Carl (CW) Adams III

Carl (CW) Adams III, 43, of Beckley, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.

Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Dean Adams and the Rev. Lonnie Grear officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Thursday.

Betty G. Morris-Burroughs

CHARLESTON — Betty G. Morris-Burroughs, 81, of Charleston, formerly of Marmet, passed away.

A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Marmet First Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at White Funeral Home in Summersville, with Pastor Dana Gatewood officiating. Interment will follow at Walker Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Steve M. Dickerson

Steve Morris Dickerson, 60, of Herndon Heights passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.

UNION — Ina Marie Hall Grubb, 80 of Union, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 17, 2013.

Funeral services will be 11 am. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the Green Hill Cemetery at Union. Friends may call from 6 from 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105-3678.

Dwight Randolph Hall

BUD — Dwight Randolph Hall, age 59, of Bud, WV, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born on September 26, 1953, in Rock, he was a son of the late James Nathan and Murel Elizabeth Thomas Hall. He had been a resident of Itmann for 10 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Arnold Hall, Granville E. Hall; and a sister, Lucy O. Hall.

Survivors include: Son: James R. Hall and wife Kayla of Bluefield; 2 grandchildren: April and Rebekah Hall; 2 brothers: Richard E. Hall of Itmann and Roy Hall of Beechwood; Special Pets: Dixie and Brown Pup.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Curtis Honaker officiating. Burial will follow at the Hall Family Cemetery in Rock.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 12 to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

James William Hoover Sr.

LAYLAND — James William Hoover Sr., 61, of Chestnut Knob Road, passed away Feb. 17, 2013.

As per his wishes, his body is to be cremated. There will be no services at this time.

Bonnie A. Johnson

Bonnie A. Johnson, 76, of Princewick, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2013, in a Beckley hospital following an extended illness.

Born October 12, 1936, in Fayetteville, WV, to the late Aubrey Lilly and Lenora Murphy Lilly.

Bonnie was a homemaker and enjoyed her flower beds. She also enjoyed reading her Bible and was a member of Coal City Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Ronald Johnson; stepmother, Wanda Coleman; sisters, Opal and Audrey Lilly; and brothers, Howard and Dennis Lilly.

Those surviving include her children, Robert Tingler (Rella) of Princewick, Celia Meadows (Carlos) of Coal City, Judy Atkinson (Raymond) of Orma, Nancy Sparks (Gary) of Princewick, and Barbara Tyree (Frankie) of Clayton, NC; sisters, Loretta Lusk of Oak Grove, Brenda Grahonya of Coal City, Debra Riffe of Raleigh Ridge; brothers, James Lilly (Gale) of Mabscott, Leslie Lilly of Lester, Carlos Lilly (Gloria) of Lester, and Tommy Lilly and wife Janet of Pax; 11 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 12 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Coal City Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held the same morning at the church from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Alvin Ray Kirk

HINTON — Alvin Ray Kirk, 87, of Hinton, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Beckley A.R.H. Hospital following a long illness.

Born January 5, 1926, at Culloden, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Earl E. and Lula May McKeny Kirk.

Mr. Kirk was retired from the United States Air Force, with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant with 27 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre. He then began a career with the United States Postal Service, having worked at Meadow Bridge and Beckley in West Virginia and Orlando, Florida. He served 18 1/2 years with the Postal service. He was a 25-year resident of Hinton and was a member of Hinton First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 AFAM, and Beni Kedem Shrine, and Scottish Rite. Ray was an avid sports fan and loved to fish.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elleanor M. Brogan Kirk.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Vera O’Bryan Kirk. Three sons, Melvin Kirk and wife Michele of Albuquerque, NM, Henry Kirk and wife Corina of Concord, NC, and James Kirk and companion Lucille Shuck of Sandstone, WV. Six grandchildren, Lee Kirk and wife Amber, Chad Kirk and wife Laura, Nathan Kirk, Tiffany Kirk, Sandra Kirk McGrew and Michael Kirk. Four great-grandchildren, Mikayla Kirk, Payton Kirk, Mckeena Kirk and Bella Kirk.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Ronnie Cobb officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville, WV. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Members of Hinton Masonic Lodge will serve as pallbearers.

Genivee Elizabeth Martin

MARIE — Genivee Elizabeth Martin, 91, of Marie, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital in Hinton.

Born June 20, 1921, at Marlinton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Nonia Webster Biggs.

Ms. Martin was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church at Marie. She was also a member of the Marie Ruritan Club, the Ladies Auxiliary at Summers County A.R.H. Hospital and the Marie Friendship Club. She loved to quilt, sew, garden and take care of her flowers. She had lived most of her life in Summers County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Martin, on July 14, 1994. Also preceded by a son, Timothy Martin, sister, Virginia Rippetoe, a half brother, Junior Godfrey, and three grandchildren.

Survivors include six sons, Robert C. “Bob” Martin and wife Marie of Marie, WV, Ronald R. Martin and wife Zetta of Covington, VA, Dewey D. Martin and wife Shelia of Bedford, VA, Jerry E. Martin and wife Brenda of Peytona, WV, Randy P. Martin and wife Debbie of Marie, WV, and Phillip J. Martin and wife Shelia of Shady Spring, WV. One daughter, Sanora Toney and husband Mark of Bradley, WV. One half brother, Charles Biggs of Mt. Hope, WV. One half sister, Jo Ann Sturgill of Coal City, WV. Twenty-six grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at New Hope United Methodist Church at Marie, West Virginia, with Rev. Jo Ann Hartman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Kenneth Harlen Payne

Kenneth Harlen Payne, 82, of Daniels, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013.

Born August 5, 1930, at Blue Jay, WV, to the late Paul P. Payne and Maude Smith Epperly Payne.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Payne; and a sister, Edith Dorsey.

Kenneth served in the United States Air Force stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. He also attended Faith Baptist Church in Prosperity.

Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, married February 10,1953, Mrs. Anna Pearl Bragg Payne, at home; daughter, Kay Ellen Peters (Terry) of Beckley; son, Kenneth Paul Payne (Nancy) of Cool Ridge; sister, Nancy Ellen Payne Maddy of Gahanna, OH; grandchildren, Christopher Payne (Becca), Andrea Williams (Joe), Carrie Gibson (Matt), Caitlin Elswick (Patrick), Cynthia Crook (Chris); 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Larry Halsey officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity where the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 will conduct military graveside rites.

The gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Chris Crook, Christopher Payne, Patrick Elswick, Doug Maddy, Joe Williams, and Matt Gibson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Cliffie Sarandon

Cliffie Sarandon, 96, born Maria Cardullias in Norfork, VA, she moved to Tarpon Springs, FL, shortly after with her family. At 17, she married Greek restaurateur Chris Sarandon and moved to Beckley, WV. After their 1970 divorce, she started a career in Beverly Hills, CA, working as a nanny for Herb Alpert, and Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner, and as a companion for Rita Hayworth. In 1989, she moved back to Tarpon Springs.

She is survived by her son, Chris Sarandon; a sister, Lula Dalacos of Tarpon Springs, FL; and a brother, Deno Cardullias of Clearwater, FL; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Beckley Area Foundation.
