Celeste Champe





ANSTED — Celeste Champe, 96, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at home with her niece, Nancy Cole, great-niece, Kathy Sweet, and Hospice nurse, Linda Hayes, by her side.

Celeste was born Sept. 28, 1910, in Fayette County, the daughter of the late Clowney French Champe and Oma Deitz Champe.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Champe; sisters, Mary Beaver, Fonetia Painter, Maggie Dietz, Nora Walkup and Vera Deitz; and nephews, Gene Painter and Charles Fox.

She is survived by her brother, Woodrow Champe of South Charleston; nieces and nephews, Nancy Cole of Ansted, Lena Faye Johnson of Sissonville, Becky Mittelman of Davidson, N.C., Henry Painter of Bellville, Ohio, Johnny Painter of Marion, Ohio, Richard Painter of Marion, Gene Plummer of Texas and Libby Simmons of South Charleston.

In addition, Celeste had 18 great-nieces and nephews, 20 great-great-nieces and nephews and five great-great-great-nieces and nephews.

Celeste worked at several car dealerships in the Charleston area before retiring as credit manager at Bert Wolfe Ford. While working, Celeste lived at Kenna Homes and attended Humphreys United Methodist Church. Upon retirement, she returned to Ansted where she lived independently until late fall 2006.

Besides family, Celeste had many friends who loved her dearly. At Christmastime, Celeste sent and received well over 100 Christmas cards from friends and family. Celeste always offered a visitor an invitation to eat cookies, her famous “Scrambles” or ice cream and pie. She always thought of others and remembered them on their birthdays or during difficult times. She brought sunshine to others through her frequent phone calls and little notes, signed “CC.” Celeste enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, especially feeding the hummingbirds and growing flowers. She was a living example of grace and faith which many of us will try to emulate for years to come.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Ansted, with Philip Dent officiating. Burial will follow in Dietz Cemetery, Victor.

Friends may call one hour before service. No evening visitation is planned.

Reva M. Crookshanks





Reva M. Crookshanks, 85, of Clear Creek, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

Born Feb. 12, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Martha Cantley Workman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard B. Crookshanks; son, Milton Gene Crookshanks; and several brothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Glena M. Shaffer and her husband, Bill, of Charleston; two grandsons, David Crookshanks of Crab Orchard and Gregory Shaffer and his wife, Sara, of Sissonville; a granddaughter, Tina Sutherland of Sissonville; and several great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Loretta Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Michael Kious Cutlip





ABINGDON, Va. — Michael Kious Cutlip, 61, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at his home.

Michael was born Dec. 19, 1945, in Richwood and grew up in Nicholas County. He was a son of the late Frank Cutlip and Elizabeth Sturgill Cutlip.

Michael was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church and Bascom United Methodist Church in West Virginia. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam as a medic pilot. Michael had worked in the coal industry for over 30 years. He was a former employee of Pittston Coal Co. and was currently employed as the director of human resources at Cumberland Resources Coal Co.

Michael loved his family very much and was always willing to help a friend or neighbor in need.

His survivors include his wife, Mariann Cutlip; his daughters, Andrea Cutlip of San Diego, Calif., and Emily Cutlip of Abingdon; his father-in-law, Frank Bivens of Wolfsburg; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Henry and Penny Bivens of Crawley.

Service will be 7 p.m. today at Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, with the Rev. Luther Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends 6 p.m. until the time of service today. Committal and burial service will be 3 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with the Rev. Charles F. ‘C.F.’ Dobbins





OAK HILL — Charles “C.F.” Dobbins of Oak Hill passed away at home on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at the age of 92.

He was born in Peabody, Tenn., on July 7, 1914. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Lee Lonzo Dobbins and Ethel Bernice Richardson Dobbins; a sister, Sara Sanders; and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Ann Tawney Dobbins, on May 25, 2000.

He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, a member of Oak Hill Masonic Lodge No. 120 AF&AM; and a retired UMWA member. He was a former manager of the Kroger Co. in Montgomery and Oak Hill.

Mr. Dobbins was a small business owner, having owned several businesses. Dobbins’ Restaurant is one for which he is most remembered. He was an outstanding cook. He worked and retired from the mines in the late 1960s. His greatest enjoyment was gardening and raising a huge variety of flowers of which he gained recognition and an award. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, community and his close friend, B.J. Bernath.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Charles Richard Dobbins and his wife, Margaret, of Mineral Wells; his daughter, Doris A. Broach and her husband, Thomas, of Oak Hill; three grandchildren, Steven L. Grunenberg of Oak Hill, Charles R. Dobbins of Richmond, Va., and Taunya L. Jones of South Charleston; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Dobbins.

Service will be 2 p.m., Friday, March 9, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with Pastor Ron George Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Louise J. Johnson





SYLVESTER — Louise J. Johnson, 86, of Sylvester, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at her home after a long illness.



She was born Oct. 30, 1920, at Packsville, a daughter of the late Jake and Sadie Spaulding Jarrell.

She attended Sylvester Church of God.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm E. Johnson; three daughters, Bobby Jean, Odessia and Kay; a son-in-law, Randall Price; a grandson, Stephen Burgess; a sister, Laura Thompson; and a brother, Ronda Jarrell.

She is survived by two daughters, Deanna Burgess and husband, Bill, of Branford, Fla., and Delores Price of Sylvester; grandchildren, Terry Burgess of Branford and Toni Daniels of Grove City, Ohio; a great-grandson, Brandon Daniels of Grove City; and a beloved pet, Missy.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. Roy Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Ballard-Jarrell Cemetery, Dry Creek.

Gordon Lacy, born May 31, 1931, at Hazy, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. He was the son of the late Ted and Pansy Lacy.

William ‘Clell’ McClung





NETTIE — William “Clell” McClung, 70, entered into eternal life on Tuesday morning, March 6, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley following a short illness.

Born Nov. 17, 1936, at Carl, he was the son of the late Arden and Juanita Trout McClung.

He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church of Nettie, a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.

“Clell” was a No. 1 grandpa, dad and husband, and his smile will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerold McClung.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Mary Dorsey McClung; a daughter, Kimberly Meadows and husband, Dan, of Logansport, Ind.; a son, Douglas McClung and wife, Peggy, of Charleston; six grandchildren, Ashley, David and Michael Meadows, and Joshua, Megan and Holden McClung; two sisters, Elma Johnson and husband, Richard, of Denver, Colo., and Faustine Ervin and husband, Don, of Woodbine, Md.; and a brother, Harold McClung and wife, Carol, of Crawley.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Nettie, with the Revs. Ron McClung and Stuart Stover officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Nettie.

PAX — Johnny R. Parker, 51, of Pax, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at his home.

Born Jan. 4, 1956, at Oak Hill, he was the son of Josephine Copney Parker of Oak Hill and the late Eugene Parker.’

He was a mechanic for Hildebrand Hauling of Oak Hill.

Johnny waws an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Carter Parker; a son, Johnny “Pee-Wee” Baughan and wife, Karen, of Wooster, Ohio; four daughters, Amanda Williams and husband, Mark, of Oak Hill, Carmen Wobo and husband, David, of Sand Branch, Crystal Murdock and husband, Anthony, of Oak Hill and Lori Ward and husband, Frank Jr., of Corliss; and four sisters, Helen Jean Green of Georgia, Deloris Ann Smith and Annie Canterbury, both of Oak Hill, and Betty Kuhl of Mount Hope.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren whom he loved dearly; his loving mother-in-law, Billie Carter of Mount Hope; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joe and Mary Carter, Bonnie and Eugene Marshal and Shelia and Donald Hurley; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Spirit and Truth Ministries with Pastor Sam R. Calloway Jr. and the Rev. Julius Whittenburg officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Duane Spencer Phlegar





COLUMBUS, Ohio — Duane Spencer Phlegar, 78, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, after a long illness.

Duane was an Air Force veteran, avid fisherman and amateur pilot.

He was preceded in death by father, Ernest James Phlegar, and mother, Lilly Pearl Phlegar of Oak Hill.

He is survived by wife, Mary T. Phlegar; sons, Duane T. (Lois) Phlegar of Columbus, Edward J. (Lisa) Phlegar of Lawrence, Kan., Arthur T. Phlegar of Buffalo, N.Y., and Mark (Sue) Phlegar of Fredericksburg, Va.; brother, Lacy E. Phlegar of Toledo, Ohio; four grandsons; three granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Hilliard United Methodist Church, Hilliard, Ohio.

Sarah Ruth Rhodes





RAINELLE — Sarah Ruth Rhodes, 76, formerly of Bellburn, died early Monday morning, March 5, 2007, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 6, 1930, in Greenbrier County, she was a daughter of the late Benson and Laura Wickline Highlander.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Elmer Rhodes, in 1972; a daughter, Rhonda Hardy, and a son, Raymond Eugene Rhodes.

Survivors include five daughters, Kathryn Louise Willis of Rainelle, Linda Rhodes of Rainelle, Laura Loudermilk of Marfrance, Virginia Chartrand of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Wilda Corder of Troutman, N.C.; four sons, John Rhodes of Rainelle, Martin Rhodes of Milton, N.C., Buford Rhodes of Rainelle and James Rhodes of Mount Airy, N.C.; four sisters, Effie Lindsay of Landisburg, Frances Currence of Charmco, Mary Jane Bostic of Union and Bertha Turner of Hillsboro, N.C.; a brother, Selby Highlander of Rupert; and numerous grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Bennie Kenney officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Hazel V. Sayre Tolliver





DAMASCUS, Va. — Hazel V. Sayre Tolliver, 91, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007, in Damascus.

She was born March 4, 1916, in McDowell County. She had lived in Duo from 1948 to 1979; she moved to Washington County, Va., in 1979. She was a daughter of the late Daniel and Lula Green and was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles James Sayre, who passed away May 28, 1968, and her second husband, Blaine Tolliver, who passed away Feb. 9, 1999. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lula Mae Sayre, a son, Charles L. Sayre, five brothers and a sister.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Damascus.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Sue Vass and her husband, Benjamin, of Piedmont, S.C., and Ruth D. Franco and her husband, Paul, of Salem, Va.; three sons, James K. Sayre of Salem, Va., Gary H. Sayre and his wife, Caroline, of Pauline, S.C., and John H. Sayre and his wife, Janice, of Kernersville, N.C.; a stepson, Arlee Tolliver of Abingdon, Va.; two stepdaughters, Stella Dalton of McRoss and Evelyn Richardson of Taylors Valley, Va.; three brothers, Charles Green of Flatwoods, Ky., Freeman Green of Calhoun, Ga., and Jay Green of Monroe, N.C.; a sister, Juanita Harris Rogowski of Baltimore, Md.; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 6 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Damascus, with the Rev. Wayne Guynn officiating. The family will receive friends today following service at the church until 9 p.m. Committal service and interment will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with the Rev. Youel Altizer officiating.

Roger S. Zickafoose





LOOKOUT — Roger S. Zickafoose, 50, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a battle with cancer.

Roger was born June 16, 1956, the son of Betty Rogers Zickafoose and the late Herbert H. Zickafoose. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Carlos and Dorothy Dixon; and brother-in-law, Curtis Dixon.

He leaves behind the following loved ones, mother, Betty; wife, Pamela Dixon Zickafoose; brothers, John and Daniel Zickafoose and his wife, Lynn; sisters, Karen Adkins and husband, Rick, and Lee Ann Zickafoose-Jones; nephews, Chad and Beau Adkins, Seth Jones, Curtis, Kevin and Kyle Dixon, Dana II, Robert C., and Ryan Dixon; nieces, Kristin Adkins, Kaitlyn Jones, Amber Brumfield, Karen H. Martin and Robyn Fitzwater; great-nephew and niece, Tyler Zickafoose and Emma Brumfield; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Carlos, Connard, Dana Dixon and Drema Hanshew. Roger also leaves behind a host of family and friends, several of whom spent many hours with him during his hospitalization. Some of those include Vickie Dixon, Reg Hayslett, Bill Davis, John Holcomb, Kevin Haynes and Tom Adkins. In fear of omitting someone, all of his wonderful friends won’t be listed, but the family appreciates their daily calls, visits and prayers. The family must, however, recognize the extraordinary friendship of Danny Young, who organized the restoration of Roger’s prized antique Jeep. Roger will also be missed by his cocker spaniel, Overload.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with Pastors Mike Loudermilk and Kenny Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
