Arlie Harvey Pugh, U.S. Navy Retired
Arlie Pugh went to be with our Lord on January 24, 2013, in Ozark, Alabama.
He was born October 4, 1930, at Backus, W.Va., to Samuel H. and Ella E. Gill Pugh.
Those left to mourn our beloved brother and father are sons William, Robert and Scott Pugh; daughter Rebecca Buckland; six grandchildren, Leslie, Garrett, Ryan, Katherine, Lindsey and Emma; one great-grand son, Brody; brothers: Ralph Pugh of Layland, W.Va., Denny Pugh of Tupelo, Miss., and Harmon Pugh of Piney View, W.Va.; sisters: Maggie Caudell, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Dorothy Anderson Laurel, Md., and Verna Asbury, Jacksonville, Fla.
Preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters. His son Michael passed away in March 2013.
Arlie served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring on June 12, 1967. He served on the Comcruiser Destroyer Flotilla 4 teaching Skills and Career information from 1960 to 1967. He also worked as part of the Manned Space Craft Recovery Team at Cape Kennedy, Fla.
Arlie was a member of the Kernan Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. Also a 47-year member of the Masonic Lodge most recently the Marion-Dunn Lodge 19 in Ocala, Fla.
Graveside memorial services will be Sunday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at the Harrah Cemetery, Backus, W.Va. Masonic services will conducted by the Laurel Lodge 104 of Danese, W.Va.
Beverly Annie Sapp
Beverly Annie Sapp, 71, of Sophia, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013.
Born August 2, 1941, at Hot Coal, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Cleophaus and Bertha Mae Doss Steele.
Beverly loved Betty Boop, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith and attended the Clifftop Baptist Church on Airport Road.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty and Linda; a brother, Cleophaus Steele Jr.; a grandson, Stephen Ferguson; a nephew, Troy Wilburn; and a sister-in-law whom she loved like a sister, Shelby Doss.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of more than 56 years, James Sapp Sr.; two daughters, Nancy Maxwell and husband, John, of Sophia and Tammy Sapp Perkins and husband, Gene, of Soak Creek; a son, James Edward Sapp Jr. and wife, Jeni, of Bolt; grandchildren, Misty Jarrell, Kristy Ferguson, Melissa Jarrell, Crystal Sapp, Angle Sapp, Ashley Sapp, and James Michael Sapp; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, John Steele of Salem, Va.; two sisters, Carol Morris of Pearisburg, Va., and Sherry Christian of Virginia; a special niece, Tina Doss of McAlpine; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Services to celebrate Beverly’s life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2013, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia. Following the services Beverly will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the funeral home.
