Bernie Basham




Bernie Basham, 72, of Mabscott, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a sudden illness.

Born in Beckley on Nov. 19, 1935, he was the son of the late James Basham and Nora Farley Basham.

Mr. Basham was a retired employee of Raleigh County Memorial Airport. He was presently employed by Beckley Auto Mall and Avis Car Rental.

Mr. Basham was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Don and Paul Basham.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Mary Bryant Basham; a son, Tony Basham and wife, Karen, of Mabscott; two grandsons, Tony Basham Jr. and Tim Basham, both of Mabscott; a brother, Fred Basham of Beckley; and a sister, Ruth Amlotte of Clearwater, Fla.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Paul Blizard and Tony Basham Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Houck, Luke Houck, Jason Kerr, John Riffe, Greg Wilburn and Ray Palmer.

Dolsie Mabel Corley




GLENDON — Dolsie Mabel Corley, 98, of Glendon, Braxton County, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the home of her son in Orlando, Fla., where she had made her home for the past two years.

She was a homemaker and the widow of Dana Corley, who passed away April 29, 2003.

Dolsie was born in BraxtonCounty on March 19, 1910, the daughter of the late Melvin and Blanch Young Ramsey.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dana Ramsey and Garland Ramsey; and a sister, Edna Susan Hall.

She was a member of Elk River Baptist Church and a member of Gassaway Eastern Star Chapter 32.

Survivors include her son, Harry L. and wife, Jerrie Corley, of Orlando; daughter, Margaret McLaughlin and husband, Larry, of Beckley; granddaughter, Dana Lynn Young and husband, Tim, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Carissa and Carter Young of Jacksonville; and a dear niece, Sandra Kay Smith of Parkersburg.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Pastor Darrell Mollohan officiating.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Eastern Star service will be held in the chapel at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Shirley A. Evans




PINEVILLE — Shirley A. Evans, 68, of Pineville, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008, at her residence.

Born June 29, 1939, at Keyrock, she was the daughter of Peachie Henson and the late Dewey Privett.

Shirley was a member of Coon Fork Baptist Church most of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family, children and especially her grandchildren. Many came to know her as Nanny because her door was always open to those in need of guidance, love or shelter.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Evans; and two brothers, Darrell and Dennis “Dickie” Privett.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her mother, Peachie Henson of Keyrock; three daughters, Rachel Cisco and her fiancé, Johnny Darby, of Kentucky, Carolyn Evans and her fiancé, Jay Stafford, of Pineville and Katherine Evans and her fiancé, Melvin Hall, of Welch-Pineville Road; an adopted daughter, Jennifer Clay of West Virginia; and four grandchildren, Misty Cook and her husband, Jake, of Pineville, Nikki Hall of Welch-Pineville Road, Shane Cisco and his fiancé, Bambi Benifield, and Joshua Clay of Pineville. She also had a special granddaughter she liked to call her own, Brandy Cline of Pineville; three great-granddaughters, Trinity Cook and Cheyanne Graybeal of Pineville, and Lana Thacker of Williamson; two brothers, Robert Privett and his wife, Laura, of Keyrock and James Privett and his wife, Linda, of Sabine; a sister, Wilma McCoy and her husband, John, of Keyrock; and several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Bill Goode officiating. Burial will follow in Privett Family Cemetery, Keyrock.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all those who took care of Shirley throughout her illness: Judy Lambert, Lynn Adkins, Darlene Hurley, Hospice of Southern West Virginia and her chaplain Mr. Bloom, Elaine Adkins and Angie Carter. Thank you also to those who came to visit and pray with her at home, it meant a lot to her.

HINTON — Margaret J. Gill, 70, of Madams Creek, Hinton, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at her home following a sudden illness.

Born Aug. 10, 1937, at Artie, she was the daughter of the late Ervin P. and Helen P. Sprouse Knapp.

Margaret was a former cook for the Summers County Council on Aging. She was a member of Bellepoint Baptist Church in Hinton.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Ratliff; a brother, Gene Knapp; and a sister, Delorine Hitchens.

Survivors include a son, Donald Thompson and wife, Bernice, of Taylorsville, N.C.; two daughters, Melissa Dotson and husband, Ray, of Hinton and Tracie Cales and husband, Butch, of Meadow Creek; special friend, Tom Chewning of Madams Creek; a brother, Lloyd “Tucker” Knapp of Oak Hill; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor David Board officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Friends may call noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

RICHWOOD — Virginia Ruth Kopfle, 83, of Richwood, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Richwood Area Community Hospital (nursing home).

She was born Nov. 18, 1924, in Richwood.

She was a member of Little Laurel Baptist Church, Richwood.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellen and husband, Brian Harvey, of Bethesda, Md., and two grandsons, Alex and Andrew Harvey.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Rev. Larry Russell officiating. Interment will follow in Richwood Cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Calvin F. Martin




STATESVILLE, N.C. — Calvin F. Martin, 82, of Statesville, formerly of Beckley, was called to his eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior following a lengthy battle of cancer.

Calvin was born June 15, 1925, at St. Albans. He was the son of the late Wayland Harbor Martin and Carrie Emma Barnette Martin.

Upon graduating from St. Albans High School in 1943, Calvin served in the 8th Army Air Corps in England during World War II. After returning home from service in 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, the late Betty Jane Good.

Calvin was a 40-year member and deacon of First Baptist Church of St. Albans. He retired in 1986 from C&P; Telephone Co. of West Virginia.

Calvin was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Alice Buetow of Winchester, Va., and Verna Mae Jacobs of St. Albans; and two brothers, William H. Martin of Denver, Colo., and Giles Newman Martin of St. Albans.

He is survived by three children, Mark S. (Drema) Martin of Beckley, Michael B. (Tresa) Martin of Matthews, N.C., and Melinda M. (James) Blevins of Statesville; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Graveside funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans. The service will be officiated by Calvin’s grandson, the Rev. Brandon Blevins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requesst donations be made to Hospice of your choice.

Linda ‘Charlotte’ Richmond




Linda “Charlotte” Richmond, 58, of Piney View, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her home.

Born April 22, 1950, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Helen Garten Buckland.

Charlotte was a graduate of Beckley College. She was a supervisor with the adoptions unit with the Department of Health and Human Resources. She worked in social services for the past 25 years and brightened numerous families with her dedication and determination to help the children she worked with find loving and caring homes.

Charlotte was a faithful member of Piney View Bible Church for the past 35 years. Charlotte loved to help prepare the meals at the church. She loved to read and crochet and spend time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her younger brother, John Buckland, in 2004.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 39 years, James Richmond; her two daughters, Conni Lynn Mitchell and her husband, Michael, of Floyd, Va., and Sara Laura Estepp and husband, Robert, of Beckley; a brother, Troy Buckland and wife, Dreama, of Beckley; three sisters, Reba Elmore and her husband, Stephen, of Nokesville, Va., Trish Kerbawy and her husband, Randy, of Beckley and Rebecca Cook of Beckley; three grandchildren, Hannah and James Mitchell and Adyson Estepp; 10 nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

OAK HILL — Ruth M. Thompson Rilat, 86, of Oak Hill, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Hilltop Center.

Born Dec. 11, 1921, at Minden, she was the daughter of the late Edmond and Hattie Treadway Thompson.

She was a retired machine operator for RA-JA Manufacturing at Lochgelly.

Mrs. Rilat was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church, Phoenix, Ariz.

Her husband, Theodore Rilat, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four brothers, William Thompson of Route 1, Fayetteville, Franklin Thompson of Elyria, Ohio, Robert Thompson of Oak Hill and Danny Thompson of Wadsworth, Ohio; and two sisters, Frances Brozik of Rockford, Ill., and Dorothy Griepke of Largo, Fla.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Daniel Webster Thompson




JUMPING BRANCH — Daniel Webster Thompson, 89, of Jumping Branch, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Summers County Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Nov. 4, 1918, at Jumping Branch, he was the son of the late William Franklin and Alberta Biola Plumley Thompson.

Dan was a decorated veteran of the United States Army who served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked as an auto body and radiator technician for many years at Garten Motors in Hinton and later at Grady Whitlock Ford, retiring in 1981 after 24 years of service. A member of Advent Christian Church in Beckley, he later attended Little Log Church at Pluto and Grace Baptist Church at Nimitz. He loved to study the Bible, play piano, garden, bee hunt and care for his apiary of honey bees.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Ila Mae Harvey Thompson; four brothers, Delford, Russell, Woodrow and Florie; two sisters, Pauline and Bly; two half brothers, Archie and Nelson; two half sisters, Ethel and Lotus; and his beloved dog, Hunter.

Survivors include two sons, Eddie Thompson of Staunton, Va., and Danny Thompson and wife, Drema, of Graham, N.C.; four daughters, Evelyn Stone and husband, Jerry, of Christiansburg, Va., Carolyn Cartwright and husband, Tom, of Austin, Texas, Betty Saunders and husband, Steve, of Cupertino, Calif., and Cathy Willey and husband, Joe, of Nimitz; 11 grandchildren, Sherry, Sandy, Kelli, Kara, Nathan, Sean, Sam, Lance, Desirae, Paige and Todd; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, David Thompson of Orlando, Fla.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Jimmy Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

OAK HILL — Sylvia L. Underwood, 93, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Berger Health System in Circleville, Ohio. Due to ill health, Sylvia had resided in Circleville for the past seven years in order to be near her daughters.

Born April 3, 1915, at Goshen, Va., she was the daughter of the late Aronie Allen and Carrie Jo Plogger Elswick.

Mrs. Underwood was a member of First Baptist Church, Pocahontas, Va., and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Speed Underwood, preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1985. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Bobby Underwood, Speed Underwood Jr., and Jackie Underwood; two daughters, Alice Collins and Hallie Underwood; and a brother.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally Lively of Circleville and Nila Sheets of Circleville; a son, Dwight Underwood of Roanoke, Va.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Allen Gallimore officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
