Rev. Max W. Bays



SETH — Rev. Max W. Bays, 94, died Monday, April 6, 2009.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville. Burial will follow in the Pineview Cemetery, Orgas.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Louise Evelyn Burnside



Louise Evelyn Farley Burnside, age 84, of Rock Creek, went to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Heartland of Beckley.

Born Jan. 24, 1924, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Azel and Essie Williams Farley.

Mrs. Burnside was a 50-plus-year member of the Rebecca Chapel United Methodist Church at Rock Creek.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arley Lewis Burnside; a son, Lloyd C. Burnside; and two brothers-in-law, Mike Rizzuto and Paul Cantley.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Lonnie Burnside and Eddie Burnside, both of Rock Creek; three sisters, Mildred Cantley of Rock Creek, Peggy Rizzuto of Valley City, Ohio, and Patsy Pettry and husband, Eugene, of Henry, Ill.; three brothers, Azel Farley Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Beckley, Teddy J. Farley and wife, Cathy, of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Jim L. Farley and wife, Bobbie, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rebecca Chapel United Methodist Church at Rock Creek.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Rebecca Chapel United Methodist Church, Rock Creek, with the Revs. Mike Kessinger and Donnie Russell officiating. Singer will be Scott Shuster. Burial will follow in the Miller Cemetery at Rock Creek.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Gary W. Crawford



WIKEL — Gary W. Crawford, age 58, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at his home.

Born June 8, 1950, at Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of Russell and Ruth Campbell Crawford of Wikel.

Mr. Crawford attended the Lindside Christian Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Frances G. Mullins Crawford; two daughters, Jennifer R. Woodyard and husband, John, of Dublin, Va., and Jessica E. Hale Crawford of Peterstown, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Samantha and Nathanial Woodyard, Morgan Handy and Katelyn Hale; one sister, Brenda Crawford of Lindside, W.Va.; and a very special nephew Shannon Mullins.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, with Minister Henry Conley officiating. Burial will follow in the Keaton Cemetery, Greenville.

James Mann, Gary Craig, David Christian, Andrew Yarid, Keith Christian, Ken Brolsma, Bobby Shires and Mike Gravely will be serving as pallbearers.

Robert (Bobby) Daniels



Robert Ernest (Bobby) Daniels, 57, of Fayetteville, Ga., formerly of Hull St., Beckley, passed away Sunday in Fayetteville. He was the husband of Patty Beard Daniels, and father of the late Lisa Daniels and Emily. He was the son of the late Robert and Jo Lee Quesenberry Daniels and brother to Doug Daniels.

William Timothy ‘Timmy’ Fox



William Timothy “Timmy” Fox, age 13, of Daniels, went to be the Lord on April 7, 2009, with his family by his side.

Timmy was born on Aug. 20, 1995, in High Point, N.C., and was the son of Lisa Frazier Fox and William “Billy” Fox. Timmy was diagnosed with Adrenoluekodystrophy in July 2008.

Timmy fought a strong battle and through it all, he had so much faith and love for Jesus Christ, his Savior. Timmy always wanted to be a fisherman for God and he did a great job of it while touching many lives in the process. Timmy was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Princeton, W.Va., where he came to know the Lord in the early spring of 2008. Timmy attended Shady Spring Middle School and was a homebound student of Elizabeth Ellison, an angel sent from above, whom he loved very much.

Timmy is survived by his mother, Lisa Fox of the home, his father, William “Billy” Fox and wife, Lisa Sue, of Camp Creek, W.Va.; brother, Brandon Thomas Fox at home; four sisters, Sarah Michelle Fox, Carrie Leanne Fox, Kristi Marie Fox, all at home, and Destiny Lakin “Button” Fox of Camp Creek; two step sisters, Rikki Rachele Matthews of Camp Creek and Clarissa Elizabeth Perkins of Washington; maternal grandmother, Nancy Harrelson of Randleman, N.C.; paternal grandmother, Mary Alice Spivey of Silver Valley, N.C.; paternal grandfather, William “Bill” Fox Sr. of Thomasville, N.C.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who loved Timmy dearly also survive.

The family gives special thanks to the Hospice Staff, Della, Tracey, Sonya; his therapist, Theresa; and all of his church family who constantly prayed for him.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with Pastor Lyle Mullins officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Shumate, Scott Mullins, Pat Gallipon, Austin Frazier, Matthew Lester and Doug Weidensall.

OAK HILL — Rena Kay Gill, 55, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at her residence.

Born Oct. 24, 1953, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Summers Jerome Jarrell and Vida Lucille Jarrell.

Mrs. Gill was a homemaker and attended the Boley Street Church of God in Oak Hill.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Larry Gill; three sons, Larry Dale Gill Jr. and his wife, Ginny, of Harvey, Steve Gill and his wife, Lori, of Hilltop and Jason Gill and his wife, Misty, of Minden; two daughters, Rhonda Dettrey and her husband, Micheal, of Thurmond and Sylvia Gill of Rainelle; a brother, Larry Jarrell and his wife, Margaret, of Minden; 14 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Robert Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

BUCKEYE — Ida Edith Hannah, 94, died April 6, 2009.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton.

Harry Allen Hollins Jr.



Harry Allen Hollins Jr., age 74, of Beckley, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley.

Born Aug. 13, 1934, in Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Harry Allen Sr. and Hazel Etta Kirk Hollins.

Mr. Hollins enjoyed doing yard work. He was an Insurance Agent for Monumental Life Insurance Company; Specialized Foster Parent for Pressley Ridge for the last 19 years and was a foster parent to over 200 children during that time. He was a member of the North Gate Baptist Church in Beckley. He was in the U. S. Navy, serving three Tours of Duty with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. He was also stationed on the U.S. Navy Tanker, USS Canisteo.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Hazelwood.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Peggy Shrewsbury Hollins of Beckley; one son, Kevin Allen Hollins of Broad Run, Va.; one grandson, Kurtis Allen Hollins also of Broad Run; one granddaughter, Kacey Amanda Hollins of Pinnacle, N.C.; one sister, Margaret Mills and husband, Wallace, of Mullens; several nieces and nephews; and extended family members, Mary, Ronnie, Dale and Aaron.

Service will be 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Craig Stevens officiating.

Friends may gather with the family 6 p.m. until the time of the service Friday, April 10, 2009, at the funeral home.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff on 4-B at the Veterans Hospital.

Alice Hubbard Pannell



Alice Hubbard Pannell, 99, of Beckley, passed away peacefully in her sleep at a North Carolina hospital following a brief illness.

She was born on July 8, 1909, in Raleigh County, to Will Hubbard and Daisy Miles Hubbard.

Mrs. Pannell was a graduate of Bluefield State College and was a school teacher for 40 years in Raleigh County.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Dorcas Missionary Society, former member of the Golden Ages and the West Virginia Retired Teachers Association.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Jarius Pannell; a son, Lemuel Pannell Jr.; two sisters, Daisy Hall and Laura Hubbard; and six brothers, Charlie Hubbard, Miles Hubbard, Thomas Hubbard, Napoleon Hubbard, Andre Hubbard and Will Hubbard.

She is survived by a daughter, Gwendolyn Pannell (Wiseman) Johnson of North Carolina; a son, Donnell Pannell (Cynthia), (Linda) of New Jersey; a stepdaughter, Juanita P. Kent; a stepson, Richard Pannell; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Central Baptist Church on Brooks and G Street, Beckley, with the Rev. Thomas Moore officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Charles Wayne Rhodes



ALDERSON — Charles Wayne Rhodes, age 52, of Alderson, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., following a short illness.

Born June 12, 1956, at Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Oscar and Nelle Gertrude Kincaid Rhodes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.

Mr. Rhodes was a retired truck driver, retiring from the West Virginia Department of Highways, Lewisburg, after 24 years of service. He was also a farmer. He was a 1974 graduate of Greenbrier West High School at Charmco and a member of the McElhenney Presbyterian Church at Grassy Meadows.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Dinah Lynn Bush Rhodes of Alderson; an aunt, Velvia A. Kincaid of Alderson; and several cousins.

Graveside service and burial will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, W.Va., with the Rev. Frank Jones officiating. Friends may call noon to 1:15 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are welcome to meet at the funeral home by 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Serving as pallbearers will be Josh Bennett, Brent Romanello, Anthony Romanello, Charlie Hendrix, Roger Lee Wills, Mike Shortridge, Fonzie Fitzwater and Larry Gabbert.

Grace E. Smith, age 89, of Beckley, formerly of Mullens, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2009.

Jimmy Ray Smith



On Wednesday, April 8, 2009, our beloved Jimmy Ray Smith passed away peacefully, but very unexpectedly, at his home here in Beckley. He was 64 years of age.

Born James Raymond Smith on June 13, 1944, in Beckley, he was the only child of James and Betty Jo Carr Smith.

Jimmy Ray, as he was affectionately known all his life, was a lifelong resident of Beckley. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1962, he attended Beckley College (MSU) and East Tennessee State. A well known car salesman in the Beckley area, he began his career with Grady Whitlock Ford and was presently affiliated with Lewis Automotive. He had over 30 years in the car sales industry. Jimmy Ray was a member of the United Methodist Temple and the Elks club. He was an avid golfer and liked to hunt.

This past weekend, Jimmy Ray was with his son, Evan, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Autumn, and his son’s mother, “Tikki,” in anticipation of their upcoming wedding. Although they are very shocked and saddened of his untimely passing, they are very thankful to God for this past weekend.

Jimmy Ray is the dear father of Evan A. Smith and his fiancé, Autumn, and the former husband and good friend of Patricia “Tikki” Smith, all of Charleston. He is also survived by his former in-laws whom he held in high regard, Helen Janney and OD Janney. Many friends also survive.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Temple, 201 Templeview Drive, with the Rev. Chuck Pullins officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. The family will receive friends 1:30 p.m. until the hour of the service at the church.

Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
