Mary Lena Jones Bennett
FOREST HILL — Mary Lena Jones Bennett, 98, of Forest Hill, formerly of Beckley, died 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Summers Nursing and Rehab following a long illness.
Born April 17, 1911, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Shield Ballard Jones and Rose Ella Brooks Jones.
A member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley, Mrs. Bennett was a graduate of Forest Hill High School and Concord College. After graduation she went to work for the Raleigh Co. Board of Education where she taught at Coal City Elementary School until she retired. She enjoyed reading and loved the outdoors, especially camping and fishing with her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Simeon “Sims” Bennett in 1973; one daughter, Linda Kay Bennett, in 1954; nine brothers, Opie, Landon, Lindsey “Slim,” Frank, Nathan, Woodrow, Murrell, and Clarence; and one infant brother and three sisters, Blanche, Pearl and Laura.
Survived by one sister with whom she had made her home for the last 3 years, Catherine Meadows of Hinton, formerly of Forest Hill, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Tommy Mounts officiating. Burial will follow in the Bennett Family Cemetery on Sunset Hill.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday at the funeral parlors.
Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

TULSA, Okla. — Letha Doris Clay Bialas, 77, of Tulsa, a native of Wyoming County, passed away July 24, 2009, in a Tulsa hospital.
She was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Maben, to the late Wayne and Alpha Shumate Clay.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Bob.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Michael Bialas; two daughters, Leslie Malachowski and her husband, Mike, and two children, Mara and Stevie, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Megan Potts and her husband, Davie, and son, Davie, of Tulsa; one sister, Nancy Clay and her husband, Thomas, of Saulsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Saulsville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Clay Family Cemetery, Saulsville.
Family will receive friends from noon until time of service at the church on Saturday.

GLACE — Beulah Mae Bostic, 84, of Glace, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.

George Ferrell Cook, 77, of Cool Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.
Born Feb. 23, 1932, he is the son of the late Leet and Grace McGraw Cook.
George loved NASCAR racing, his farm and enjoyed working. George loved and supported his children through all of their endeavors.
He was the owner of BFC Manufacturing and a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. He also attended Shady Spring Baptist Church. George served his country proudly in the United States Army.
In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 58 years, Tressie Cook of Cool Ridge; sons David F. Cook and wife Carolyn of Cool Ridge, George Duane Cook and wife April of Cool Ridge; and grandchildren Laura Anne Cook of Anapolis, Md. and Daniel Cook of Cool Ridge.

Paul Hood
Paul Darrell Hood, 61, of Fairdale passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, from a sudden illness.
Born April 2, 1948, at Welch, he was the son of the late Ernie L. and Pauline Jarrett Hood.
Paul was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the UMWA and was a member of Local Union 7604.
He retired from Eastern/Peabody Coal Company after 29 years of service. He enjoyed being with his friends, family and his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Eagen, and two brothers, Raymond and Jerry Hood.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Marcella Hood of Fairdale; a son, Johnathan Hood of Fairdale; two daughters, Marsha Bradley and her husband, Mitchell of Orange Beach, Ala., and Paula Hood of Fairdale; six brothers, Johnny Hood of Rock Hill, S.C., Larry Hood of Pineville, N.C., Roger Hood of Charlotte, N.C., Terry Hood of Oceana, Jeff Hood of Oceana, and Rusty Hood of York, S.C.; a sister, Francis “Muzzy” Morgan, of Dover, Tenn.; and six grandchildren: Marcie Bradley, Coleman Bradley, Tyler Holliday, Bryson Paul Hood, Talon McGraw and Jacob Nichols.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in the Evans Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Skeens officiating.

Charles Randolph Hoover
On Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, our beloved, Charles Randolph Hoover of Maxwell Hill, passed away in a Roanoke, Va. hospital following a short illness. He was in his 86th year.
Born on June 21, 1923, at Tazewell, Va., “Randy,” as he was affectionately known all his life, was the youngest of three children born to the late Samuel Popst and Annie McNeil Hoover.
He spent his early childhood in Tazewell, where he graduated from Tazewell High School. A graduate of VPI, Mr. Hoover was a professional engineer. Living in Beckley since 1967, Randy was a former resident of Montcoal, where he was affiliated with ARMCO Steel. He retired from Gates Engineering.
Mr. Hoover was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers. In 2007 he was awarded lifetime memberships in both the national and state and societies.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kathleen Harris Hoover; he was the dear father of one daughter, A.K. Hoover, and the fond brother of William B. Hoover, both of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with Dr. William de Prater officiating. Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Leonidas Dee ‘Scrub’ McGraw
CINCINNATI, Ohio — Leonidas Dee “Scrub” McGraw, 66, formerly of The Lane, Meadow Bridge, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1943, in Meadow Bridge, he was the son of the late Duffa Wilson and Mary Cordelia Bridges McGraw.
He was an electrical and instrument engineer for Procter and Gamble, and a member of the Addyston Baptist Church of Addyston, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene McGraw.
Survivors include his wife, Essie Rookstool McGraw of Cincinnati; a daughter, Valerie Lois Hutson of Cincinnati, Ohio; four sons, Jeffrey Leon McGraw and his wife, Kathy of Hamilton, Ohio, Gregory Dee McGraw and his wife, Melissa of Hamilton, Ohio, Paul Lee McGraw and his wife, Kara of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Daniel Wayne McGraw and his wife, Linda of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters, Virginia Dare McGraw of Naperville, Ill., Myrtle Ann Gill and husband, Edward of Mullins, S.C., and Mary Elizabeth (Suzi) Chambers and husband, William of Houston, Texas; three brothers, Grady Wilson McGraw and wife, Elsie of Princeton, W.Va., John Loye McGraw and wife, Janie of Carrolton, Ga. and Sherman Lee McGraw and wife, Debra of Naperville, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; two step grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

CLINTWOOD, Va. — Rhonda June Colbird (Smith-Edwards) Mullins, age 55, of Clintwood, Va., formerly of Bud Mountain, passed away at her residence on Oct. 27, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her father, Claude J. Colbird; a brother, Timothy D. Colbird; and a sister, Jane E. Colbird Rollins.
She is survived by her mother, Audie Colbird Croyle of Lashmeet, W.Va.; a sister, Jennifer (Larry) Davenport of Montgomery, W.Va.; a brother, John (Amy) Bennett of Kernersville, N.C.; three sons, David (Jana) Smith of Roanoke, Va., Christopher (Jessica ) Smith of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Dustin Edwards of Midway, W.Va.; one daughter, Toni Shannon (Shannon) Gilliam of Clinchco, Va.; and five grandsons, Paul, Nicholas, Zachary, Andrew and Benjamin.
She was an honor graduate of Herndon High School. She attended Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap, Va. She was a former radio disc-jockey at WPMW (C-92) in Mullens, W.Va. and General Manager of Taco Bell in Clintwood, Va. She was a member of the Inter-Continental Church of God.
Burial and graveside rites will be at the Bell Cemetery on Bud Mountain, Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at 1 p.m. Services will be conducted by Pastor Paul Shumway of the Bluefield LCG.

Robert Payne
Mr. Robert Payne, 86, of Laurel Terrace, Beckley, was called home Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, following a long illness.
Born in Coopers, W.Va., on June 21, 1923, he was the son of the late Joe and Bessie Payne.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Anderson (Payne), on Sept. 2, 1944, in Welch, W.Va.
Robert was a lifelong resident of McDowell, Wyoming, and Raleigh counties. Deacon Payne was a retired coal miner and Founder of the Disabled Miners and Widows Association, Member of Local Union 6869, and an active member of New Bethel Temple United Holiness Church, Beckley, for 36 years.
He was preceded in death by the late Joseph and Bessie Payne, a sister, Irene Payne, and two brothers, Willie Robinson, and Joseph Robinson.
He leaves behind to cherish and mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Anderson) Payne; son, Robert Payne Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Alice Turner of Hilliard, Ohio, and Barbara Aaron of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, many devoted relatives, friends, and a special friend, Deacon L.P. McConnell.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at United Apostolic Faith Church, 1010 S. Joyce Euretta Perry
Ms. Joyce Euretta Perry, 66, of Beckley, formerly of Mt. Hope, departed this life on Oct. 22, 2009, at 9 p.m. at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown.
Joyce was born July 5, 1943, in Wingrove, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late Manuel and Inease Evans Perry.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Inease Evans Perry, and a brother, Kenneth Ray Perry.
She is survived by her only child, Michael (Bridgett) Perry of Allen, Texas; two brothers, Manuel of New York and Paul Perry of Colorado; four sisters, Norma Perry of Beckley, Barbara Catus of Atlanta, Ga., Patricia Lewis of Oxon Hill, Md., and Naomi (Roy) Lee of Statesville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Brittany, Danarian, and Christopher; and several special nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A service of memory for Joyce will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Word of Truth Church of God in Christ, 911 Terrell St., Beckley.

This rainy day, Tuesday Oct. 27, 2009, can only show the sadness for the loss of our beautiful and beloved wife, mommy, ma maw, daughter, sister, and friend. Heaven has taken a great Angel!
Teresa Elaine Massey Reid, 52, of Oak Grove Road, Beckley, left this world, Oct. 27, 2009, to join her Lord and Savior.
Born May 2, 1957, in Beckley, she is the darling daughter of Wanda Massey Cooper of Coal City and the late Earl Eugene Massey. She faithfully attended the Oak Grove Christian Church with her family.
Teresa loved spending time with her family and friends, especially with her beloved grandchildren she adored. During her short illness, she never lost her sense of humor. If she was having a bad day, she would look for someone in worse condition than she. She was one of the friendliest and most thoughtful people a person ever could have met. She was loved by all that knew her. She spent her life caring for, and doing things, for others.
Teresa was a substitute cook for Raleigh County Schools, as well as a tax preparer for H&R; Block. Before this, she worked for Howard Johnson’s/The Travel Plaza for thirteen years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband, Michael Reid, who never left her side during her illness; son, David Reid and Missy Crouch; and daughter, Shelly Aurednik and her husband, Tommy, all of Beckley; two brothers, Earl Massey and Ricky Massey, of Beckley, step-father, Gene Cooper of Coal City, brother and sister-in-law, Shane and Jenny Paul of Fayetteville, N.C.; two lovely grandchildren, Travis Aurednik and Allison Reid, both of Beckley; nieces and nephews, Kellie Massey and Nikki Massey, both of Beckley, and Rosanne Paul and Chad Paul of Fayetteville, N.C., and one great niece, Kayleigh Russell. She will be forever loved, greatly missed, and always in our hearts.

John Earl Richardson, 92, passed away Wednesday Oct. 28, 2009, with his beloved wife of 70 years Mable by his side, in the home.

Born Dec. 25, 1958, in Logan, he was a conductor and brakeman for CSX Railroad. He was a member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church, past local chairman of CSX UTU Division, past head coach of Western Greenbrier Youth League Wrestling, past president of the Greenbrier West Athletic Boosters, and former assistant football coach at Rainelle Junior High School and Western Greenbrier Middle School.
Survivors include: his fiancee, Janette Painter of Rainelle; her three sons, Colby, Justin and his girlfriend Lynn, and Ryan and his wife Chandra, and their children, Robbie and Josie; his parents, Pattie and C. Betty Ann Vickers 78, a resident of Pinecrest Hospital, formerly of Mabscott, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, after a long illness.
Born April 21, 1931, in Bluefield, W.Va., she is the daughter of the late Elmer L. Young and Maude E. Young.
Betty is preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Eugene Thompson; second husband, Douglas R. Vickers Sr.; son, Ronald Vickers; grandson, Curtis Meadows; great-granddaughter, Leah Anne Thompson; sisters, Evelyn Johnson and Sandra Hazelwood; and brothers, Sonny Young, Ronnie Young and sister-in-law, Carol Young.
Betty was of the Baptist faith and attended the Hillcrest Baptist Church. She loved gardening, reading and spending time with special friends Frances Bailey and Elaine Hurt.
Those left to cherish her memory include her five sons, Douglas Vickers Jr. and wife Sandy of Beckley, Duane Vickers and wife Sherri of Tazewell, Va., Jeff Vickers of Mabscott, Darrell Vickers and wife Norma of Lincolnton, N.C., Danny Thompson and wife Joyce of Daniels; daughters, Teresa Johnson and husband Mark of Woodstock, Va. and Regina Meadows and husband Robert of Beckley; brothers, Vance Young and wife Norma of Virginia, Dale Young of North Carolina; brother in law, Jerry Hazelwood of Tazewell, Va.; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Dennis Epperly officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
