Steven L. Brown

WEST LAKE, Ohio — Steven L. Brown, age 37, formerly of Beckley, WV, passed away on August 16, 2012, in the Hospice House in West Lake, Ohio, following an extended illness.

Born on June 13, 1975, he was the cherished son of Jackie Crouch of Lorain, Ohio.

Steven had attended Crab Orchard Elementary and was an honor graduate of Independence High School and was an employee of CVS Pharmacy. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He was preceded in death by a cousin, Cheryl Harrah, and by his aunt Evelyn Deeds.

Those left to cherish his memory other than his mother are brother Johnny Mack Brown Jr. of Beckley, niece Trinity Grace Brown of Lorain, Ohio, grandparents Bill Harrah of Beaver, Norma Harrah Raines of Crab Orchard, aunt, Brenda Harrah Hearth of Crab Orchard. Four uncles Billy Harrah and wife Sue of Danville, VA, Richard Harrah and wife Veronica of Beckley, Jesse Harrah and wife Sheila of Conway, S.C., also uncle David Harrah of Beckley, as well as a host of cousins.

Steven loved dancing and gymnastics and having fun with friends and family. Steven, we love you and will miss you.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Steven Brown at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, August 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Leonard Joe Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Russell E. Crawford

WIKEL — Russell E. Crawford, age 90, of Wikel, WV, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012, at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, WV.

Born March 3, 1922, at Blue Lick, WV, he was the son of the late Allen T. and Maude Riner Crawford.

Russell had retired from the Celanese Corp. after 41 years of service in the Spinning Department. He was a member of the Lindside Christian Church and AARP. Russell loved wildlife, especially his little squirrel, feeding the birds and watching the deer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Gary Crawford, and two brothers, Ralph and Mark Crawford.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth Campbell Crawford, one daughter, Brenda Crawford of Lindside, WV, one brother, Frank Crawford of Peterstown, WV, one sister, Hallie Weikle of Peterstown, WV, daughter-in-law, Frances Crawford of Wikel, WV, two granddaughters, Jennifer Woodyard and Jessica Hale both of Wikel, WV, four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Nathaniel Woodyard, Morgan Handy and Katelyn Hale, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, WV, with Minister Dennis Trail and Minister Henry Conley officiating. Burial will follow in the Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, WV.

Samuel S. Evans

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Samuel S. Evans on Friday, August 17th, 2012. He was in his 84th year.

One of several children, Samuel Sands Evans was born on Woodlawn Avenue in Beckley on August, 15, 1928. His parents were the late John Thomas and Elizabeth Sands Evans. He has one surviving sister of his original family, Margurite Searight.

A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and VPI, Sam would serve his country in the Korean Conflict. Sam worked in the family business, Universal Corporation, and would retire from JO Lively-Toner Construction. He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

His first wife, Libby Phelps Evans, preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Drema Bias Evans; children, Lynn Plumley and her husband, Paul, Kay Duguid and her husband, Jim, Sam Evans Jr. and his wife, Kathy, John Hedrick Evans and his wife, Gina, Curtis Bias and his wife, Lisa, and Brad Bias and his wife, Debra; grandchildren, Paul Jr., Lee, Kristin, Mary Carolyn, Sam III, Deidra, Taylor, Summer, Tai, Casey, Carter, and Brad Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, among them, Tom Evans, George Shriver and John Patrick Thompson; his special critters, Tassle and Maggie.

The Burial of the Dead, Rite II with Communion, will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 21st, at 2 p.m. at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley. Revs. Jon White and Adeeb Khalil will be the celebrants. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, August 20th, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday. The burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Pallbearers will be Paul Plumley Jr., Lee Plumley, Casey Bias, Trey Evans, George Shriver, Tommy Evans, Paul Plumley Sr., and Jim Duguid. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Thompson and Louis George.

Renee Adkins Green

CHARLESTON — Renee Adkins Green, 55, of Charleston died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Keith George officiating. Family and friends will gather two hours prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date at Wallace Memorial Gardens, Sam Black Church.

Clifford Oscar Halsey

GLEN FORK — Clifford Oscar Halsey, 81, departed this life Saturday, August 18, 2012, in Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness.

Born July 6, 1931, in Sabine, he was the son of the late James Troy and Mary Lala Halsey.

Mr. Halsey was a retired coal miner having worked 44 years for Eastern Associated Coal Co., and a member of Glen Fork Baptist Temple. He enjoyed fishing but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his granddaughters and great-granddaughters.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Naomi Powers Halsey of Glen Fork; three sons, Clifford Larry Halsey and wife, Mary, of Beckley, Timothy Mark Halsey and wife, Andrea, of York, S.C., and James Aaron Halsey and wife, Donna, of Morresville, N.C.; one daughter, Viola Lynne Dobosz and husband, Brian, of Clover, S.C.; a sister, Shelby Jean Shumate and husband, Clyde, of Huntington; five granddaughters, Autumn Davis, Summer Halsey, Abigail Halsey, Sarah Halsey and Hannah Halsey; three great-granddaughters, Addison Davis, Noelle Davis and Kaelan Baynes; and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Halsey’s life will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2012, at Glen Fork Baptist Temple with Pastor Lee Swor and Pastor Clifford Larry Halsey officiating. Mr. Halsey will be laid to rest in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Casketbearers will be Carroll Brown, John Perry, Claude Shumate, Frank Hartenstein, Marvin Alfrey, and Raymond Smith.

Honorary casketbearers will be Harold Linville, Jim Sigmon, Elwood Powers, Larry Powers and John Mullins.

Douglas Morgan

SKIN FORK — Douglas Morgan, 70, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012, at his home.

He was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County, born April 27, 1942, in Welch, WV, to the late John Calvin Morgan and Laura Lambert Morgan.

Doug was a veteran of the Unites States Marine Corps, a retired coal miner and a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Paul, Garland and Telford, and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Douglas J. Morgan and wife, Sherry, of Saulsville and Norman Gregory Williams and wife, Connie, of Jacksonville, FL; daughters Betty Ellison of Pineville and Jorja (Jody) Houchins and husband, Curt, of Winston-Salem, NC; brothers, Delbert Morgan, Marvin Morgan, Darrell Morgan and wife, Carol, Harold Morgan and wife, Carla, and Aubrey Morgan and wife, Jennifer; sisters, Helen Salyers, Linda Egger and Patricia Ann Brown; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service, Tuesday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

SYLACAUGA, Ala. — James R. Moye Jr., 59, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012.

Basil Daniel Warden

Basil Daniel Warden, age 42, of Daniels, West Virginia, passed away at his home on Friday, August 17, 2012.

Born on September 17, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Hallie Martin Warden of Daniels, WV, and the late Delbert Leon Warden Sr.

Basil was a care giver for his mother, and was of the Christian faith. He had made his home at Daniels for the past thirteen years.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory other than his mother include his two brothers, Delbert Leon Warden Jr. of Daniels, and Penny Lee Warden and his wife Rebecca of Beckley. Two nieces and three nephews, Christon Warden, Briana Warden, Eric Warden, Robbie Warden, and  Austin Redden.

A memorial service will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Basil Daniel Warden at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating.
