Mary Beth ‘Cookie’ Altice

FAYETTEVILLE — Mary Beth “Cookie” Altice, 70, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House. Born May 14, 1943, at Beckley, the daughter of the late Emmitt Smith and Melda Marie Fulcher Smith.

In addition to her parents, Cookie was preceded in death in September 2012 by her husband of 18 years James “Jimmy” Ervin Altice Sr., and a stepson James “Jimbo” Ervin Altice Jr.

Survivors include two daughters Jimelle Dillon of Fayetteville and Tralissa Combs and her husband Lee of Fayetteville, four stepdaughters Tina Sue Francisco and her husband Bradley of Mt. Hope, Lisa Sue Sadler and her husband Jimmy of Daniels, Melissa Ann Stiefer and her husband Mark of Coal City, and Tammy Lynn Altice of Crab Orchard; one brother Tommy Douglas Smith and his wife Kari of Beckley; one aunt Jannie Knepp and her husband Tom of Beckley; four grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a very special good friend Eydie Polk and her husband Wayne.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Doug Alderman officiating and where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Pallbearers will be Lee Combs, Tommy Douglas Smith, Robbie Dillon, Craig Scarbro, Wayne Polk, and Shirley Blake.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801, and make sure to mention that your donation is in memory of Mary Beth “Cookie” Altice.

Helen Rushbrook Bazzarre

Helen Rushbrook Bazzarre, 88, of Beckley, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013.

Born June 20, 1925, in McAlpine, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nellie Rushbrook. Besides her parents Helen was preceded in death by a brother, Oather Rushbrook.

Mrs. Bazzarre was a graduate of Mark Twain High School and an active member of the Mark Twain High School Alumni Association. Helen graduated from the Raleigh General Hospital Nursing School and served in the Cadet Nurses Corps during World War II. She retired from the V.A. Medical Center after 30 years of dedicated work. At the time of her retirement she was supervisor of the Nursing Home Care Unit, a position she held for 18 years. She was a past member of the WV Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. While employed at the VAMC, she was a writer and director of several comedy plays depicting nurses and several “This Is Your Life” plays. Helen was an active member of the Raleigh General Hospital Nurses Association having served as president for several years. She was also a member of the National Federation of Federal Employees. Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Beckley having served as deaconess, Chairman of the Kitchen Commity and Fellowship Sunday School Class where she served as president for many years.

Helen is survived by her husband of 67 years, Roy Wadell Bazzarre; a sister, Alice Boothe of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Samantha, her beloved cat. She is also survived by beloved nieces, Mary Lynn Schnurr of Virginia and Joyce Dair Maytachak of Sterling Heights, Mich.; a nephew, Edy Rushbrook of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 12 noon on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Beckley with Pastor Doc Adkins officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church, 422 Neville St., Beckley, WV 25801, or the Raleigh County Humane Society, 325 Grey Flats Road, Beckley, WV 25801.
