Louise Carper Baldwin

UNION — Louise Carper Baldwin, 93, of Union, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 2, 2007, at her home following a long illness.

She was born in Craig County, Va., on Aug. 30, 1913, a daughter of the late John Allen and Emma Rubel Carper.

Mrs. Baldwin was a homemaker and farmer, and she was affiliated with the Baptist church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil F. Baldwin, on June 27, 1999.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Ware Philipp and her husband, Donald, of Union.

Graveside rites will be 1 p.m. Monday at Greenhill Cemetery, Union, with the Rev. Bob Ratliff officiating.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at Groves Funeral Home, Union.

Groves Funeral Home, Union, is in charge of arrangements.

Leona Biggs

MATHENY — Leona Biggs, 95, of Matheny, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007.

Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, is serving the Biggs family.

Thomas L. ‘Tommy’ Bratton Jr.

WHARTON — Thomas L. “Tommy” Bratton Jr., 68, of Wharton, passed away Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Sr. and Mary Ethel Waller Bratton.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA and was a Navy veteran. He was also a member of Barrett Church of the Nazarene and an Extra Class Ham Radio operator.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Bratton III and Sue of Beckley; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Teddy Slone of Wharton; sisters, Jeraldine Dunn and Judy Carr, both of Middletown, Ohio; five grandchildren, Allison and Randy Clements of Savannah, Ga., Gregory Allen Bratton and Lora, also of Savannah, Matthew and Laura Slone of Wharton, and Shaleena Bratton of Beckley; three great-grandchildren, Virginia, Logan and Morgan of Savannah; and one stepgrandchild and his wife, Capts. Donnie Joe and HwaJin Hurt of Baghdad, Iraq.
