Dorothy Mae Adams, of Kentucky, formerly of Powellton, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan 1, 2013.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3100 Tates Creek Rd., Lexington, with Dr. Walter Price officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, at Milward-Man O’ War, 1509 Trent Blvd. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. on Monday at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Grover C. Gunther Aliff Jr.

Grover C. Gunther Aliff Jr., 67, of Beaver, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2012.

Little did we know that morning that God would call your name.

In life we loved you dearly. In death we do the same, it broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide and though we cannot see you, you will always be on our side, our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one our chain will link again.

Mr. Aliff was born the son of the late Macie Gunther and was born at Mt. Tabor where he spent most of his childhood.

Grover was also preceded in death by two sisters, Arlene B. DeHart and Caroline M. Sturgill, a brother, Clyde E. Gunther, a niece, Tammy DeHart and a nephew Joseph Gunther.

Those left to cherish his memory are Robert and Christine DeHart with which he made his home with for the past 25 years; several very special nieces and nephews, Robert Gunther of Beckley, Charles Gunter and wife Lena of Beckley, Wanda Kay Wood of Beckley, A. J. DeHart of Beaver, Anthony Scott of Beaver, Kathy Asbury and husband Timmy of Midway, Sharron Wheeler and husband Stephen of Beckley, Amanda Lilly and husband Josh of Lester, James Wheeler and wife Desiree of Lester, Cathy Wilson and husband Tim of Virginia, Ariel Ellis and husband Andrew of Virginia, Miranda Rollyson Kamensky and husband Patrick, Brenda Hunter Greene and husband James of Beckley; as well as many other family and friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Michael Knotts officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Timmy Asbury, Joshua Lilly, James Wheeler, Patrick Kamensky and James Greene.

Nazha Ammar

CHARLESTON — Nazha Ammar, 91, of Charleston, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at the Raleigh Center in Daniels, W.Va.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Syria, a daughter of the Alex and Sadie Ammar. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ammar, brother Shafeek Ammar and special sister in law Radine Ammar Queen.

She is survived by her daughters, Lana (Randy) Hay of Sissonville, and Nancy (Howard) Brown of Beckley. Grandchildren, Tammy, Jonathan and Natalie Ann. Great Grandchildren,  Gregory, Allison, Benjamin, Jacob and Amber; and one sister, Jaqueline Hill.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the St. George Orthodox Church,  with the Very Rev. Father Olof H. Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the St. George Orthodox Church in Charleston.

WHITMAN — Lettie Chafin Brescoach, 79, a native of Holden, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

Gary Dean Cook, 62, of Midway, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012.

Born May 18, 1950, he was a son of Bertie Lillian Cook and his step-father, Carlos Lilly.

Gary enjoyed fishing, working on motorcycles and lawnmowers. He was employed as an auto mechanic and was of the Baptist faith.

Lakey Halsey

SAULSVILLE — Lakey Halsey, age 100, of Saulsville,  passed away Monday, Dec.  31, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Rhoda Bradbury Cline of Skin Fork.

She was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading the Bible, listening to gospel music and quilting.

Lakey was one of the original founding members of the Sweet Home Baptist at Maben.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George and her children, Willadean, Gerald and Roger.

She is survived by her children, Alycia Stegall and her husband, Tom of Pontotoc, Miss., Lynell Daniels and her husband, Tommy of Pineville, and Robert Halsey and his wife, Pam of Richmond, Va.; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A special mention goes to Nikki Daniels, who sat tirelessly by her bedside and encouraged her to tell stories about her youth, as “Mamaw” was a living history book, and Lana Blankenship, a very special caregiver who was loved very much by Lakey.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Evan Arkell officiating. Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Victor  L. Hartnett

BIRCH RIVER — Victor L. Hartnett, 87, of Birch River, Nicholas County, W.Va., passed away in his sleep on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, after a short illness.  

Victor was born in Moravia, N.Y., on April 17, 1925 and grew up on a farm overlooking the Finger Lakes. He was the son of the late Howard W. Hartnett, a farmer, and Nellie Forrest Hartnett, a school teacher. He had four siblings: the late Dr. Bernard Hartnett, Donald Hartnett, Delores Hartnett Pope, and Coral Hartnett, all of upstate New York.

Victor was a WWII veteran, who served in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and provided for his family by working as an electrician in many states and in Greenland.

Vic had four biological children with his first wife, the late Helen Audrey Hobson Hartnett.  He was preceded in death by three sons; Victor Dou, Mark Steven, and Keith Thomas, and is survived by his daughter Vickie Hartnett Dinse, who currently resides in Buffalo, New York.

 In 1970, Vic married the late Jane C. Lindenthal and added six step-children to his family: David, George, Agnes Lindenthal Casto, William, Donald, and the late James Lindenthal.  

In addition to his 10 biological and step-children Vic is called grandpa by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He and his family moved to Braxton County, W.Va., in 1976 and then to their much loved farm on Anthony Creek, Birch River, in 1980.  Disabled in 1984, due to a well fought battle with Esophageal Cancer, he enjoyed working and maintaining the farm and running his bulldozer.

He will be missed by family and friends and remembered as an honest, hardworking, gentle man who lived a life of integrity and dignity. His body has been gifted to the WVU Human Gift Registry.

Edna Lucille Kidwell

Edna Lucille Kidwell, age 86, of Beckley, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on April 15, 1926, at Raleigh, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Forest Noel and Lena Fritz Noel.

Mrs. Kidwell was a retired self employed beautician and was a member of the Glen Morgan Missionary Baptist Church. She had made her home at Glen Morgan, W.Va., for many years.

Mrs. Kidwell was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie R. Kidwell, and by brothers,  Henry and Thomas Noel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include her son, Clifton Lee Kidwell and his wife Vickie of Glen Morgan; two  grandchildren, Noel and Jeffrey Kidwell, and one great granddaughter, Savannah Kidwell.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Edna Noel Kidwell on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.

Beverly Ann Lowry

HILLDALE — Beverly Ann Lowry, 70, of Hilldale, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, following a short illness.

Born August 4, 1942 in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Eugene F. and Margaret S. Lilly Neff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dean Lowry Jr. in October 1998.

Ann was as former clerk for the C&O Railway Company in Hinton. She retired as Secretary for the UMWA Retirement Funds in Beckley. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church at Hilldale.

Survivors include two sons, Tad Lowry and wife Sonya of Tincon, Ga. and Steve Lowry of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter Tamara Nelson and husband Timothy of Ballengee; one brother, Jerry Neff and wife Peggy of Toledo, Ohio; one sister, Barbara Canterbury of Hinton; three grandchildren, Ann Marie Rose, Lara Huffman and Reagan Lowry; four great grandchildren, Landyn Huffman, Ashton Rose, Dalton Huffman an Avyn Margaret Rose.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton, with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery at Ballengee.

Edith Elzoria Dancy Lusk

OCEANA — Edith Elzoria Dancy Lusk, 66, of Oceana, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2012, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

She was born January 15, 1946 in Jesse, W.Va., a daughter of the late Roby and Laura Cook Dancy.

She was a member of the Lacoma Baptist Church and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents her step father Denver Canterbury also preceded her in death along with seven brothers Jimmy, Ken, Willie, Barney, Edgar, Spurgeon and Lonnie Dancy and a sister Olie Stanislaw.

Edith formerly worked at the Oceana Island Creek Company Store in many capacities including Assistant Manager of the grocery department.

Those left to cherish her memories include her loving husband of 41 years Lonnie Lewis Lusk; two daughters Rebecca Susan Moore of Oceana and Sandra (Mackie) Canada of Pineville; two sons Jerry Lusk of Pineville and Ricky Lusk of Ocala, Fla.; her parents who raised her Dallas and Leo Maynard; five grandchildren Nina Lusk, Sheena Chambers, Kevin Brent Morgan, Jamie Lusk and Jackson Moore; two great grandchildren Chandler Lusk and Peyton Chambers; two sisters Susan (Gregg) Sluss of Kopperston, and Rebecca Lynn (Terry) Daniels of Matheny; three brothers Connie (Katrina) Dancy of Jesse, Frankie (Mary) Canterbury of Lynco and Michael Canterbury of Lynco; former daughter-in-law Iveth McKinney of Pineville; lifelong friend Anna Mae Lester of Clear Fork, WV; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron Harvey officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Kopperston Community Cemetery, Kopperston.

Austin L. McMillion Sr.

HURRICANE — Austin L. McMillion Sr. of Hurricane, formerly of Clintonville, went to be with his Lord while surrounded by his family on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston, following a short illness.

Born Saturday October 9, 1943, at Esty, W.Va. He was the son of the late L. D. and Nina Lowe McMillion and the grandson of the late Ester McMillion.

He was preceded in death by his Father-in-Law (Dad) Marvin Osborne in 1994.

Austin was a member of the James Chapel United Methodist Church in Clintonville. He was a licensed Master Electrician working over 45 years in the coal mining industry as electrician, chief electrician and maintenance foreman in Greenbrier, Raleigh and Boone Counties. He retired in May 2012. He loved spending time with his family, working in his vegetable and flower gardens, and taking care of his fruit trees and shrubbery. He also loved to fish and hunt, and he enjoyed watching baseball, football, and NASCAR.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 50 years, Karen Sue (Osborne) McMillion; son, Austin, Jr. and his wife Julie of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Christi Black of Barboursville, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Ethan Black of Barboursville and Olivia McMillion of Morgantown; Mother-in-Law Zelma Osborne (Mom) of White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center; many friends and family pets.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 5, 2013, from 11 a.m. to  1 p.m. at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Jay Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville.

James H. Miller

On Monday, New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31st, 2012, our most cherished, James Hubert Miller,  of Mankin Avenue, Beckley, died at 6:30 a.m., following a long illness, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. He was in his 89th year.

Born November 16, 1923, at Orchard, Monroe County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Opha Everette and Tressa Miller, also of Beckley.

Mr. Miller was Business Manager of Beckley Medical Arts Clinic from its inception in 1954 to his retirement in 1989. He attended Bowling Green College in Bowling Green, Ky.  and proudly served in the US Army Infantry in World War II during campaigns in New Guinea and The Philippines where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was an active member of Beckley Regular Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School Teacher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Kelly Thompson.

James leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 67 years, Frances Bostick Miller of Beckley; he was the dear father of sons, James Terry Miller, and his wife, Donna of Daniels and David Lewis Miller of Beckley; the fond “Grandpa” of Bryan Miller of Huntersville, N.C. and Jeff Miller and his wife Tiffany of Beckley, and the proud great grandfather Clara Emerson Miller of Beckley.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 4th at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel.  Pastor Steven Beverly will be officiating. James will be laid to rest in the Hurt Trail Cemetery within the Blue Ridge Gardens at Prosperity.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour.

FAYETTEVILLE — Darlene Denise Sumpter, 44, of Fayetteville, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown, W.Va., after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Born January 26, 1968, the daughter of Dennis Davis and Sandra (Jones) Davis.

Darlene graduated in the Class of 1986 from Oak Hill High School. In 2009, she joined the Mossy Living Word Church. She enjoyed driving a school bus for Fayette County Board of Education and her favorite pass-time was taking pictures, bear hunting, fishing, and Sunday drives. She looked forward to attending her family reunion each year.

She was preceded in death by her father Dennis Davis, brother David Duncan Jr., and uncle Jimmy Jones.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband Daniel Lee Sumpter, two children Daniel Lee Jackson Jr. and wife Megan of Mossy, Brittney Nicole Menei and husband Nicholas of Bradley; brothers and sisters, Dwayne Baber of Minden, Curtis Baber of Rock Lick, Christine Lawhorn of Rock Lick, Daniel Duncan of Rock Lick; and her mother Sandra (Jones) Davis and her companion David Duncan Sr.

She is also survived by uncle Pete Jones of North Carolina; special uncle Johnny Jones and his wife Sandy of North Carolina, special aunt Betty Blosser of Ohio, aunt Dorothy Jones of Dempsey, W.Va.; father-in-law Eddie Higginbotham and Nancy, mother-in-law Vivian Gilkeson and Butch of Rainelle; her only sister-in-law Sue Higginbotham of Lester; two grandchildren Izabella and Layla; nieces and nephews Carrie, Joseph, Angel, Brianna, Tianna, Candace, C.J., Mallory, Dwayne, Josh, and Jerry; and one great niece Alonna. Darlene was awaiting the arrival of her next grandchild in August 2013.

Her remains rest at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main Street, Oak Hill, WV 25901, where the funeral service will be held 12 noon Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, with Pastor Paul Basham officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Jackson, Curtis Baber, Daniel Duncan, Nico Menei, Leo Lawhorn, and Bob Johnson.

Marsha S. Hannah Thompson

PINEVILLE — Marsha S. Hannah Thompson, 51, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at her home.

Born October 27, 1961 in Bluefield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Statt and Jean Fertig Hannah.

Marsha was a 1979 graduate of Oceana High School. She attained an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Concord College. She was a former employee of Buddy’s Discount and had been employed for the last twelve years with Calfee Funeral Service in Pineville. She was also a long time employee of C.M.J.R. Delivery Service.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Chelsea Thompson and her companion, Billy Roberts of Pineville; Wade Huffman of Surveyor, her companion of five years, who loved her dearly; and her cat, Luna.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Doc Adkins officiating. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may gather with the family 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be members of the Pineville Fire Department, of which her daughter, Chelsea is a member.

VERDUNVILLE — Odell Vance, 70, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Maryetta United Baptist Church, Verdunville, with Pastor Lonnie Gore Jr. and the Rev. Otto Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill.

Harry O. Woods Jr.

HINTON — Harry O. Woods Jr., 77, of Mark Meador Road, Hinton, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at his home following a long illness.

Born February 20, 1935 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry O. Woods Sr. and Ada Courtright Woods.

Harry proudly served our Country in the U.S. Army retiring with 24 years of service. During this time he received awards for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity including Good Conduct Awards along with numerous other commendations throughout his military career.

Woody loved his family and his friends whom he considered his extended family. His special passion was anything to do with old cars and trucks especially cadillacs which earned him the name “The Cadillac Man”.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Farley and Mary Frisbey, one brother, Robert Woods and also his late wife.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janet Rush Woods, his step-son, Edgar Rush and wife Barbara of Hinton, step grandson, Joseph Rush, of Midway, brother-in-law Donald Reed and special friend Sandra Via, and nephew Patrick Reed of Hinton. Harry is also survived by his sisters Betty Zeitler of Hawthorn, Calif., Sonya Econ and husband Joseph of Little Rock, Calif., Jean Messer of Columbus and Ann Woods of Youngstown, Ohio, his brother James Woods of Columbus Ohio, a sister-in-law Elfriede Woods of Columbus, Ohio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be Friday, January 4, 2013, at 12 p.m. at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors, with Pastor Robbie Merritt and Dr. Roy Carter officiating.   Burial will follow in the Reed Family Cemetery on Madams Creek with Graveside Military Honors.
