Sandra Barber

Sandra Barber, 41, of Crab Orchard, departed this life Monday, May 18, 2009.

Born May 16, 1968, in Welch, she was the daughter of Franklin Dewey and Janet Juanita Lester Barber.

Sandy was a member of Clear Fork Valley Baptist Church; she enjoyed riding her Harley Motorcycle, fishing, NASCAR fan, Virginia Tech fan. But most of all she enjoyed being with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Cubby Barber, whom she missed very much.

Those left to cherish her memory are her parents Frankie and Janet Barber of Lillydale; two sisters, Rebecca Mullens and husband, Steven, of Pineville and Kelly Cook and husband, Tod, of Hanover; two nephews, Jonathan Barber and wife, Rishona, of Oceana and Jacob Mullens of Pineville; three nieces, Valarie Mullens of Alaska, Jessica Mullens of Pineville and Kayla Barber Short and husband, Preston, of Pineville; a special friend, Ann Jessie of Roanoke, Va.; a special neighbor, Mary Brown of Crab Orchard; and a host of friends.

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be 1 p.m. today, Friday, May 22, 2009, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Erwin Gregory officiating.

In keeping with Sandra’s wishes her body will be cremated.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of service today.

Diane Marie Brown

On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Diane Marie Brown of Bradley passed away at the Bowers Hospice House, following a long illness. The beloved mother of Ian Brown, Diane was 51 years of age.

Donna Sue Christensen

GARDNER, Ill. — Donna Sue Christensen, age 63, of Gardner, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Morris Hospital in Morris, Ill.

Born May 3, 1946, in Paint Creek, W.Va., to the late Joe Alfred and Tinis Margaret (nee Rinehart) Hall.

Surviving are her husband, Rodger M. Christensen of Gardner; two sons, Robert and Richard Christensen, both of Gardner; one daughter, Christina (Greg) Eddington of Golconda, Ill.; three grandchildren, Katelyn, Allyson, and Adriene Sue Eddington; four brothers, Blaine (Shirley) Tyree of Scarbro, W.Va., Bill (Jean) Tyree of Austin Town, Ohio, Nick (Joyce) Hall of Scarbro, and Joey (Margaret) Hall of Scarbro; three sisters, Wanda Thompson of Scarbro, Rosemary Waldron of Joliet, Ill., and Jane Bell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 26 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Preceding her in death were one brother, Wayne Hall, and two nephews.

Funeral services were at the Reddick United Methodist Church in Reddick, Ill., Monday, May 18, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Dennis Brooks officiating. Interment was in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.

The visitation was at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., Braidwood Chapel, Sunday, May 17, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Earnest Troy Cochran

ACCOVLLE — Earnest Troy Cochran, 59, of Accoville, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at his residence.

Born July 31, 1949, at Crown, he was the son of the late Luther and Esta Willis Cochran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hollace “Holly” Cochran.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Kelly and her husband, Steven, of the home; a son, Joey of the home; two sisters, Pauline Smith and her husband, Barry, of Milton and Carolyn Woodall and her husband, Charlie, of Hamlin; and four brothers, Eugene and his wife, Daina, of Accoville, James and his wife, Joyce, of Indian Creek Road, Pineville, Ronald and his wife, Connie, of Milton and Leslie and his wife, Lynn, of Bruno.

A memorial dinner and service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the home of Troy’s brother, James and Joyce on Indian Creek Road.

Thelma D. ‘Toad’ Cutlip

CRAIGSVILLE — Thelma D. “Toad” Cutlip, 74, of Nicholas County, died Thursday, May 21, 2009.

Dollie Evans

LOGAN — Dollie Evans, 93, of Pine Street, Logan, departed this life on Thursday, May 21, 2009.

Services will be conducted Sunday, May 24, at 1 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan with the Rev. T.J. Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan.

Donald Barry Evans

MOUNT HOPE — Donald Barry Evans, age 70, of Mount Hope, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009.

Born November 23, 1938, at Kermit, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert and Pauline Stepp Evans.

Donald was a private pilot, liked to fly and was an avid gardener. He graduated from Crumb High School in 1956 and attended Business School in Huntington, W.Va. He moved from Huntington to Holland, Mich., where he lived for many years then moved to Miami, Fla., where he owned and operated Don’s Sign Shop.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, Bessie Milam Stepp and Allen “Bo” Stepp of Stepptown, W.Va.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Sharon Levett Evans of Mount Hope; two stepdaughters, Melissa Gelderbloom and Julie Smith and husband Tony, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; special cousins, Bill Mahaffey and wife Sharon of Beckley, Allen Mahaffey and wife Gina of Sand Branch, Barbara Mahaffey White and husband Lanty of Newport News, Va., Elizabeth Sweet and husband George of Apopka, Fla., “Bertie” Bobfield, Donna Blake and husband Charlie, and Polly Valdivar and husband David, all of Miami, Fla.

A Private Memorial Service will be held.

Claude B. Gill

Claude B. Gill, age 81, of Crab Orchard, formerly of Piney View, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1927, at Meadow Bridge, W.Va., and was the son of the late Oscar and Lou Ola Gill, and stepmother, Verly Jeffries Gill.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Gill; three brothers, Clinton, Clayton and Cleo Gill; and a sister, Mildred.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Ester Gill, at home; son, Danny Gill; grandsons, Matthew Gill and his wife, Kim, of Oak Hill, and Danny C. Gill and his wife, Kim, of Crab Orchard; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Samuel, and Sydney Gill of Crab Orchard; and numerous friends including Wayne Jarrett who helped cared for him until his passing.

A celebration of life for Mr. Gill will be 2 p.m. today, Friday, May 22, 2009, at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Roger Tolliver officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service today for visitation.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Bessie Massey Green

ARNETT — Bessie Massey Green passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, in the Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1949, at Arnett, a daughter of the late Roy and Ruby Norma Henderson Massey.

Mrs. Green was an avid doll collector.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Ricky and Icey; and beloved companion, Robert Wagoner.

She is survived by a son, Bucky Dickens and his wife, Sharon, of Glen Daniel; a daughter, Tammy Dameron and her husband, Frank, of Beckley; sisters and brothers, Grant and Wanda Massey of Dameron, Martha and Bill Lucas of Arnett, David and Debbie Massey of Glen Daniel, Ruthy Fleming of Ohio, Mary and Bubby Henderson of Sandlick, Lee Roy and Tresa Massey of Arnett, Bridget and Wayne Daniel of Arnett; two grandchildren, Jackie Toler and Alitisha Dickens; her three beloved dogs: Dusty, BJ and Bitty; and her granddaughter doggie: Candy.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Massey Cemetery at Arnett, with Pastor Greg Lanham officiating. Burial will be in the Massey Cemetery, Arnett.

RICHWOOD — Velma Viola Grose, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

Blaine Verlan ‘Buddy’ Murphy

CLEAR FORK — Blaine Verlan “Buddy” Murphy, 71, of Clear Fork, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Welch Community Hospital, Welch, W.Va., following a long illness.

Blaine was born August 4, 1937, in Ikes Fork, W.Va., a son of the late Blaine Samuel and Florence Amanda Lester Murphy.

He was a former Columbia Gas Operator and was affiliated with the Hanover Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jessica Dawn Stacy.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna Stacy and husband Darrin of Hanover, W.Va., and Tenna Stacy and husband Jeff of Mannington, W.Va.; one brother, Donald Murphy and wife Sylvia of Florida; one sister, Wanda Kennedy and husband Wayne of Columbus, Ohio; three grandsons, Cody Lee Stacy of Hanover, Matthew Brent Stacy, also of Hanover, and Justin Jeffrey Stacy of Charlotte, N.C.; and one granddaughter, Amanda Jo Nez of Mannington, W.Va.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday, May 24, 2009, with Reverend Arnold Harless officiating at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W.Va. Burial will follow in the Paris Lester Cemetery at Ikes Fork, W.Va.

Serving as pallbearers will be Darrin Stacy, Jeff Stacy, Justin Stacy, Cody Stacy, Brent Stacy, Mike Kennedy, and Jeff Kennedy.

Cynthia Lynn Johnson Pennington

COLONIAL BEACH, Va. — Cynthia Lynn Johnson Pennington, 46, of Colonial Beach, Va., formerly of Lynco, W.Va., died of a massive heart attack on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

She was born May 31, 1962, in Chicago, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Tina Marie Johnson; paternal grandparents Gayther and Nora Beatrice Johnson; maternal grandparents Curtis E. and Alta Mae Vint.

Survivors include her loving parents Doug and Brenda Vint Johnson of Lynco, W.Va.; her loving husband, Thomas Pennington; two daughters, Tina Marie Pennington and Hannah Pennington; sons, Thomas Pennington Jr. and Justin Pennington, all of Colonial Beach, Va.; a son, Douglas E. Marks Johnson of Logan, W.Va.; a sister, Lisa Johnson White of Oceana, W.Va.; two stepchildren, Joshua Pennington of Lynco, W.Va., and Chasity Whitson of Bristol, Va.; two nephews, Kurtis E. White and Neal White of Oceana, W.Va.; and a host of other loving family and friends.

At Cindy’s request she will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rosalie Upton Stennett

LEWISBURG — Rosalie Upton Stennett, 88, of Lewisburg, formerly of Greenville, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Greenbrier Manor following a short illness.

She was born at Alderson, W.Va., Dec. 27, 1920, a daughter of the late Frank and Mamie Thomas Upton.

Mrs. Stennett was a homemaker and a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church at Greenville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harold Stennett; and a granddaughter, Allison K. Stennett; six brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith K. Stennett and her husband, Michael Rosolina, of Friars Hill, W.Va., Rhonda K. Pyle and her husband, Jackson, of Decatur, Ala.; a son, Alan K. Stennett and his wife, Linda, of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a granddaughter, Amanda K. Stennett and her husband, Shawn Russell, of Watham, Mass.; and a sister, Elizabeth Propes of Ocean View, Va.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Patty Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Forest Hill.

Albert Gregory Walls

BOZOO — Albert Gregory Walls, age 71, of Bozoo, passed away Friday, May 15, 2009, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Atlanta, Ga., following a long battle with cancer and M.S.

Born October 31, 1937, at the old original Simon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ruble and Marie Justice Walls.

Gregory attended Baileysville High School where he enjoyed playing football. His other hobbies included hunting and fishing. He spent the majority of his adult life with his late wife Marie in Roseville, Mich., where they raised their children and he owned his own businesses. They later bought a farm at Bozoo when he became disabled where he could be close to his sister. For the past two years he has been cared for by his sons Richard and Michael in Atlanta. They would bring him home when he was able to travel.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Belcher Walls; two infant brothers, Archie and Ranney; an infant sister, Helen; and a brother, Ronald Walls.

Survivors include four sons, Albert Gregory Walls Jr. of Arizona, Leland Walls of Michigan, Richard Walls and wife Michelle of Bartons Ridge, W.Va., and Atlanta, Ga., and Michael Walls of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Rosa Kivett of Lindside, W.Va., and Melissa Harmon and husband Mike of Orlando, Fla., a sister Jane Cline and husband Cecil of Bozoo, 11 grandchildren, Becky Marie, Marcy, Amanda, Natalie, Brittney, Sarah, Logan, Samantha, Ashley, Stephanie and Devin, five great-grandchildren, Anna-Belle, Lilly, Mackenzie, Zackery, Melodie and Alexis; and a special daughter-in-law, Gloria.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donald Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Family Cemetery, Johnnycake Mountain, McDowell County, W.Va.
