Leonard Lee Butterworth
Leonard Lee Butterworth, 73, of 216 Nelson Street, Sophia, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at his home following a sudden illness.
In honor of Mr. Butterworth’s final wishes, he is to be cremated and memorial services will be scheduled for a later date.

Donna Kay Ward Goff, 43, of 615 Goodwins Chapel Road, Princeton, died at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at CAMC General Division in Charleston following a short illness.
Born June 25, 1966, at Sandstone, she was the daughter of Mary Magdelene Vandall, of Hinton, and the step-daughter of Elva (Pootsie) Ayers, of Sandstone.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Harvey Russell & Nannie Vandall and her paternal grandfather, Elva H. Ayers.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Magdelene Vandall of Hinton; step-father, Elva (Pootsie) Ayers of Sandstone; daughter, Erika Goff Goad and husband, David of Oakvale; one brother, Larry D. Ayers of Sandstone; three sisters, Shelia J. Ayers of Princeton, Lisa D. Ayers of Sandstone, and Sandra Ayers Newton and husband, Justin of Greenville, S.C.; one nephew, Carson Ayers Newton of Greenville, S.C.; paternal grandmother, Roxie Burdette Ayers of Hinton; and biological father, Ronald Ward.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton. Burial will follow in the Fink Cemetery at Sandstone.
Friends may call from 12 p.m. noon until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Herman Guy Hendricks
MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Herman Guy Hendricks, 74, of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Beckley, passed away, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a short illness.
Born June 3, 1935, at Surveyor, he was the son of the late Richard and Edna Bailey Hendricks.
Mr. Hendricks was self-employed, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of the Beckley Masonic lodge No. 95 AF & AM.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Sue Ann Hendricks in January of 2001; and three brothers, Coy, Amos, and Roy “Jeep” Hendricks.
Survivors include his current wife, Sue Creel of S.C.; two daughters, Nikki Goss of Mooresville, N.C., and Kimberly Hendricks of Virginia Beach, Va.; three brothers, Lacy Hendricks of Grand Rapids, Mich., Ross Hendricks of Clarksville, Tenn., and David Hendricks of Glen Daniel; four sisters, Alice Lambert and husband Roger, and Ocie Damron both of Shady Spring; Zada Covey of Ft. Wayne Ind., and Lola Hopkins and husband Eddie of Waverly, Tenn.; six grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Eddie Hopkins officiating. Military rites will be performed at the funeral home by the Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Ernest Lee Skaggs Sr.
Ernest Lee Skaggs Sr., 88, of Alderson, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a sudden illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1921, at Wolf Creek, he was the son of the late Robert Hickman Skaggs Sr., and the late Pauline Heslip Skaggs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Hickman Skaggs Jr., and sister-in-law, Louise Broome Skaggs.
Mr. Skaggs was a retired self-employed cattle farmer having raised Black Angus cattle for many years. He was a 1939 graduate of Alderson High School, where he loved to play football. Mr. Skaggs attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston and West Virginia University, Morgantown. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the United States Navy. Mr. Skaggs was a member of the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, where he was a former member of the church choir. He was a member and Past Master of the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 A.F. & A.M., was a past District Deputy Grand Master of the 7th Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, served as Deputy Lecturer for 44 years, and was the Senior Deputy Lecturer of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia. Mr. Skaggs was a member and Past Patron of the Alderson Chapter No. 119 Order of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed attending lodge meetings and schools of instruction for the lodge. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed working on his farm, riding his tractor and he loved to bale hay. Mr. Skaggs loved music, playing the guitar and enjoyed his daily visits around town, visiting with his friends. He was a staunch Democrat and supporter of the Democratic Party.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Eileen Okes Skaggs of Alderson; a son, Ernest Lee Skaggs Jr., and his wife, Tammy Smith Skaggs, of Alderson; two brothers-in-law, Emerson Okes and his wife, Diana of Princeton, and Lonnie Okes and his wife, Jane, of Salem, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson, with the Rev. Annette Carper and the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Burial will follow at the New Lebanon Cemetery, Pickaway. Friends may call Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 A.F. & A.M. will serve as pallbearers and conduct Masonic graveside rites. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be David Surgeon, John Surgeon, Harold Boggess, Ross Copenhaver, and the members of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and EMS.
In lieu of flowers, contributions of sympathy may be made to the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church Maintenance Fund, P.O. Box 477, Alderson, WV 24910.

Lois Raye Banks Warren
Mrs. Lois Raye Banks Warren, 82, of 206 Tennessee Street, Mt. Hope, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, 12 p.m. noon, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley after a long illness.
Born July 15, 1927, in Sugar Creek, Mt. Hope, she was the daughter of the late Charles Lawrence Banks and Maggie Louise Price Banks.
Mrs. Warren was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Hope, and was a beautician and homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Wilbur (Billy) Banks, James (Jimmy) Banks, and Lawrence (Lonnie) Banks.
Those left to cherish precious memories are her husband of 58 years, James R. Warren Jr., of Mt. Hope; sons, Richard (Monica) Warren of Union City, Calif., and Kenneth D. (Alicia) Warren of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Vickie L. Warren of Beckley; brothers, Leon (Maxine) Trigg of Beckley, Dennis W. Banks of Columbus, Ohio, and Edward A. (Faye) Banks of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Gloria J. Banks of Mt. Hope, Carolyn A. Smith of Mt. Hope, Emily A. Rickman of Xenia, Ohio; and Sarah E. (James) Lang of Columbus, Ga.; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at United Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Hope, with Rev. Phillip Copney and Pastor Sandra Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude for the care provided by Hospice of Southern West Virginia and Bowers Hospice House. A special “Thank you” to Patty Evans for her help. Aunt Carolyn, there are not enough words we can say to let you know how much your care of Raye meant to us.
