SUMMERSVILLE — Alan Bruce Buck, 55, of Summersville, died Thursday, October 8, 2009.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery at Muddlety, W.Va. with Rev. Harold Duskey officiating. There will be no visitation.
Interment will follow under the direction of the White Funeral Home in Summersville.
Shirley J. Cobb
Shirley J. Cobb, age 73, of Beckley, died Thursday, October 8, 2009 at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born on March 28, 1936 at Caldwell, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Orb James and Virginia Wickline James.
Mrs. Cobb was a former waitress, and was a member of the Salvation Army. She had lived most of her life in Beckley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eules W. Cobb; brothers, Roy David James, Charles Franklin James, and Edward Lee James; and a sister, Gladys Osivnik.
Surviving are her three children: Deborah Daniels of Richmond, Va., Sharie Shaw and her husband Keith, of Richmond, Va. and David Franklin Cobb of Coal City; a brother, Gene Autry James and his wife Patricia of Sophia; two sisters, with whom she made her home, Helen Marie Stanley and Alice DeHart of Beckley; four grandchildren, Stephen Michael Shaw, Wendy Shaw, Brian Shaw, and Laura Shaw; and three great grandchildren, Katlyn Smith, McKenzie Edwards, and Camryn Shaw.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, with Captain Bob Cornette and Captain Rob Barber officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Gladys Lucille Cox
Gladys Lucille Cox, age 85, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Heartland of Beckley.
Born April 2, 1924 at Wright, she was the daughter of the late Hiram Jacob and Pricey Moore Deitz.
Mrs. Cox enjoyed quilting, flowers, and listening to her favorite ministers on TV and radio. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Miller Gillian and her second husband, James Lewis Cox.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Loretta Jackson and husband Tommie of Tennessee and Carla Brown and husband Bill of Stanaford; four sons, Roger Gillian and Carl Gillian, both of Beckley, Dennis Gillian and wife Diane of Virginia, and Clark Gillian and wife Debbie of Grandview; three sisters, Ruth Farrish and husband Joe of Beckley, and Wanda Camp and Ruby Bennett, both of New Jersey; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2009 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley with Pastor Robert Barley officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Geneva Helen Bragg McGuire
RAINELLE — Geneva Helen Bragg McGuire, 74, of Rainelle, formerly of Meadow Bridge, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2009 in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a long illness.
Born on August 18, 1935 in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Gladys Pugh Bragg.
Geneva was a homemaker upon her return to West Virginia, while living in Baltimore, Md., Mrs. McGuire worked in a manufacturing facility assembling heating products. She was a member of the Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover P. “Mickey” McGuire; two sisters, Glenna Bragg Walker and Geraldine Diggs; and a brother, Herschel Bragg.
Survivors include her son, Patrick Dean McGuire and wife Annette and one grandson, Michael McGuire, all of Rainelle; several nieces and nephews; and many friends who knew and loved her.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, October 11, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Whisman officiating. Entombment will be in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville.

CLIFTON FORGE, Va. — Jerry Lee Patton, age 59, of 1506 Farley Place, Clifton Forge and formerly of Ronceverte, W.Va., died Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

Thomas Estel Richmond
BALLENGEE — Thomas Estel Richmond, 42, of Ballengee, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, October 8, 2009 following a sudden illness.
Born March 8, 1967 at Hinton, he was a son of the late Estel Howard and Nancy Lee Webb Richmond.
A 1985 graduate of Union High School, he was employed by Tom Nelson at Brookefield Farms at Lowell and attended the Trinity United Methodist Church at Talcott. Tom was an avid woodworker who loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Preceded in death by two sisters, Debra Lynn Richmond and Shirley Joe Fox.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 11 years, Michelle Talbott Richmond of Ballengee; one daughter, Kimberly Cales and husband James “Jay” of Clayton; two grandchildren, Rachel and Lillian Cales of Clayton; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Kay Talbott of Talcott; two brothers, Roger Dale Richmond and wife Betty of Ballengee and Freddy Ray Richmond of Ballengee; two sisters, Glenna Jane Marlowe and husband John of Williamsburg, Va. and Adena Faye Richmond of Ballengee; six nieces and nephews, Kandi, David, Cassidy, Skyler, Alex and Angel and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

RONCEVERTE — Aubrey Wayne Rickman, 80, passed away Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009.
Born Aug. 20, 1929, at Silush, W.Va., he was the son of the late Noah and Beulah Lambert Rickman.
Aubrey was a pastor of several churches in the area and was retired from Krogers. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairlea and was a Korean War veteran with the US Army.
He was preceded in death in addition to his parents, by a brother, Noah Herbert Rickman and a sister, Kathleen Rickman Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Bryant Rickman, a resident of the Brier Nursing Home; a daughter, Debbie Diem and husband, Keith of Caldwell; granddaughters, Laura Bond and husband, Russ of Beaver, and Nicole Smith and husband, Jason of Lewisburg; four sisters, Mescal King and husband, Bill of Yates Center, Kan., Patricia Rubio and husband, Tony of Tempe, Ariz., Jean Ludwig and husband, Frank of Fayetteville, N.C. and Janet Payne and husband, Mike of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; step son, Jeff Bryant and wife, Mandy of Rainelle; and step grandchildren, Cody, Chase and Emmarie of the home.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Fairlea with the Rev. Kevin Prevett and the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Lue Alta Sauer
On Tuesday, October 6, 2009, our beloved mother, Lue Alta Sauer, passed away in Vinton, Va. following a brief illness.
Born June 24, 1926, in Maben, W.Va., she was the only child of the late Roy and Violet Fanning of Fairdale, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl A. Sauer in 2003.
Mrs. Sauer dedicated her life to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse, working at the Beckley Hospital, Appalachian Regional Hospital, as well as many years at Raleigh General Hospital where she eventually retired from nursing.
She remained quite active following her retirement – enjoying reading, needlework, gardening, and her love for animals.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kylene Sauer of Vinton, Va.; her son, Karl E. Sauer and wife Penny of Fairdale; three grandchildren, Amanda Jeffries of Hinton, W.Va., Emily Sauer of Cranberry, W.Va., and Karl E. Sauer Jr. of Union, W.Va.; two great-grandchildren, Makaylah and Khloeigh, as well as her beloved little companion, her dog Talulah.
A private family service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2009 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, following cremation, with Rev. Glen Kuhn officiating.

Luther Thomas Stover Jr.
Luther Thomas Stover Jr., age 81, of Clear Creek, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a sudden illness.
Born on August 29, 1928 at Clear Creek, he was the son of the late Luther T. Stover Sr. and the late Margie Marie Henderson Stover.
Mr. Stover was a retired coal miner, and was a member of the UMWA. He was a former maintenance engineer in Maryland for 15 years.
Mr. Stover was a member of the Sycamore Free Pentecostal Church of God at Sycamore, W.Va., and was a US Army Veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Nora Stover on April 22, 2009, and by a brother, Norman Edward Stover. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Billy Gene Stover in 1982.
Mr. Stover was a loving and devoted father to his three children, Kathy Williams and her husband Timmy of Naoma, W.Va., Justin Stover and his wife Debbie of Clear Creek, and Nancy Bushman and her husband Dave of Annapolis, Md.; two brothers, Lowell Stover and his wife Shirley of Temple Hills, Md., and Alvin Stover and his wife Rosalee of Nanjemoy, Md.; two sisters, Gladys Marie Stover of Sugar Grove, W.Va., and Myrtle Ann Mauzy and her husband Lester of Sugar Grove; four brother-in-laws, Willie Williams and his wife Dorene, Herman Williams, Harry Williams and his wife Sharon, and Milton Williams and his wife Margaret, all of Clear Creek; one sister-in-law, Joy Bailey of Richwood, W.Va; six grandchildren: Jimmy, Jason, Jeremy, Jennifer, T.J. and Lauren, and 10 great–grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at Sycamore Free Pentecostal Church of God at Sycamore, W.Va. on Sunday October 11, 2009, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial will follow at the Stover Cemetery at Clear Creek.

Alan Land Susman
Alan Land Susman, age 79, of Beckley, passed away on October 8, 2009, after a prolonged illness. He was born April 8, 1930, in High Point, N.C., son of Ann Land Susman and Benjamin L. Susman. He was raised in High Point, N.C., and Bluefield, W.Va., and has one brother, Dr. B.L. (Sonny) Susman of Tazewell, Va. He married Sally Matz, and they have three children and six grandchildren.
A graduate of Bluefield High School and the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree, he was an Eagle Scout and played football at Bluefield High School.
Susman became interested in governmental service at a young age and had the honor of being Mayor of Bluefield for a day as a high school student. He was a member of the West Virginia State Senate for three terms and was a member of the West Virginia Turnpike Commission for nearly 30 years. As a former businessman and farmer, he operated several businesses, including City Finance Company, Tally Ho Farms, and the Bank of Mount Hope. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Susman, an avid horseman, was involved in many community and civic activities, including serving as chair of the Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA, vice-chair of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Beckley-Raleigh County United Way, chair of the Raleigh County Democratic Executive Committee, and member of the West Virginia State Democratic Executive Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Matz Susman; their daughter, Robin Susman Wartella and her husband Bradley Wartella of Beckley; son Benjamin Matz Susman and his wife Dixie Susman of Beckley and Thomas Land Susman and his wife Carol Susman of Charleston; as well as six grandchildren: Alisa Rae Wartella, Leigh Matz Wartella, Jennifer Rose Susman, Courtney Lynn Susman, Austin David Susman, and Michael Alan Susman. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. B.L. (Sonny) Susman and his wife Shirley of Tazewell, VA.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Land Susman, and father, Benjamin L. Susman, and his in-laws, Nathan and Rose Matz.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 11 in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rabbi James Kohn of the Temple Israel, Charleston, W.Va. officiating.
Friends may call Sunday from 1 p.m. until the service time. Zellia “Brownie” Richards Veneri
Zellia “Brownie” Richards Veneri, age 74, of Beaver, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Bowers Hospice House.
Born November 6, 1934 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Houston McKinley and Nannie Brown Blankenship Richards.
Mrs. Veneri enjoyed gardening and quilting. She was formerly employed as a Winder at the Beckley Manufacturing Plant and also a former employee of A-Mart. She was a member of the Open Door Church at Shady Spring.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Petrino Veneri; two brothers, Ronald Richards and John Blankenhip; and one sister, Evelyn Asbury.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Theresa Eastburn of Daniels; two granddaughters, Samantha Eastburn of Daniels and Lindsey Dishmon and husband Patrick of Wyoming County; one sister, Cleo Arvis and husband Paul of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2009 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Rev. George Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
