Garnet Vernon Adkins
Garnet Vernon Adkins, 75, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House following a brief battle with cancer.
Born October 31, 1937, at Sandstone, he was a son of the late Forest Wesley Adkins and Madeline Meadows Adkins.
Mr. Adkins served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1961. He attended Hinton High School and graduated from the Advanced Auto Diesel College in Nashville, TN, in 1962. He was employed with Barrack’s in Beckley from 1963 to 1968 and was a mechanic for the WV State Police, Beckley Detachment, retiring after 26 years of service.
Mr. Adkins was a member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Barbara Ann Adkins, and one brother, Charles Wesley Adkins.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Drema L. Adkins; one son, Randy W. Adkins of Beckley; six brothers, Warren Adkins and wife Lisa of Winchester, VA, Gary Adkins of Brooks, Farrell Adkins and wife Susie of McLeansville, NC, Robert Adkins and wife Roberta of Thurman, OH, Stephen Adkins and wife Denise of Burlington, NC, and Acie Ayers and wife Phyllis of Barksdale; two sisters, Carol Thompson of Gibsonville, NC, and Wanda Ball and husband Buddy of Talcott; one sister-in-law, Lou Adkins of Beckley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors with Pastor Gary Adkins officiating. Friends may call from noon until time of services at the funeral parlors. Burial will follow in the Fox Cemetery at Brooks.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Shirley Guthrie Buttrick
CHARLESTON — Shirley Guthrie Buttrick, 78, of Charleston, died on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Good Living Personal Care Home in Malden, after a long battle with dementia.
She was born to the late Everett and Erma Daniel Guthrie in Glen Rogers, W.Va. A graduate of Glen Rogers High School, Shirley also attended Morris Harvey College. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Danille Guthrie Sheppard.
Shirley retired from the WV Department of Employment Security in 1996, but continued to work during the WV Legislative sessions as a proofreader in the Senate and, later, in the House Journal Room. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Charleston and the O.E.S. Tiskawah Chapter.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kim and John Robertson of Charleston, her brother and sister-in-law Mike and Carla Guthrie of Charleston, her granddaughters Bethany Creedon and husband Dylan of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Allyson Robertson of Charleston and fiancé Jason Shipe of Mathias, W.Va. Shirley is also survived by her special aunt Lauretta Summers of Summersville, W.Va.
Shirley’s greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughters, Bet and Ally. Nanna was a very important part of their lives. Their bond was strong and their love was great.
A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at a later date.
The family gives special thanks to the staff at Good Living Personal Care Home for the loving care they provided to Shirley, especially Leslie, Pat, Vickie, Kim, and Karen. We could not have found better.

Marvin Ray Cline Sr.
Marvin Ray Cline, Sr., 78, of Bradley passed away on Saturday, May 4th, 2013, in Huntington, WV, following a long illness.
Marvin was the son of the late George Cline and Maggie Gilkeson Cline.
Marvin was a retired coal miner, mechanic and mill worker who spent his retirement enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed mowing his yards, playing with his fur babies, and cooking out on his grill. Marvin was a hard worker that painted the picture of the ideal family man.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Virginia Rice Cline, a son Marvin Ray “Buddy” Cline, a daughter Marlene Maggie Cline Wriston, his brothers Gary and David Cline, and a great-grandson, David Wriston, III.
Those left to cherish his memory are his companion and friend Agatha Wriston of Kingston, his daughter Becky Hamro and husband Ernest “Butch” of Bluefield, daughter Pamela Byrge of Bluefield, a son-in-law David A. Wriston Sr. and fiancée Beverly Watts of Bradley, numerous grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews that he loved very much. Pallbearers will be David Wriston, II, Derek Wriston, Cecil Whitt, Billy Whitt, Matthew Sowder and Danny Shelton. “He was a good man.”
Services will be Wednesday, May 8th, 2013, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley at 1 p.m. with the Pastors Bill Vest and Arlotte Stover officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

VICTOR — Christine Fox, 88, of Victor, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, following a long illness.
Christine was born March 9, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Fred Pridemore and Grace Basham Pridemore.
She was preceded in death by her husband David Fox; an infant daughter, Evelyn Fox; eight sisters and brothers.
She was a precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a retired receptionist for Hawks Nest State Park.
Survivors are three sons, Carry Huffman and wife Karen of Ansted, Charles Fox of Edmond and Gary Fox of Hico; one daughter, Randa Krise of Deland, Fla.; a brother, Charles D. Pridemore and wife Wanda, of Bluefield, Va.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor David Bennett officiating. By her request she will be cremated after the service.
Friends may call Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home Chapel.

Norma Ruth Marchant
Norma Ruth Marchant, age 74, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was born in Helen, W.Va., to the late Hayes Maynard and Pearl Lee Gross Maynard and was preceded in death by her sisters Shirley Sanders and Sandra Zella.
Norma was retired from the Smyth County Community Hospital after 21 years and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Ernest “Pete” Marchant; children: Ernest H. “Buddy” Marchant and wife Eve, Painted Post, NY, Ron Marchant and wife Kelly, Marion, Va., Mike Marchant and wife Sue, Marion, Va., Rick Marchant, Marion, Va., Chris Marchant and wife Tonya, Marion, Va. Grandchildren: Trevor Marchant and wife Amy, Brandon Marchant and wife Brandi, Heather Nicole Marchant, Kelsey Marchant, Trae Marchant, Mariah Marchant, Ethan Marchant, Kamran Marchant. Great-Grandchildren: Madison Marchant, Gabe Marchant, Aiden Marchant; sister: Nancy Carol Kendell, South Fulton, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Dean Sanders, Marion; sister-in-law, Betty U. Charley A. Placidi
TAYLOR, Mich. — Charley A. Placidi, 93, of Taylor, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013, following a short illness.
Born March 5, 1920, he was the son of the late Placido and Rose Placidi.
Mr. Placidi was formerly of Helen and a graduate of Mark Twain High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. He was wounded on D-Day during the invasion of Normandy. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from the Cadillac Division of General Motors in 1989.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Sutyak Placidi; one daughter, Denise Lilly; four brothers, Geno Placidi, Lado Placidi, Pete Placidi and Virgil Placidi; three sisters, Edith Placidi, Lena Placidi and Mary Placidi.
Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Gina Motil and her husband Mark of Franklin, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Ashley Lilly Smyth, Aaron Lilly, Kristen Motil and Eric Motil; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, the body has been cremated and will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley at a later date.

Lovell Ann Williams Stover
MAPLE FORK — Lovell Ann Williams Stover, 90, of Maple Fork, died on Monday, May 6, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Born December 1, 1922, at Willis Branch, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Henry Wilson “Bill” and Gussie Beckleheimer Williams.
Lovell was a homemaker who loved to quilt and make cookies and candy at Christmas. She was a crafter and a collector of sea shells and ocean memorabilia. She was a 1941 graduate of Pax High School.
She was the oldest surviving member of the Bradley Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and member of the Women of the Church. She loved her church, church family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy B. Stover (Dec. 18, 1996), a son, Eric Paul Stover, and a sister, Violet Warden.
Survivors left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Rose Mary Ward and husband, Isaac, of Maple Fork; two sons, Lacy Byron Stover and wife, Donna, of Maple Fork and Alan Stover and wife, Wanda, of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Lacy Blaine Stover, Amy Stover, Lori Ward Mooney and Shawn Ward; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Ward, Jacob Ward, Grace Ward, Krisalyn Mooney and Addyson Mooney; and a sister, Mary “Dorothy” Lafferty of Bradley.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope, with Pastor Elizabeth Stone officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Patricia Faye Stover, 71, of Dorothy, went home to be with the Lord following a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

Patricia loved playing the piano and was a member of the Dorothy Church of God.
