Eldridge Amick Jr.

Eldridge Amick Jr., passed away Monday, February 25, 2013.

Military graveside rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, in the Carl Baptist Church Cemetery, Carl. Military honors will be given by the Nicholas County Honor Guard.

Brenda Sue Bailey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Sue Bailey on Friday, May 10th, 2013. Brenda has been in declining health for a number of years. She was 55 years of age.

One of three children, Brenda was born on May 14th, 1957, at Pineville. She was the daughter of the late Martin Estep and Georgia Leovia Barnett Bailey. Her brothers, Henry Ellison and Lanta Darrell Bailey have preceded her in death.

Brenda was an accomplished poet. Her gift of words in prose touched many people’s lives along the way. Brenda was a long time peer counselor with the Mountain State Center for Independent Living, where she was also served on the board of directors. In the last several years Brenda was involved in the West Virginia Mental Health Consumers’ Association.

Although Brenda’s biological family has passed away, she was fortunate to have the family of Linda Luikart Tuncsiper. Linda, her dear friend and “Sister of the Heart” preceded her in death on March 13th, 2009. Linda’s children, Ermine Tuncsiper Fornelius and her husband, Michael and their children, Sam and Logan and Erdem Tuncisper and his wife, Julie survive. They were blessed to have Aunt Brenda in their lives. Many friends survive as well.

We will remember Brenda all the days of our lives for her kindness and understanding to others who were in need.

Today, Thursday, May 16th, at 1 p.m. we will honor Brenda with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Paul Zutaut will be officiating. There will be a private burial for Brenda in the Bailey Family plot at the Davis Cemetery at Mt. Tabor. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

Scott Allen Carmichael

LOOKOUT — Scott Allen Carmichael, 43, of Lookout, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a long illness.

Born July 10, 1969, in Beckley, he was a disabled FEMA inspector and instructor, and attended the Hilton Village Baptist Church.

Survivors include: his parents, Wallis Franklin Carmichael and Ann Virginia (Hefner) Carmichael of Lookout; a daughter, MacKenzie Lenn Carmichael of Piney View; and two brothers, Michael and Stephen Carmichael, both of Lookout.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18, the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Eric Keister officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 18, at the funeral chapel one hour prior to the funeral service.

Willard Glen Cochran of Eccles, 57, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

David Lee Collins

Mr. David Lee Collins, 68, of Bluefield, formerly of Beckley, died Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Born April 13, 1945, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Peter H. Collins Sr., and Rosetta Thurmond Collins.

Mr. Collins was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Madeline Burk Collins and brothers, Eugene, Alfonso, Peter Jr., and Jesse.

Those left to cherish precious memories are brothers, Frank Collins of San Antonio, TX, Edward Collins of Irvington, NJ, Rev. Charles (Sharon) Collins Sr., of Bluefield; sister, Louticia Wardrick of Irvington, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral service will be 12 noon, Saturday, May 18, 2013, at New Hope Baptist Church, 304 Worley Road, Beckley, with Rev. Charles Collins Sr., and Nathaniel Carey officiating.

Peggy Lee Grubb

Peggy Grubb, 76, of Farley Hill, died Monday, May 13, 2013, after a long illness at home.

Born May 21, 1936, she was the daughter of Foncie and Frieda Campbell.

Mrs. Grubb was born and raised and a lifelong member of the Farley Hill Community and a member of the Missionary Ridge Baptist Church, Princewick.

Peggy enjoyed camping, horseback riding and the Greenbrier River. She loved spending time with her family.

Mrs. Grubb was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Campbell; husband, Virgil Lee Grubb; two sons, Douglas Allen Grubb and Jason Richard Grubb; also two grandsons, David Thompson and Michael Grubb.

Those left to cherish her memory include, one sister, Margaret Kamakani of Oregon; three daughters, Patsy Grubb Farmer of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., Cindy Grubb Wright of Bassett, Va., LeAndra Grubb Spain of Soddy Daisy; three sons, Richard Grubb of Texas, Stewart Grubb of Farley Hill, and Terry Grubb of Farley Hill; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and Kameel Mohammad.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Dennis Epperly and Lowell Black officiating.

Burial will follow at Farley Hill Cemetery.

Grandchildren, Paul Thornton, Ryan Cooper, Jason Grubb, James Thompson, and Jeremy Grubb will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lacy Crawford Humphries

BIG CREEK — Lacy Crawford Humphries, 85, of Big Creek, died Monday, May 13, 2013, at the Summers Nursing & Rehab Center following a long illness.

Born May 24, 1927, at Pence Springs, she was a daughter of the late Homer R. and Lillian Martin Crawford.

Lacy was a member of the Big Creek Baptist Church and loved reading her bible and attending church. She was a homemaker and loved gardening, canning and quilting.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Eva Lynn Humphries; two sisters, Louise Adkins and Viola Crawford; two brothers, Herbert Crawford and Hubert Crawford.

Those left to cherish her memory include one son, Howard Lee Humphries and Betty Freber Humphries of Georgia; three grandchildren, Jody Ellen Humphries, Margaret Bernice Humphries, Crystal Humphries all of Georgia, James and Michael Freber of Florida; eight great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Crawford of Hilldale, Bobby Crawford of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Gladys Lilly of Charleston, S.C. and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Thomas Lynn Maddy officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawford Cemetery at Big Creek. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral parlors.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Charlotte Marie Massinople

Charlotte Massinople, 96, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, surrounded by her children.

Charlotte was born in Washington, D.C., on February 19, 1917. She was the daughter of Placido and Maria Caponiti who had immigrated to the United States from Fumedenisi, Sicily. During her early childhood, her family returned to Sicily (Catania) before permanently settling in Washington, D.C. After attending Washington schools and graduating from Strayer College, she embarked on a career as a Stenographer with Bell Telephone and Telegraph.

Charlotte was married on September 3, 1939, to her beloved husband of 69 years, Charles A. Massinople. Charles founded Mabscott Supply Company in 1942, where Charlotte served as the first Vice President and Secretary of the company. In addition, she served for many years on the firm’s Board of Directors.

Charlotte was a role model as wife and mother, supporting her family and community throughout the years. Often her role was one of inspiration and ideas, leaving others to be the public face of accomplishments. Her clarity of thought, gentle manner, and eternal optimism is her lasting legacy.

Charlotte was a life-long member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and assisted in the founding of St. Francis School. She was a member of Black Knight Country Club and Glade Springs with her husband. They established the Massinople Memorial Fund at Beckley Area Foundation. Highlighting her contributions to our area, the Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA recognized and honored Charlotte and Charles with the Spirit of Beckley Award in 2001.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Placido and Maria; her husband, Charles A. Massinople; a son, Anthony F. Massinople; and brothers, John, Natale and Frederick Caponiti.

Charlotte is survived by her children, Marion Charles “Mike” Massinople and his wife, Kathleen “Kitty,” of Beckley; Mary Grace Massinople Johnson and her husband, William Parke, of Morgantown; Charles Edward Massinople and his wife, Wilma, of Mars Hill, NC; John David Massinople of Charlotte, NC; Alicia Massinople Scott and her husband, Richard “Rick,” of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, Michael Charles Massinople and his wife, Kelly; Dr. Christina Massinople Park and her husband, Dr. William “Shawn” Park; Dr. David Samuel Massinople and his wife, Sharon; Angela Johnson Ellison and her husband, Ryan; Nicholas Parke Johnson; Chala Marie Massinople; Sam Theo Massinople; William Anthony Massinople; Mia Judith Scott; Cameron Richard Scott; and Natalie Charlotte Scott; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan Charles Massinople; Sophia Eileen Massinople; Michael Kessler Park; Mackenzie Alston Park; Alessia Loren Massinople; Milana Kay Massinople; and Piper Quinn Ellison. She is also survived by Barbara Massinople, widow of son Anthony Fredrick Massinople, of Wellington, KS; two sisters, Alice Sardone of Silver Spring, MD and Stella Staley of Peterborough, NH; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charlotte was attended to and was grateful for her exceptional caregivers in her later years: Rita Wills and Visiting Angels Megan Acord and Bonnie Wright. Additionally, she was assisted by Beverly Gordon and Bill Horton. The family also extends special thanks to Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

A funeral liturgy will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus officiating. A rite of committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, where a Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m, led by Deacon Don Wise.

OAK HILL — Lowell D. Maynor, 70, of Oak Hill, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Arrangements are incomplete. The care of the Maynor family was given to Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.

Richard Joshua ‘Josh’ Minnick

Richard Joshua “Josh” Minnick, age 34, of Soak Creek, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Born on February 11, 1979, in Beckley, he was the son of Dixie Tyree Atkinson of Soak Creek and the late Robert Doyle Minnick Jr. He was the step son of Frank Atkinson of Soak Creek.

Josh was disabled, last working at Kentucky Fried Chicken as a cook.   

A sister Cynthia Diahn Lester preceded him in death, and by a step brother, Michael G. Atkinson.

Other  than his mother survivors include his children, Chelsea Dawn Minnick and Richard Joshua Minnick Jr. of North Carolina; two brothers, Robert Joseph Minnick of North Carolina and Thomas Anthony McComas of North Carolina; step brothers: Francis, Mark, Joseph, and Paul Atkinson. A paternal grandmother, Mary Minnick of Pennsylvania. A special friend, Lewis Hughes of Helen, W.Va.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ruth Nickols officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Saturday.
