OAK HILL — Glen Calvin Buckland, 51, of Oak Hill passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital after a short illness.
He was born March 21, 1958, at Oak Hill.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Reaon; and an aunt and uncle, Emory and Erdine Avis, who raised him from the time he was born.
Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Cleo Reaon of Charleston, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.
His remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and where the funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Charles Basil Deweese, 69, of Mitchells Ridge passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley after a long battle with cancer.
Basil was employed as a roofer.
Basil was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Dicie Butcher Deweese; wife Edna Deweese; sister Carmen J. Weddle; brother Jack Deweese.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sister Shelia Deweese Richmond; two daughters Monica Deweese Moore and husband Winston Moore, Mona Deweese Justice and husband Gerald Justice; grandchildren Tony Barker, Rosella Dancey and husband Matt Dancey, Rochelle Harless and husband Brian Harless, Stephanie Justice, Heather Justice, Ashley Justice; great-grandchildren Kamern Harless, Lexie Barker, Taylor Harless, Gracie Redden, Jenna Justice, Haylee Dancey and Kamdyn Justice-Harris; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 15, 2009, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Pastor Gary Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow at Hot Coal Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tony Barker, Rodger Deweese, Carl Richmond, Donald Richmond, Jeff Moore and Billy Gilwater.

Sylvia Ann Dunbar
Sylvia Ann Dunbar, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, following a short illness. She was in her 84th year.
Born Jan. 9, 1935, in Hot Coal, W.Va., she was the daughter of John and Hattie Mae Lawson Spencer.
Sylvia worked at Beckley Manufacturing, was a member of Wesleyan Chapel, and loved bowling, watching soap operas, and playing cards, but her pride and joy was caring for children in her home. Affectionately known as “Nannie” she touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her beloved husband, Oscar Dunbar; a sister, Elsie Rehling; and brothers, Robert and Alvis Spencer.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Donna Jean Ford Stover and Fred A. Ford; grandchildren, Paul Jones, Freda Jones, Tim Sweeney, and Brenda Hawks, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and her feline companion Baby. She was also very special to and will be very sadly missed by the Atterson family, Lori, Patty, Mike, and Bryan.
As she requested, her body was donated to science at WVU. A memorial service will follow her pending cremation. She will then be laid to rest beside her husband in the family cemetery in Clear Creek, W.Va.

CROWNSVILLE, Md. — Elsie Mae Grubich, age 90, of Crownsville, Md., formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at the home of her daughter, Shirley Brammer, following a long illness.
Born on Oct. 26, 1919, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Walter Pierce Akers and Louvennia Rakes Akers.
Mrs. Grubich was a former manager of Walgreen’s. She was of the Baptist faith and had lived in Crownsville for the past three months, having moved from Scheresville, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Grubich.
She is survived by four generations.
Surviving include her daughter, Shirley Brammer of Crownsville, Md.; three grandchildren, Stephen Brammer of Crownsville, Md., Freddy Brammer of Reboth Beach, Del., Sandra Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Vivian Jewel Comer of Arizona.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Jimmy Ford officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LAYLAND — Helen Hall, 99, of Layland, died Nov. 13, 2009, at Salem, Va.
Born Aug. 18, 1910, in Layland, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Adam and Mary Mikulick Kosnoski.
Mrs. Hall was a homemaker and an active member of the Chestnut Knob Baptist Church at Layland. She was a former Sunday school teacher for the teenage class for more than 50 years and also was superintendent of the church for a number of years. She was a charter member and president of the Chestnut Knob Women’s Club and as a youth group leader, she worked with the Boy Scouts to help them earn their God & Country Award.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Hall; seven sisters, Barbara Sheaves, Anna Fields, Mary Adkins, Melish Gilkeson, Stella Bennett, Peggy Willis, Boots Mullins; and two brothers, Adam and Stonnie Kosnoski.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Miller and husband Jim of Salem, Va., Janet Bragg of Laurel, Md., and Sandra Levitt of Lafayette, Calif.; one son, Gary Hall and wife Greta of Fort Wayne, Ind.; six grandchildren: Robert Bragg, Doug Miller, Maria Bragg, Barclay Hall, Anna Taylor and Jennifer Levitt; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Chestnut Knob Baptist Church, Layland, W.Va., with Pastors Floyd Bolen and Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial will follow in the Layland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday evening at the church.

RAINELLE — Wanda Jean Lambert Simms, 74, of Rainelle, passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 14, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, following a short illness.
Born Dec. 19, 1934, at Neola, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late J.B. “Ben” and Flodie Louise Johnson Lambert.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arby Clinton Simms, in 1995; two sisters, Nancy Jo Lambert and Shirley Mae Fuller; two brothers, James and Melvin Lambert; and one grandson, J.D. Simms.
Survivors include three daughters: Christine A. Simms of Rainelle, Maxine McGuire and husband Rodney of Corliss, W.Va., and Connie Jean Burr and husband Daniel of Russellville, W.Va.; one son: Charles Clinton Simms and wife Janet of Morganton, N.C.; two sisters: Gloria Lee Lance and husband J.R. of Rainelle and Barbara Ann Zimmerman of Eugene, Ore.; seven grandchildren: Robert Simms, Tonya Brown, Sheena Brown, Adrianna Brown, Easton McGuire, Jeramey and James Burr; five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Mike Tincher officiating. Entombment will follow immediately. Born Sept. 16, 1926, at Sprague, she was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Gordan and Mary Angeline Pruitt, by her husband of 52 years, Edgar Smith, by brothers and sisters: Van Pruitt, Pete Pruitt, Georgia Pruitt, Phyllis Pedgo, her son Edward Leon Smith and a grandson William Inez Smith.
Surviving are Patsy Smith of Oak Hill, Charolette Johnson and her husband Gerald of Oak Hill, Loretta Neff and husband Eddie of Fayetteville, Robert A. Smith and wife Sandy of Salem, Virginia, Roger Smith and wife Marilyn of Oak Hill, Edgar “Eddie” Smith and wife Brenda of Oak Hill, Shirley Sutphin and husband R.D. of Oak Hill, Joy “Lorenda” Ortiz of Oak Hill; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Cox and husband John of Slab Fork, sister, Gay Lolli and June Clark of Vineland, New Jersey, brother, Jack Pruitt of Vineland, New Jersey, brother, Donald Pruitt of Seattle, Washington.
Reva worked as a headstart teacher for Oak Hill Elementary and the Dairy Dip in Fayetteville. She was a caregiver. She attended Crossroads Apostolic Church for 18 years. She will be sadly missed by family and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at the Crossroads Apostolic Church at Bradley with Rev. Jimmy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.
