Brian Keith Berry

Brian Keith Berry, 54, of Coal City, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

Born Dec. 23, 1955, he is the son of Maxine Pack Berry and the late Leslie E. Berry.

Brian was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to his father, Brian is preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Berry, and nephew, Michael Reed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Brian Berry, II and wife Saprina of Princewick; daughters, Lisa Berry and Jay Caldwell of Roanoke, Va., and Britney Berry of Crab Orchard; brother, Leslie Wayne Berry and wife Althea of Coal City; sister, Sandra Drennen and husband Denver of Brocton, N.Y.; and grandchildren, Skyla, Zane, Brett and Jonathan.

There will be no services at this time.

David C. Bishop

FRANKFORD, Del. — David C. Bishop, 75, of Frankford, Del., passed away on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Del.

Born Nov. 5, 1934, to the late Alonzo B. and Virgie E. Billings Bishop at Bud Mountain, W.Va., he was also preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Clark.

Mr. Bishop owned and operated a blade sharpening business for many years. He attended Millsboro Wesleyan Church in Millsboro, Del.

He was a wonderful Husband, Father, and Pop Pop. He was physically handicapped and had many health issues but you never heard him complain. He loved watching ballgames, playing scrabble, reading, playing the banjo, guitar, and harmonica. He also did needle point and was even better at it than his wife, Sadie. “He loved to watch the grass grow while sitting under the maple tree.”

Mr. Bishop is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sadie Hylton Bishop; three sons, David Bishop and wife, Kathy of Millsboro, Del., Daniel Bishop and wife, Lesley of Laurel, Del., and Carlos Bishop and wife, Beth of Frankford, Del.; three daughters, Rebecca Muncer of Sunbury, Pa., Beverly Brown of Frankford, Del. and Glenda Roberts and significant other, Eric Bollinger of Frankford, Del.; a brother, Johnny Bishop of Elkton, Md; four sisters, Charlotte Fish of Tallahassee, Fla., Glenda McKinney and Janice Clark both of Bud, W.Va., and Gay Palmer of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; 13 grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, Anthony, Raymond, Seth, Christopher, Matthew, David, Chris, Robert, Seth, Nathan, and Logan; and three great-grandchildren, Jaden, Gracie, and Alyssa.

Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at the Bell Cemetery, Bud Mountain, W.Va.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

CRAIGSVILLE — William J. Church Sr., 79, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Inc., Richwood, with the Rev. George Peyatt officiating. Burial will follow in the WV Memorial Gardens, Calvin.

Clarice Irene Cox

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Clarice Irene Cox 77, formerly of Hinton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov. 8, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in Greenville, N.C. following a long illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1932, at Ellison, she was a daughter of the late Clacy D. and Una Basham of Ellison Ridge. Mrs. Cox was of the Baptist faith.

Preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ray Dean Cox on Dec. 27, 1998; two sons, David Eugene Cox and Larry R. Cox and three daughters, Kari Gamber, Wanda Lilly and Linda Fritto.

Survived by five sons, Dempsey Cox and wife Asa of Painsville, Ohio, Michael and Randy Cox of Fayetteville, N.C., Bobby Cox and wife Sue Pat of Fayetteville, N.C. and Danny Cox of Tennessee; four daughters, Rebecca Grimmett and husband Roger of Hilldale, Wilma Grimmett and husband Lester of Rocky Mt., N.C., Kathy Cox of Ohio and Janice Barksdale and husband Dennis of South Carolina; 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and one brother, Dean Basham and wife, Von of Massilon, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Sonny Angell officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday at the funeral parlors.

Kathleen Cox

Mrs. Kathleen Cox, 97, of 118 Cannaday St., Beckley, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital Hospital following an extended illness.

Born June 1, 1912, in Birmingham, Ala., she was reared in Harlan, Ky. and was the daughter of the late Evans and Sarah Miller Marshall.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Fred Wilson; daughter, Mildred Walker; five sisters, Willa Mae Grimes, Lucille Jackson, Bronzie Hall, Icie Bell Gibbons and Marie Hembrick; and one brother, Sterling Marshall.

Mrs. Cox was an active member of Central Baptist Church for over 40 years. She served faithfully in the Dorcas Missionary Society, Sunday school and Bible class. She was also active in the NAACP until her health began to fail.

Mrs. Cox was a fearless, determined, independent lady and a two-time cancer survivor. She was blessed in her later years to have love and tireless attention from her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Westbrook.

Mrs. Cox is survived by her sister, Mrs. Sara Daniels of Detroit, Mich.; two nieces, Claryce (Clarence) Allen of Bluffton, SC, Edith (Taylor) Cox of Detroit, Mich. and step-grandson, Shawn Walker of Hampton, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, a devoted caregiver, Ms. Renita Triggs, and a devoted friend, Mr. Clarence Owens.

Mrs. Cox will be missed by her Spiritual family and all who knew her.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Central Baptist Church Brooks and G Sts. with Rev. Robert I. Brown and Rev. Robert Morton officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pauline Novella Green Derringer

Pauline Novella Green Derringer, 82, of Beaver, formerly of Wyoming County, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

Born June 29, 1927, she is the daughter of the late Hugh and Corby England Green.

Pauline was a homemaker and the oldest of 10 children.

In addition to her parents, Pauline is preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene P. Derringer; daughter, Audrey Tomlin; a brother and sister; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and son and daughter in-laws.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Larry Sr. and girlfriend Cindy Canterbury of Hill Top, Edward Sr. of Mabscott, Randall and wife Missy of Mt. Hope, Preston Sr. and wife Janie of Mt. Hope and Charles of home at Beaver; daughters, Drusela Wiley and husband George of Beaver, Sherri Bolen and husband Larry of Spencer, N.C. Lovingly known as Nanny D to her 33 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Pauline has three brothers, Sydney, Elmer and Charlie; five sisters, Logen, Kathleen, Violet, Faye and Bonnie; several nieces and nephews; and long time friends, Rev. Ronald and Irene Adkins and Doug and Janice Richmond.

Pauline was a member for 37 years at Clifftop Missionary Baptist Church.

Anyone who knew her realized how much she loved her Lord.

The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Weismen for the wonderful care he gave to our mother for 13 years.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Rev. Ronald Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery, Beaver.

Pallbearers will be Loren Drew Derringer, Larry Derringer Jr., Fred Derringer, Eugene P. Derringer, and Eddie Derringer Jr., and Denver Mathis; honorary pallbearers will be George Wiley and Steve Ellison.

Jimmy Dale Dillon, 53, of Toney’s Branch Rd., Bloomingrose, W.Va., passed away at his home on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum in Orgas, with the Rev. David Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may visit one-half hour before the service at Pineview Cemetery Mausoleum on Friday.

Douglas L. England

JESSE — Douglas Lee England, 77, of Jesse, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born Aug. 24, 1932, at Alpoca, he was the son of the late Grant and Bessie Bailey England.

Mr. England was a born again Christian and was a deacon of the Coon Fork Baptist Church. He was a member of Local Union 7604, Kopperston, having worked in the mines for 321⁄2 years. He loved to go camping with his son, family and friends and he loved his family very much.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Joe England.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, four months, Kathleen England of Jesse; a daughter, Terri Woods of Matheny; a son, Gerald England and his wife, Vickie of Jesse; grandson, Jimmy Woods and his wife, Ashley of Pineville; granddaughter, Janelle Woods of Beckley; two brothers, Boyd England and his wife, Beatrice of Crab Orchard and Frank England and his wife, Katherine of Charlestown, Md.; and a sister, Wanda Walls and her husband, Larry of Cyclone.

A celebration of Douglas’s life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 in the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Ford, Rev. James “Bimbo” McCracken and Rev. Jay Morgan officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., today, Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

MATOACA, Va. — Clarence Matthew “Buddy” Miller Jr., 65, a native of Lewisburg, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009.

Inez Marie Rucker Hornsby Orler

SCARBRO — Inez Marie Rucker Hornsby Orler, 78, of Scarbro, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born September 9, 1931, at Pond Gap, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James and Betty Pearl Hapney Rucker.

Mrs. Orler was a homemaker.

Her first husband, William Clayton Hornsby, second husband, John Orler, son, James W. Hornsby and three sisters, Mildred Milner, Elsie Baker and Margie Mayer, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Gary W. Hornsby of Hilltop and Randy A. Hornsby of Danese; three daughters, Betty Thompson of Scarbro, Sharon Toney of Carlisle and Vicki Walker of Scarbro; six brothers, Delbert Rucker of Hughes Creek, Fred Rucker of Cedar Grove, Lonnie Rucker of Coal City, Ralph Rucker of North Carolina, Omer Rucker of Kentucky and Bill Rucker of Indiana; and three sisters, Louise Wiseman of Oak Hill, Nancy Barnett of Belle and Glada Callender of Coal City. Fourteen grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive.

Services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Ron Sanger officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.
