Edith E. Snyder Bailey



Edith E. Snyder Bailey, of 2117 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at the Greystone Retirement Village following a long illness.

She was born at Quinnimont and was the daughter of the late William E. Snyder and Belle Hawley Snyder.

Mrs. Bailey was a retired clerk at the East Beckley Post Office with 33 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine for over 50 years. She also was a member of the United Postal Workers of America and St. Mary’s United Methodist Church in Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Price M. Bailey; brothers, Walter, Roy, Fred and Bill Snyder; and sisters, Janet Snyder Radford and Elizabeth Snyder Setliff.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews and numerous other family members who will cherish her memory.

Service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Ken Krimmel and the Rev. Steve Rector officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff at Greystone, Dr. Poling, Hospice of Southern WV and Edie’s very attentive and loving caregivers.

James Clarkson Bowes



LEWISBURG — James Clarkson Bowes, 82, of Muddy Creek Mountain, Lewisburg, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, of a sudden illness at the home of his stepson, Joe Huffman in Lewisburg.

Born Aug. 25, 1925, he was the son of the late James E. and Alva Hughes Bowes of Monroe County.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Local 453 of Beckley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth “Sue” Huffman Bowes; a grandson, Anthony E. Bowes; daughter-in-law, Stella Huffman; and a sister-in-law, Frances Fraley.

Survivors include sons, William “Bill” Bowes and wife, Verna, of Crawley, Dwight “Ike” Bowes and wife, Pam, of Rupert and Alan Bowes and wife, Wilma, of Muddy Creek Mountain, Lewisburg; daughters, Dolores Sanford and husband, Rickey, of Frankford and Nina Bowes of Lewisburg; stepson, Joe Huffman and wife, Joan, of Lewisburg; stepdaughter, Anna Bratton and husband, Howard, of Crows, Va.; grandchildren, Leah Bowes, J.J. Bowes, Timothy Bowes, Allyson Ghearing, Keith Bowes, Kevin Bowes, Heather Sanford, Bruce Sanford, Sarah Payne, Michael Bowes, Kayla Bowes, Billy Bratton and Rhonda Webb; and great-grandchildren, Drew Bowes, Zephram Ghearing, Kepler Ghearing, Chase Bratton and Dylan Webb.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating.

Family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Lewis Eugene ‘Gene’ Campbell



BOZOO — Lewis Eugene “Gene” Campbell, 83, of Bozoo, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem, Va.

Born Aug. 31, 1924, he was the son of the late Charlie and Mamie Goodall Campbell.

Mr. Campbell was a lifelong member of Bozoo Christian Church, was a graduate of Peterstown High School, was co-owner with his wife Gretis for 51 years of Bozoo Merchantile Co., served as postmaster at Bozoo for 45 years, served as a director for over 50 years at First National Bank of Peterstown, was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a charter member of the Bozoo Ruritan Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gretis Echols Campbell, and a dear sister, Anna Lee Campbell Shumate.

Survivors include a son, Lewis Eugene Campbell Jr. and wife, Sue, of Richmond, Va.; three granddaughters, Andrea Hubbard and husband, Daniel, of Baltimore, Md., Cara Campbell of Williamsburg, Va., and MacKenzie Campbell of Richmond; four nephews, Larry, Bobby, Darrell Echols and George Ronald Shumate; and a niece, Darlene Cathcart.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Chapel, Peterstown, with Minister Dewey Conley and Barry Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Peterstown Cemetery.

Betty Jean Reynolds Clark, 69, of Daniels, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007.

Born March 16, 1938, at Morgantown, she was the daughter of George and Mildred Mae Little Reynolds.

Betty was a loving homemaker and caretaker for her husband, Bill, and her mother, Mildred. She was a longtime 4-H leader and a devoted attendee to the State Fair. She loved her family and was dedicated to her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was having them around her during the holidays.

Betty was preceded in death by her father, George Reynolds, and sister, Marilyn Reynolds.

She is sadly missed by her husband of 50 years, William G. Clark; her mother, Mildred Reynolds of Daniels; a brother, James P. Reynolds of North Carolina; four daughters and sons-in-law, Terri Stover and husband, Gary, of Daniels, Becky Hite and husband, Randy, of Kingsport, Tenn., Debbie Paris and husband, Bob, of Abingdon, Va., and Billie Enciu and husband, Mircea, of Lexington, Ky.; her grandchildren and spouses, Kara Wilson and husband, Johnny, of San Antonio, Texas, Ryan Stover and wife, Jennifer, of Gainesville, Va., Caitlin Stover of Daniels, Rachael and Randi Hite of Kingsport, Hunter and Chase Enciu of Lexington, and Alexandra, Abigail, Matthew and William Paris of Abingdon; and two great-grandchildren, Wesley and Andrew Wilson of San Antonio.

Service in remembrance of Betty will be today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Friends are welcome from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home with burial following at the Little family cemetery, Stover, with Pastor Ken Killen officiating.

Joyce Dawson 68, of Beckley, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.

Born June 9, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Hettie Meadows.

Joyce was a homemaker and enjoyed reading Christian fiction books and baking. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Russell Dawson; sons, David M. Dawson of Hillsdale, Mich., and James L. Dawson and wife, Beth, of Monroe, N.C.; grandchildren, Micah J. Dawson and Joshua R. Dawson of Monroe; and sister, Nina Van Luven of Rochester, N.Y.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan, 5, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Richard Wagoner officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Robert Otho Dempsey



ANSTED — Robert Otho Dempsey, 91, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his residence following a long illness.

Mr. Dempsey was born March 19, 1916, at Ansted, a son of the late Roy Houston and Nocha Rona Dempsey.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Claudis Cathleen Dempsey; four brothers and a sister, Ralph, Raleigh Raymond, Roscoe and Verda McGraw.

He was a charter member of Evergreen Baptist Church, Romont, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. A member of Ansted Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, he was a coal miner for 37 years, retired from Hawks Nest Mining Co., a member of UMWA and a timberman for Webster Hardwood.

He is survived by his children and their husbands, Rona Ethel and Thomas Fields I of Daniels, Reva Macil and James Lively of Powhatan, Va., Ruth Arbutus and Butch Skaggs of Ansted, and Pamela Louise and Randy Miles of Midlothian, Va.; 12 grandchildren, Thomas Lee Fields II of Midlothian, Deborah Gale Cantley of Cool Ridge, Juanieta Catherine Richmond of Beaver, Sherill Lane Hanshew of Cumberland, Va., Wanda Marie Tabor of Cumberland, Robert Vernon Hanshew of Powhatan, Ruth Ann Church of Newport, Mich., Gregory Paul Skaggs of Ansted, Robert Douglas Skaggs of Lincoln Park, Mich., Cathy Lyn Demitroff of Brownstown, Mich., Michelle Miles Hammer of Midlothian and Randall Lynn “R.J.” Miles Jr. of Richmond, Va.; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Rufus Jackson Dempsey; many loving nieces and nephews of the Dempsey family and many loving members of the Sorrell family.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ansted Baptist Church with the Rev. Garry Sorrell Jr. and Thomas Lee Fields II officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Aaron H. ‘Joe’ Goins Sr.



HINTON — Aaron H. “Joe” Goins Sr., 85, of Hinton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 30, 1922 at Quinnimont, he was the son of the late Lonnie F. and Emma McKinster Goins.

Aaron was a member of Riverview Chapel in Hinton, and was a veteran of the United States Army, 85th Recon Division, who served his country in Africa and Europe during World War II. A member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge No. 62 A.F. & A.M., he retired in 1982 from the Chessie System railroad as supervisor of signals, Hinton Division, with 36 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Aaron dedicated his life to his family who he dearly loved.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline “Polly” Goins, in 2001; two brothers, Arnold Goins and Amos Goins; and two sisters, Juanita Porter and Emma Jean Goins.

Mr. Goins is survived by two sons, Aaron H. “Joe” Goins, Jr. and wife, Sandra, and Lin F. Goins and wife, Susan, all of Hinton; five daughters, Sandra K. Honaker and husband, Butch, Linda Speiden and husband, Don, and Mary Beth Merritt and husband, Robbie, all of Hinton, Becky Browder and husband, Jim, of Simpsonville, S.C., and Deborah S. Dorothy Marie Hankins



Dorothy Marie Hankins, 79, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital surrounded by her family after a long illness.

Mrs. Hankins was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Pocahontas, Va.

She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Mrs. Hankins was the daughter of the late John William and Lucille Yearout Bradford.

Mrs. Hankins was preceded in death by her late husband, Roy Hankins; four brothers, Allen, Orville, Harold and Richard “Jack”; three sisters, Clarice Lilly, Sharon Bradford and Shirley Baier; and her son-in-law, Aubrey “Thomas” Hatcher.

Those left to cherish her memory include a sister, Louise Meadows of Grandview; three daughters, Drema Burns and her husband, Robert “Bob,” of Daniels, Debra Hatcher of Beckley and Patsy Sams and her husband, Johnny, of Daniels; a granddaughter, Angela Gibson and her husband, Bobby, of Columbus, Ohio; a great-grandson, Blake Thomas Gibson of Columbus; many nieces and nephews; and three very loving and caring caregivers. A special thank you to the staff at Raleigh General Hospital (4-North) for the care they gave to Dorothy.

Sandra Sue ‘Wanda’ Hicks



LAYLAND — Surrounded by her loving family, Sandra Sue “Wanda” Hicks, 62, of Layland, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Piney View.

Born March 31, 1945, in Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Nelcie Faye Richmond Bragg and Arnold Tuck Bragg.

Wanda was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her garden, canning and making candy, but most of all she dedicated her life to serving the Lord.

She was of the Pentacostal faith and had served as pastor of Danese Original Holiness Church for 19 years.

Her first husband, Charles Adkins, two brothers, Paul Bragg and Kermit Bragg, and a niece, Rebecca Faith Dunlap, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband, Ray J. Hicks; a son, Gary Bragg and wife, Narcia, of Layland; two daughters, Dena Gemmell and husband, Charles, of Bristol, Va., and Melissa Claypool and husband, Paul, of Piney View; a stepson, Mike Hicks and wife, Sherry, of Perry, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Becky Davis and husband, Bobby, of Charmco; four sisters, Juanita Fox and companion, (Sarge) Jim Wheeler, of Daniels, Jean McCormick and husband, Charles, of North Carolina, Darlene Allen and husband, C.R., of Shady Spring and Sharon Diehl and husband, Alex, of Lanark; three brothers, Owen Bragg and wife, Dixie, of Lanark, Glen Lee Bragg and wife, Debbie, of Hendersonville, Tenn., and the Rev. She is also survived by four grandchildren, David Gardner and comapnion, Loan Pham, Terra Gardner, Amanda Bragg and Scott Gemmell; six step-grandchildren, Michael and Rebecca Hicks, Nicholas Davis, Chris and Jake Claypool and Jennifer Gibney; and a great-grandchild, Adin Gardner.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with Pastor Bill Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Layland Cemetery, Chestnut Knob.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

OAK HILL — Gussie Marie Sexton Spade went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at her home in Oak Hill.

Born Sept. 24, 1913, at Dunloop, she was the daughter of the late Charley and Laura Bell Mitchell Sexton.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lacy Lee Spade; brothers, Harry Sexton, Hazel Sexton and Russell Sexton; and sisters, Mabel Stinson and Gladys Collier.

Gussie (known as Granny) was a kind and faithful homemaker who lived on Rhodes Street for 60 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include the only daughter, Linda Jenkins and husband, Bill; two grandchildren, Deborah Henderson and Brian Jenkins; and three great-grandchildren Tiffany Yeager, Landon Jenkins and Tyler Jenkins.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Darrell McNeely officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum.

Ruth May Gazdik Stevens



LAKE MILTON, Ohio — Ruth May Gazdik Stevens, 80, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio, of natural causes.

Ruth was born in Akron, Ohio, on Oct. 11, 1927, the daughter of the late Ste-ve and Anna Tupek Gazdik.

She married her loving husband of 60 years, Linden Stevens, on Aug. 10, 1947, and he passed away on April 19, 2007. They had lived in Lake Milton since 1948, formerly of Akron.

Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and a devoted loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and her flower garden. Ruth was a member of Lakeview Assembly of God in Lake Milton.

Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Breznak, Esther Maglovsky and Ann Walsh; and three brothers, Arthur, Steve and John Gazdik.

Ruth is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Cheryl Stevens of Lake Milton, Mark and Linda Stevens of Berlin Center, Ohio, and Philip and Sandra Stevens of Grassy Meadows; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lakeview Assembly of God. Burial will follow in Eckis Cemetery, Diamond, Ohio.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at James Funeral Home, Newton Falls, Ohio.

Helen Gene Stone



ANSTED — Helen Gene Stone, 80, went home to be with the Lord in the loving arms of Jesus at her residence at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, following a long illness.

She was born Sept. 8, 1926, at Sandstone, the daughter of the late John J. and Chloe Bragg.

As a child she moved to Ansted and remained there for the rest of her life. She loved the area. In 1963, she became a minister of the gospel with Assembly of God and Full Gospel Missions. She basically served the Lord all of her life. She was a loving wife to her husband, Scranton, and a loving mother to her daughter, Mary.

She was preceded in death by her loving family members, husband, Scranton; parents, John J. and Chloe Bragg; and sisters, Garnet, Velma and Ina.

Survivors are a daughter and her husband, Mary and John Bowman; a brother, John M. and wife, Maxine Bragg; grandchildren, Laura and Jamie, Arnold, Crystal M. Bowman, Vickie and Dave Henderer and John A. Bowman; great-grandchildren, Emily and Justin Arnold and Summer Henderer; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor, with the Rev. Freddie Parkins Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

There will be no public visitation.

Donzie Wood



BURTON, Mich. — Donzie E. Wood, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Hurley Medical Center.

Mr. Wood was born Jan. 12, 1923, at Flat Top, the son of Posey and Clara (Lawson) Wood.

He came to Michigan in 1947. He was a die maker with General Motors Corp. for 31 years, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Wood was a veteran of World War II and was a member of Davi-son VFW Post No. 4087 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 629 in Flint, Mich.

Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Dement and husband, Mike, of Davison. Mich.; son, Bobby Wood and wifem Tammym of Grand Blanc, Mich., four grandchildren, Ian Dement, Jennifer Henderson, Sarah Owens and Jeremy Wood; five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Orval Wood and wife, Pauline, and Bernerd Wood and wife, Freida; and a sister, Nola Lane.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sarah, in 1992.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road, Grand Blanc Township. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation with the family was 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts in his name may be offered to the American Cancer Society.
