Floyd Franklin Bennett



PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Floyd Franklin Bennett, 80, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Norfolk, Va.

Born in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Dock Houston and Glenna Jane Nicely Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a former co-owner and pharmacist of Joseph P. Hall Drugstore in Suffolk, Va. He was a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include a niece, Barbara Gibb, and a nephew, Charles Bennett, both of Colorado; two great-nieces and three great-nephews.

Graveside service and burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville, with Pastor Stanley Clark officiating.

PRINCETON — Sandra Jane Eagle, 50, of Princeton, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Princeton Community Hospital following a short illness.

Born Feb. 15, 1958, on Big Sewell Mountain, Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. Crookshanks and Lila Elizabeth Mills Crookshanks of Rainelle.

Mrs. Eagle was a homemaker and a member of Big Sewell Baptist Church in Rainelle.

In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Delbert Calvin Eagle Sr.; a son, D. Calvin Eagle Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Princeton; a daughter, Tabitha Carreon and husband, Charles, of Bradley; two sisters, Vickie D. and Elizabeth “Libbie” A. Crookshanks, both of Rainelle; and two grandchildren, Bryanna and Marcanthony Carreon, both of Bradley.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Kermit Hunter and the Rev. Tom Vance officiating. Burial will follow in Sims Cemetery, Loops Road, Rainelle.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to assist with the funeral cost.

CRAIGSVILLE — Thomas “Larry” Elliott, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 20, 2008.

Donald Wayne ‘Chipper’ Ellison



OAK HILL — Donald Wayne “Chipper” Ellison, 47, of Oak Hill, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington following a short illness.

Born Jan. 4, 1961, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Lloyd Franklin Ellison and Mary Frances Bell Ellison.

“Chipper” was a former auto repairman. He loved gardening and animals.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd Franklin “Buster” Ellison Jr. and Gary Ray Ellison.

Survivors include his fiancée, Dawn Williams; two sons, Donnie of Oak Hill and Lloyd “Rappie” of Scarbro; sisters, Mary Ann Harrah and husband, Larry, of Columbus, Ohio, and Donna Elaine Dorado and husband, Bob, of Mount Hope; brothers, Charles Ellison and wife, Merinda, of Mooresville, N.C., and Larry “Dino” Ellison of Hilltop.

Service will be noon Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Elizabeth Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Thelma Anna Green



CANDOR, N.C. — Thelma Anna Green, 91, of Candor, formerly of Daniels, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in a Biscoe, N.C., nursing home following a long illness.

Born March 5, 1917, at Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Allen Yates and Ruby Clemons Yates.

She was a homemaker and was a former member of the Daniels Wesleyan Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Green; a brother; six sisters; and a granddaughter, Vickie Lynn Green.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas R. Green of Candor and John A. Green and wife, Minnie Mae, of Beckley; a grandson, Billy Green of North Carolina; and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Luke Richmond officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Olemphia Lee Jackson



Olemphia Lee Jackson, 80, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, among her family in Orlando, Fla., following a short illness.

Born Oct. 11, 1927, in East Beckley to the late Boulden and Vicie Hayden Jackson, Olemphia was the fourth of five children.

A graduate of Stratton High School in Beckley, she graduated from cosmetology school in Columbus, Ohio. She was affectionately called “Lemp.” During her adult years she was an active member of Second Baptist Church, serving on the Usher Board and other offices.

One of Lemp’s greatest joys was being a mother to William Forest “Billy” Jackson, who tragically died in his 30s. Despite this loss, she embraced his children, Darnell and Darrell, later adopting them. Darnell and Darrell remained by their mother’s side until her passing Sunday.

Lemp dearly loved her brothers, Fred, Lamar and Robert, and her sister, Barbara.

Lemp lived for a time in Youngstown, Ohio, where she was married to the late Clarence Bryant. She retired to Florida, living the remainder of her years.

Olemphia leaves to cherish her memory two grandsons (legally adopted sons), Donald Darnell Jackson and William Darrell Jackson; her adopted family, Michael and Nicole “Nicki” Thomas, and grandson, Michael Levon; four sisters-in-law; seven great-grandchildren, Britani Danelle, Derek Carson, Brandon Morale, Maxmara Lockley, Darnell Lamar, Daniya Jackson and Darrelle Brisei Campbell-Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Temple, Beckley. Service will be 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Walter M. Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Professional services have been entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

James F. Massey



James Finley Massey of Miller Street, Beckley, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House. He was 91 years of age.

Billie Skaggs



OAK HILL — A great loss to this world and a wonderful addition to the next, Billie Skaggs was a beloved mother to all who knew her, the rock upon which many storms were weathered and counselor to all who needed guidance.

Billie Kaye Gilbert Skaggs, 65, of Oak Hill, departed this life Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at her home following a long illness.

Born Sept. 7, 1942, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Dorothy Mae Gilbert Payne and Roy Houston Payne Sr.

She was the retired owner for B&B; Ambulance Co.

Mrs. Skaggs was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Hill. She was a member of the last graduating class of Kingston High School, Class of 1959.

Survivors include her true love, Robert Alden Skaggs Sr., formerly of Rick Creek; four sons, Gary Payne of Virginia, David Skaggs of Oak Hill, Alan Skaggs of Oak Hill and Robert Skaggs Jr. of North Carolina; five daughters, Michelle Miller of Oak Hill, Angel Skaggs of Fayetteville, Melissa Malay of Page, Amanda Richardson of Ansted and Bobbi Skaggs of Oak Hill; a half brother, Roy Payne of Oak Hill; three half sisters, Karen Elder of Oak Hill, Elsie Payne of Hilltop and Robin Coleman of Hilltop; and eight grandchildren, Catherine Skaggs, Daniel Miller, Zachary Skaggs, Savannah Skaggs, Amanda Lynn Skaggs, Cameron Skidmore, Noe Skidmore-Skaggs and Davallen Skidmore.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Calvary Baptist Church, Oak Hill. There will be no visitation.

FAYETTEVILLE — Patricia “Patti” Taylor, 58, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division.

Born May 16, 1949, at Robson, she was the daughter of the late George K. Taylor and Eula M. Dial Taylor.

She was retired.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charlie Taylor.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Maynor and her husband, Evan; two sons, Carlos Adkins Jr. and his wife, Heather, and Michael Adkins and his wife, Lora; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a beloved dog, Hershey; five sisters, Barbara McKinney, Shelba Phillips, Sue McFadin, Sandra Schumtte and Linda Saunders; and three brothers, Roger Taylor, George Taylor Jr. and Roy Taylor.

Service will be noon Saturday, March 22, at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Rick Barker officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Augusta N. (Trout) Wells



RICHWOOD — Mrs. Augusta N. (Trout) Wells, 86, of Richwood, formerly of Carl, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Richwood Area Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born Oct. 7, 1921, at Carl, she was the daughter of the late Newman and Alice Sebert Trout.

A former cook for the Nicholas County Board of Education, she was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church of Carl.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lovell Arlie Wells, on April 11, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a son, Clifton Wells, and two brothers, Blaine and Basil Trout.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn D. Lilly and husband, Norvell, of Richwood and Linda L. Amick of Painesville, Ohio; a son, Russell Wells of Carl; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with Pastor Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the mausoleum chapel.

Donzie Boyd White



ELGOOD — Donzie Boyd White, 89, of Elgood, died Tuesday morning, March 18, 2008, at his home.

Born April 7, 1918, at Elgood, he was one of 14 children of the late Samuel Patton and Ollie Steele White.

Donzie was a proud veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the 1st Armored Division, 6th Armored Infantry Regimen with the U.S. Army. During the war, he was wounded at Angio, near Cecina, Italy, on Jan. 9, 1944. Donzie was awarded the Purple Heart. He received the European African Middle Medal, the Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a life-long member of Elgood Church, having served in many capacities in the life of the church. Donzie retired in 1980 from Celanese Corp. in Narrows, Va., after many years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Aubrey, Allen, Fred, Blake and Lake White; seven sisters, Maude Shumate, Lottie White, Elsie Shumate, Christie Kennedy, Rhoda Holdren, Chippie Ferguson and Louise Harris; and a grandson, David Holladay.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Hill White; three daughters, Bonnie Hopkins and husband, Eddie, of Elgood, Betty Keaton and husband, Steve, of Lerona and Susan Holladay and husband, Dr. David Holladay, of Loudon, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Eric Hopkins and wife, Angie, of Princeton, Dr. Jill Hopkins of Daniels, Scott Keaton and wife, Penny, of Pembroke, Va., Drs. Lori Keaton Hansen and husband, Chris, of Pembroke, Va., Jessica and Seth Holladay of Loudon, Tenn., and Melissa Holladay Kisicki and husband, Tom, of Maryville, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren: Zachary and Matthew Keaton, Haley, Keaton and Cameron Hansen, Drew, Beth and Parker Hopkins; a sister, Polly Wheeler of Powhatan, Va.; and a nephew (raised as a brother), Arthur Shumate and wife, Geneva, of Weirton.

Also left to cherish his memory are many nieces and nephews, as well as caregivers, Tammy Fulknier, Mahala Accettullo and Carol Cowger; and special friends, Janie Nash and Joyce Meadows.

Today, we will celebrate the life of Donzie White at 3 p.m. at Elgood Church with Pastors Jim Stanley and Tim Sanderson officiating. Burial will follow in Elgood Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by the West Virginia Honor Guards and the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Friends visited with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, and may call one hour before service today at the church.

Margaret Kathryn Jones Wood



OAK HILL — Margaret Kathryn Jones Wood, 83, of Oak Hill, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born Nov. 29, 1924, at Calloway, Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Claudius Hart Jones Sr. and Eva Hoke Jones.

She was a retired nursing assistant for Plateau Medical Center.

Margaret was a member of Mount Hope Christian Church.

Three brothers, Claudius H. Jones Jr., Lyle Jones and Charles Jones, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons, Bobby Midrowsky and wife, Kathy, of Tampa, Fla., Randy Midrowsky and wife, Linda, of Germany, David Jones of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Marshall Midrowsky and wife, Somkuan, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Rodney Jones and wife, Vicky, of Oak Hill, Carlos Jones and wife, Ethel, of Oak Hill and Bernard Jones and wife, Mary Ann, of Liberty, N.Y.; two sisters, Joyce Robinson of Midwest City, Okla., and Kathy Medina of League City, Texas; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside rites and committal service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Burial will follow.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, for the health of our children.
