Thomas A. Akers

PINE HILL — Thomas A. Akers, 80, of Pine Hill, went to his eternal home Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at his home.

Born August 21, 1932, at Talcott, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Margaret F. Allen Akers.

He was a member of the Rollynsburg Baptist Church, retired Master Sgt. from the United States Air Force with 22 years of service, member of the Hinton Elks Lodge No. 821, member of the VFW Post 6723 in Alderson. He was a proud graduate of the Talcott “Brain” school. Following his retirement from the Air Force he was a salesman for Blue Grass Electric Co. in Ronceverte. Tom enjoyed spending time with all of his friends at Willowwood where on the golf course they enjoyed all of the good times spent together. The hummingbirds around his house never went hungry as Tom would use 50 pounds of sugar per year feeding them, he never knew a stranger as he would hand out candy to everyone he saw thus earning him the name “Candyman.” His family affectionately called him “Papa Bear,” “PopPops” and “PaPa Tom.” He was a loving father, husband and grandfather who cherished the time spent with them and his adopted cat “Bogey.”

Preceded in death by two brothers, Hobert and Charles Akers.

Those remaining to celebrate his life include his wife of 21 years, Phyllis W. Akers of Pine Hill; son, Thomas A. “Tom” Akers II and wife Kathy of Rocky Mount, N.C.; daughter, Donna L.
