Edna Farris Harvey Turner
Edna Farris Harvey Turner, 84, of Naoma, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 11, 2009.
Born on Jan. 23, 1925, at Echart, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Kenna and Bessie Lusk Harvey.
She was first and foremost, a Christian since the age of 16. She was founder of the Turner Family Singers who performed at hundreds of funerals over the past 25 years. Her second love was Dad, Covey E. Turner. When he returned from World War II, they were married by F.P. Cook in August of 1945. The love she had for Dad is beyond words and when he died in 1990, Mom started to slowly slip away from us.
Mom raised us children to work, serve Jesus and to never fail to be a good neighbor. Through her and Dad, we learned what a closeknit family is about. Mom loved to cook and was always asked to bring her wonderful chicken and dumplings, beef roasts and biscuits to family and church get-togethers. She loved growing flowers and sharing them with others.
Mom sewed and made many quilts through the yeas and quilted with the sisters from her church. She loved her church family so much and grieved with each passing. Two of those still here, Virginia Bonds and Mabel Brown, were her best friends.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Warner Lee Harvey and W. Jerry Harvey; a son, Covey Wayne Turner; step mother, Opal Lusk Harvey; sisters-in-law, June Poore, Violet Mooney, Hazel Brown and Loretta Harvey.
Survivors include four children, Judy and Wayne Griffy, Rosemary and George Miller, William “Rocky” and Sue Turner; and the Rev. Benny E. and Debbie Turner, all of Naoma; sisters, Bonnie (Harvey) and Tom Pendry of Matheny, Betty (Harvey) Rock of Roanoke, Va.; brothers, Henry and Virginia Harvey of Bim, W.Va., Ralph and Debbie Harvey of Greenville, Tenn., Allen D. and Lucy Harvey of Bald Knob, Donnie and Orpha Harvey of Cyclone, Lee and Brenda Harvey of Glen Fork; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Special thanks to the employees of Pine Lodge Nursing Home, Beckley.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Delbert Freewill Baptist Church, Drews Creek, Naoma, with the Rev. Danny Gilfillen officiating. Burial will follow in the Cook Cemetery at Drews Creek, Naoma.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Saturday at the church.
