Roy Edward Bailey



HUBERT, N.C. — Roy Edward Bailey, 60, of Hubert, N.C., formerly of Long Branch, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2007, of a sudden illness.

Born June 19, 1947, at Bee Branch, he was the son of Susie Weaver Bailey of Scarbro, formerly of Long Branch, and the late Corbit W. Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, George Smith.

Roy was a 1966 graduate of Mount Hope High School, Mount Hope. He retired in 1987 with 20 years of service in the U.S. Army. He had received the highest appointment of the International Moose Lodge as Deputy Su-preme Governor of the State of North Carolina in 2007. He was loving, caring, and devoted to family and friends everywhere. He never met a stranger.

In addition to his mother, he will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 29 years, Donna Smith Bailey; mother-in-law, Lillian Smith, both of Hubert, N.C.; two sons, Michael Bailey of North Carolina and Roy Bailey of California; three daughters, Lynne (Nick) Wheeland of North Carolina, Nancy (Stuart) Tenggren, and Connie (Andrew) Spielberger, all of California; a grandson whom he adored, Bailey Wheeland of North Carolina; four granddaughters, Kass Wheeland of North Carolina, and Chloe, Ellia, and Ava Tenggren, all of California; three brothers, Clyde (Cleo) Bailey of Princewick, William (Paula) Bailey of Mount Hope, and Tracy (Ruby) Bailey of Gloucester, Va.; two sisters, Patricia (Mickey) Bailey of Clear Creek and Gracie (Bobby) Holley of Pax; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

A Celebration Tribute of his life will be held Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 5 p.m. at the Swansboro Moose Lodge #1425, 161 Norris Road, Swansboro, NC 28584.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to his wife: Donna Bailey, 248 Bear Creek Road, Hubert, NC 28539.

RONCEVERTE — Elizabeth Nora Bennett, 75, passed away Friday, July 6, 2007.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James W. Brooks



PINEVILLE — James “Woody” Brooks, 65, of Pineville passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007, in Bowers Hospice House, in Beckley, after a courageous fight with cancer.

Born Feb. 11, 1942, in Pineville, he was the son of the late Elva and Zetta Tolliver Brooks.

He was a retired miner from Eastern Associated Coal Company. He loved people and was always ready and willing to help anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, a daughter, Robin Cline; three brothers, Kelly, Roy and Dee Brooks; and two sisters, Edith Pettry and Audie Nelson, preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leola Atwell Brooks; two daughters, Kim Morgan and her husband, Roger, and Kris Ann Brooks; four grandchildren, Jennifer Lonker and her husband, Jason, Kara Steele and her husband, Billy, Jacque Canada, and Bobby Smith Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Robbie, Robin, Kaileigh, Kyle and Colton Lonker and Madison Lynne Clark; two sisters, Ada Anderson of Princeton and Dona Tilley of New Mexico. He is also survived by a host of friends, nephews, and nieces.

The family would like to thank his caregivers, Tracey Lane, Tonya Hurd, and Tammy Daniels for the special care they gave Woody.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Goode officiating. Burial will follow in the Coon Fork Cemetery, Keyrock.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon Tuesday until time of the service.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Woody will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Judy Sue Hippert Keffer



Judy Sue Hippert Keffer, 51, of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, July 8, 2007.

Judy loved music, swimming, hiking, working in her garden, and being active with people in her community. She was a very energetic, artistic, creative, and caring individual. She taught high school biology and earth science for seven years in the Craig County public schools before becoming a very devoted full-time mom in 1988. She was an activist in her community with her interest being world peace, protecting the environment, and feminist issues such as gender equity.

Judy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ira Coiner and Margaret Glee Judy Coiner of Covington, Va., and Moundsville, W.Va., Margaret Stokey Watts and Tom Watts of Covington, Va., and Ronceverte, W.Va.

She is survived by her parents, Frederick Vetro Hippert and Elizabeth “Betty” Coiner Hippert, of Lewisburg, W.Va.; husband of 23 years, Lyndell Keffer; daughters, Ashley Glee Keffer and Mallory Forrest Keffer, all of Blacksburg; brother, Philip Hippert and wife Marsha, of Goochland; brother, Andrew Hipski and wife Yolanda, of Richmond; nephews, Matthew Hippert and Elliot Hipski; nieces, Stephanie Hippert and Laura Beth Hippert.

Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Hodges officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg, Va.

Phillip Edward Noel



Phillip Edward Noel, 77, of Stanaford, W.Va., passed away Friday, July 6, 2007. Born April 4, 1930, he is the son of the late Paul and Mae Noel.

Phillip was a pharmacist who worked at Colony Drug and Country Roads Pharmacy. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Phillip was an active member of the Beckley Art Group and Animal Shelter. He was an accomplished pianist and an avid gardener. He often held tours of his gardens at his home.

Phillip graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in pharmacy and also attended the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago majoring in piano.

In addition to his parents, Phillip was preceded in death by a brother, Duane Noel, and a sister, Phyllis Noel Porter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Marjorie Noel of Stanaford; son Jeffrey Noel of Leesburg, Va.; daughters Renee Noel Arbet of Valley Forge, Pa., and Lisa Noel of Wilmington, N.C.; three grandchildren, Scott Arbet, Greg Arbet, Eric Arbet all of Valley Forge, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Charles V. “Sonny” Williams officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

HERNDON — Tammy Sue O’Neal, 45, of Herndon, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, in a Beckley hospital, following a sudden illness.

RONCEVERTE — Della K. Patton, 88, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., after a long illness.

Born June 8, 1919, in White Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Rose Della Vandevander Keyes.

Mrs. Patton had been a lifelong resident at Ronceverte, member of the Ronceverte Church of God, and was a homemaker.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Patton Jr.; a sister, Estelle Milstead; and a brother, Billy Keyes.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda Cook and husband, Belford, of Austinville, Va., Genevieve Stanifer and husband, Jim, of Desputanta, Va., Mary Catherine Freeman and husband, Duane, of Max Meadows, Va., and Brenda Hanhart and husband, Mike, of Huddleston, Va.; four sons, Larry G. Patton and wife, Mary Ruth, of Ronceverte, Jerry Lee Patton of Elkins, Phillip R. Patton and wife, Alice, of Hopewell, Va., and Charles E. Patton and fiancee, Martha Boggess of Second Creek; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, family, and friends.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Longanacre Funeral Home Chapel, Fairlea, with Rev. Mike Estep officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Chapel Cemetery, Organ Cave.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born Nov. 11, 1911, in Victor, W.Va.

Birdie was preceded in death by husband, Jacob Earl Webb; and daughter, Mabel Long.

Those left to cherish her memory include grandson, David Wayne Long and wife Cheryl of Bradley, W.Va.; and great-grandson, Heath Long of Beckley, W.Va.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Grandview Memory Gardens, Tazewell, Va.
