuckolls

BUD — Hattie Arlene Moore Nuckolls, 93, of Bud, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in a Princeton hospital following a long illness.

Born June 20, 1916, at Gardner, she was the daughter of the late Frank Allen and Minnie Josephine Burgess Moore.

Mrs. Nuckolls was a homemaker, had been a resident of Bud for the past 60 years, was a member of the Bud Baptist Church, and was a former employee of the Wyoming County Board of Education where she was a custodian at Bud Grade School.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Otis Everett Nuckolls; a son, Shelby E. Nuckolls; and four brothers, Cecil, Paul, Warren Moore and Frank Allen Moore Jr.

Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Janice Marsh, of Mullens, Alice Buchannon and her husband, Terry, of Alpoca, and Norma Jean Webb and her husband, Howard, of Norfolk, Va.; three sons, Blaine G. Nuckolls and his wife, Marilyn, of Greenville, S.C., Larry R. Nuckolls and his wife, Cathy, of Bud Mtn., and Wayne Edward Nuckolls and his wife, Cindy, of Mullens; one sister, Nancy Bailey of Kegley; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 12 noon Wednesday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Joseph P. Phillips Jr.

FAYETTEVILLE — Joseph Preston “Joey” Phillips Jr., 52, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born July 13, 1957, at Huntington, he was a son of Joseph P. Sr. and Kay Dean Akers Phillips of Fayetteville.

Mr. Phillips served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Broadway, Va. For the last 15 years he was an Environmental Technician (Environmental Testing) for TRC Environmental. He graduated from Broadway High School and Blue Ridge Community College, Va., with a two-year degree.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, C.L. Phillips Sr. and Lee Akers; and grandmothers, Francis Ball Phillips and Dean Hoback Akers.

Besides his parents, left to cherish his memory include his two brothers, Gordon Craig Phillips and wife, Martha, of Fayetteville, Thomas Phillips and fiancée, Tammy Ayala, of Summersville; two sisters, Melissa McDaniel and husband, Chuck, of New Market, Va., and Jennifer Allen and husband, Kenneth, of Fayetteville; 11 nieces, Stephanie Phillips, Megan McDaniel, Erin Stewart, Cara Stewart, Courtney Stewart, Brittany Phillips, Madison McDaniel, Kaileigh Alfing, Jessica Hall, Bobbi Jean McMillion, and Mary Daily; five nephews, Timothy Phillips, Wesley Williams, Andrew Phillips, Jacob Hall, and Matthew Dailey; and a host of other family and friends.

Friends may gather from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville.

Rev. Cary D. Summers

KINCAID — Rev. Cary D. Summers, 85, of Kincaid, died on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Plateau Medical Center.

He was born March 6, 1924, at Ivydale, W.Va., to the late Samuel David and Dolphia Paxton Summers. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene Tribble Summers; son, Cary David Summers Jr.; and brothers, Carl Summers and Paris Dulaney; great-grandson, David Andrew Nelson.

He attended Laurel Fork Advent Christian Church, Laurel Fork, was retired from Union Carbide Corporation, Metals Division, at Alloy and was a Navy Veteran of WWII. He was an Advent Christian Minister for 52 years having served throughout West Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Morton Summers of Kincaid; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony Dwight and Joyce Carmen Summers of Beaver; daughters and sons-in-law, June and Malachi Proctor of Fayetteville, and Joy and Larry Nelson of Williams Mountain, W.Va.; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Robert and Janet Morton of Mooresville, N.C.; stepdaughter, Sharon Morton of Pennsylvania; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild. He is also survived by a very special aunt, Rena Nicholas.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with the Revs. Terry Johnson and Roy Runion officiating. Burial will follow in the Moore Fork Cemetery, Big Otter, with military graveside rites conducted by Clay VFW Post 4419.

Regina Gail Trent

CYCLONE — Regina Gail Trent, 38, departed this life Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in C.A.M.C. Memorial surrounded by her loving family following a short illness.

Born March 13, 1971, in Welch, she was the daughter of the late Robert Pondy Bailey and Ruby Lusk Bailey.

Regina was a 1989 graduate of Oceana High School, a homemaker, an active member of Toler Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, youth and Bible School teacher, singer, and did the church bulletins. She loved her dogs but most of all she cherished her husband and he cherished her as well.

In addition to her father she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Grady Bailey.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Larry Trent of Cyclone; her mother, Ruby Bailey of Cyclone; three brothers and three sisters, Linda Lusk and husband, Andrew, of Cyclone, Judy Fraley and husband, Wes, of Oceana, Randall Bailey and wife, Suzette, of Cyclone, Jackie Bailey and wife, Pam, of Oceana, Iverson Bailey and wife, Vickie, of Cyclone and Cindy Daniels and husband, Ryan, of Cyclone; several nieces and nephews and a host of family, friends and special friends at her church.

A celebration of Regina’s life will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Gibson, the Rev. Valdus Bailey and Ronald Bailey officiating. Regina will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Casketbearers will be family and friends.
