Lawrence D. Allen, 74, of Irish Mountain Road, near Shady Spring, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

SUMMERSVILLE — Chessie Agnes Beaver, 91, of Summersville, passed away Sunday,  Dec. 30, 2012.

HINTON — Solon Brady “Jimmy” Briggs, 81, of 495 Stokes Drive, Hinton, died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

Bob Carroll

RUPERT — Bob Carroll, 76, of Rupert, formerly of Quinwood, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at home following a long illness.

Born June 4, 1936, in Quinwood, he was a son of the late Walter Edward “Toots” Carroll and the late Thelma Ann Rutherford Carroll.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Shirley Ann Carroll, and an infant daughter, Barbara Jane.

Bob was a retired coal miner having worked for Westmoreland Coal Co., a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the U.M.W.A., a horse lover, a lung transplant survivor, and a cancer survivor. Many remember him for his C.B. Radio handle as “Straight Pin.”

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Carroll; a daughter, Debbie Walkup and husband, Ron, of Hines; a son, John Carroll of Lewisburg; a special “son,” Jeff Thomas and his wife, Lorrie, of Crawley; a sister, Helen “Sis” Dudley of Covington, Va.; two brothers, Charles “Chuck” Carroll and wife, Evelyn, of Quinwood, and Earl “Buddy” Carroll and wife, Lana, of Covington; and a granddaughter, Jessica Ann Walkup.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan 4, at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, prior to the graveside service.

Annabelle Lee Chapman

ANSTED — Annabelle Lee Chapman, 93, of Ansted, passed away Monday, December 31, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a long illness

Annabelle was born March 14, 1919, at Rowan, W.Va.; she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Martha Jane Ellis Wood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jennings Porter Chapman; a sister, Sarah K. Legg; two brothers, Edwin Wood and Clyde Wood.

She was a member of Victor United Methodist Church of Victor and a homemaker.

Survivors are a son and his wife, Brian and Robin Chapman of Ansted; grandchildren, Christopher Porter Chapman of Victor and Jessica Robin Chapman of Ansted; great-grandchildren, Tyler Zickafoose and Cassidy Chapman.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted, with Pastor Pat Grey officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

PEMBERTON — James William Furrow, 55, of Pemberton, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012.

Clarence Olen Gwinn

MEADOW BRIDGE — Clarence Olen Gwinn, 83, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Monday, December 31, 2012, in the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, following a short illness.

Born December 5, 1929, at Meadow Bridge, he was the son of the late Lake and Esta Gwinn.

Olen was a member of U.M.W.A., a member of Rainelle Moose Lodge 1647 and a member of the Lane United Methodist Church. Olen was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife, Deloris “Ducky” Crane Gwinn; a son, L.L. Gwinn and wife Antonette of Beckley; a daughter, Shelia Ames and husband Doug of Cortland, Ohio; two  sisters, Vergia Callison of San Jose, Calif., and Gracie Dotson of Mansfield, Ohio; four  grandchildren, DeeDee Gwinn of Durham, N.C., Taylor Gwinn of Beckley, Melissa Dailey and husband Tom of Deerfield, Ohio, and Michael Ames and wife Melissa of Warren, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Tommy and Tyler Dailey and Jackson Ames; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Roger Booth officiating. Entombment will follow in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum at Clintonville.

Thomas Jackson Jones

Thomas Jackson Jones, age 74, of Shady Spring, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2012, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on November 19, 1938, in Beckley, he was the son of the late John Jones and Katherine Elliott Jones.

Mr. Jones was a retired tractor-trailer driver, and was a member of the White Oak Missionary Baptist Church. He had made his home at Shady Spring for the past ten years. Mr. Jones enjoyed singing in church.

Two brothers, Bill Jones and Johnny Jones, preceded in death, and two sisters, Evelyn Jones and Margaret Farley, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Jones was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife Virginia Taylor Jones. Four children, Frederick Jones and his wife Christine of Wisconsin, Rita Kay Frederick and her husband Mark of Wisconsin, Stewart Jones and his wife Debra of Wisconsin, and Jennifer Yellen and her husband Mark of Seattle, Washington; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be held at the White Oak Missionary Baptist Church at a later date.

Wilma R. Thompson Jones

Our beautiful wife and mother, Wilma R. Thompson Jones, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012, after a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s, at home with her family by her side.

Born August 8, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Oka Meador Thompson.

Wilma loved crossword puzzles, collecting stamps and knives. She made friends everywhere she went. Wilma was a 1953 graduate of Stoco High School. She was employed with the UMWA office for 10 years and the Coal City Post Office for 30 years.

In addition to her parents, Wilma is preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Farley and her husband Donald Farley; son-in-law, David Hicks; and two infant sons.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Eddie Jones Sr. of Coal City; son, Eddie Jones Jr. of Edgewater, Md.; daughter, Drema Hicks and companion Basil Vandall of Coal City; brother, Darrell Thompson and wife Kathleen of Spanishburg; sister, Erma Allen of Glade Springs; her stepmother, Elsie Thompson of Coal City; grandchildren, Brandon RW. Jones of Edgewater, Md., Jennifer Rhines and husband Brad of Elkridge, Md.; great-grandchildren, Kallie, Patience, Felicity, and Grayson.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Rev. Norman Gray officiating.

Friends may gather with the family Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred Deloris Lacy

Mildred Deloris Lacy, 88, of Midway died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 30, 2012.

She was nicknamed “Dodo” by her father in childhood and was known as “Dodo” all her life. She was born in Kanawha County on June 7, 1924, and spent her early years in Belle, East Bank, and Montgomery, W.Va. Montgomery is where she met a star athlete at WV Tech, Jesse Lacy. They were married for over 60 years.

Dodo was a member of the Sophia United Methodist Church. In her younger years she was active in United Methodist Women as well as keeping busy in the church kitchen and other activities of the church. Jess and Dodo worked together at Sophia High School where he was a teacher and coach and she was a secretary. They were active in the Midway community, he as a Boy Scout leader and she as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader; they played a major role in building the Scout Cabin/Community Building in Midway and in keeping it available for community use for years. Dodo was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club, and very active as a volunteer/homeroom mother at Midway Elementary.

She was preceded in death by her father, C.A. Foster, her mother Mildred Amelia (Bea) Foster Goodman, her mother’s second husband, Estle Goodman of Crab Orchard, her brother C.A. Foster Jr., and her sister Lorene Frances (Sally) Battaglio, as well as her husband Jess Lacy.

Dodo is survived by her sons, Neal and wife Helen of Beckley, and Danny and wife Jan of Crab Orchard, granddaughters, Angela Kauffman (Kevin) of Morgantown, Leigh Ann Wyco (Jeff) of Indian Trail, N.C., Lisa Mills of Crab Orchard, and grandson Michael Lacy of Crab Orchard, great-grandchildren Jonah and Kaleb Mills, Andrew and Nathan Wyco, Mackenzie and Mikey Lacy, and Tay Kauffman. She will also be missed by nieces Peggy Grubb of Farley Hill, Margie Kamakani of Oregon, Patty Battaglio of Pennsylvania, and Joyce Payne of Georgia.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, from 12 to 2 p.m., with a celebration of her life beginning at 2 p.m., at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Dr. Robert Stoddard, Pastor Ernie Jarrell and Pastor David Rumberg officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Following the services she will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

We would also like to extend a special “thank you” to Dr. Golden and the many people who helped us from Hospice; you were a special blessing to our family.

William Carol ‘Gabby’ Lane

William Carol “Gabby” Lane, 76, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012, in a local care facility following a long illness.

Born February 10, 1936, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Robert and Elsie Fox Lane.

Carol worked for Kirby Lumber Company of Layland, and Brooks Mining in Clifftop. Carol loved gospel music and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the West Virginia State Gospel Song Convention in Mt. Nebo.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Karen Miller and her husband Eddie of Beckley, his son, Bill Lane and wife Martha of Russellville; five grandchildren, Scott Miller and his wife Meredith of Spartanburg, S.C., Amanda Moore and husband Steve of Oak Hill, Daniel Asbury, Joanna Asbury, and Tanner Carte; two great-grandchildren Hayden Moore, Brody Miller, and his sister Robin Canaday of Beckley; a special cousin Patty Angle of Forest Hill, and a host of nieces and nephews and beloved friends.

Services celebrating Carol’s life will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with the Pastor Fred Lovell, and his grandson Rev. Scott Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Louise Viola Paris Lester

Mrs. Louise Viola Paris Lester, 59, of Beckley, died Friday, December 28, 2012, at Beckley Appalachian Hospital Beckley, after a long illness.

Born May 1, 1953, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Turner William Paris Sr. and Dorothy Jane Davis.

Louise worked as an independent Mary Kay Consultant, at Ames, and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish her precious memories are her husband of 25 years, Bland Lester Sr.; daughters: Veronica (Torrence) Casey of North Carolina; Rachel Valentine of West Virginia; and Tanesha Smith ( Marcus) of North Carolina; her two stepchildren: Jill Lester of North Carolina; and Bland Lester Jr. of West Virginia; three sisters, Billy (Alfred) Taylor of Beckley, Antoinette (Ernest) Gray of Ohio and Carla (Steve) Carson of Beckley; two brothers, Turner Paris Jr. (Charlotte) of West Virginia and Dennis Goodson of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley, with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Hazel Ellison Mann

UNION — Mrs. Hazel Ellison Mann, 93, of Union, passed away on December 28, 2012, at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, following an extended illness.

She was born June 23, 1919, in Union, a daughter of the late Senator H.S. and Nannie Blanton Ellison.

Mrs. Mann was schooled in Union and graduated from Roanoke Business College, Roanoke, Va., and later joined the staff at the Bank of Monroe.

She was preceded in death by one brother, H.S. “Jack” Ellison Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph Mann of Union; one son, Ralph E. “Skip” Mann and wife Jane of Pickaway, W.Va.; one daughter, Margaret M. Theissen and husband Paul of Grainau, Germany; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2013, at the Union Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Nancy Bulla officiating.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Union Rescue Squad, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Salvation Army.

Robert L. Saunders

LEWISBURG — Robert L. Saunders, 80, of Lewisburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte, after a short illness.

Born May 5, 1932, in Covington, Va., he was the son of the late Daisy Saunders.

Bob graduated from Alderson High School in 1950 and served in Korea in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Alderson.

He was an active member of Lewisburg Baptist Church where he and Janet had the Jolly Seniors for over 18 years. He was also a member of the Senior Circle at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where he served as President of the Board.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Saunders, and stepson, Bobby Cohernour.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Lewisburg Baptist Church with Pastor Jonathan Comer officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery at Lewisburg.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Lewisburg Baptist Church.

Dorothea Lucille McGinnis Slates

OAK HILL — Dorothea Lucille McGinnis Slates, 84, of Oak Hill, passed away on Sunday,  December 30, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Lucille was born on June 25, 1928, in Parkersburg, W.Va., to the late Herbert P. and Mary Ellen Riddle McGinnis.

Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 62 years, the Rev. William Dean Slates of Oak Hill, and children Janet Slates Bowland and husband Greg of Oak Hill, and sons John Slates of Amarillo, Texas, and Philip Slates and wife Debra of Morgantown, W.Va. Lucille was very proud of her four grandsons Dr. Adam Bowland of Monroeville, Pa., and Alex, Ben and Matthew Slates of Morgantown. Surviving nieces and nephews include Bonnie Uhl of Cincinnati, Ohio, Linda Uhl Tirk of Cleveland, Ohio, and James and Steve McGinnis of Parkersburg, W.Va.

Lucille was a 1946 graduate of Parkersburg High School and received a B.A. in Spanish and education from WV University in 1950. She was Spanish, English and substitute teacher in Weirton, Bramwell and Greenbrier East High School and for Fayette County Schools. She was a dedicated United Methodist Pastor’s wife serving churches in Fort Ashby, Hurricane, Bluefield, Oak Hill, Lewisburg and Morgantown. She was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church and served nine years on the board of the United Methodist Women of the WV Annual Conference. She loved to travel and she and Bill made many trips to Europe and Africa and every state in the U.S. Throughout her lifetime she served as a Sunday and Bible school teacher and she enjoyed birding, gardening and doing crossword puzzles. In 1990 the couple retired to Oak Hill. She enjoyed her time as a volunteer at the New River Gorge Convention & Visitors Center in Oak Hill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Helen McGinnis Uhl of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jeannette McGinnis of Parkersburg and Leonard and Howard McGinnis of Parkersburg.

For the many years Lucille fought the brave battle of Alzheimer’s disease. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 1 p.m., at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Donations in her memory can be made to the Oak Hill United Methodist Church Food Pantry or to Bowers Hospice House.

Margaret Nell Justice Smith, 93, of Beckley, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Sweeneysburg, with Pastor Gary Williams officiating. Burial will be at Davis Cemetery, Mount Tabor. Mamie Marie Workman Suttle

Mamie Marie Workman Suttle, 87, of Clear Creek, died on Sunday, December 30, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born October 5, 1925, at Clear Creek, she was the daughter of the late Prater and Tellie Toney Workman.

Mrs. Suttle was of the Methodist faith and a homemaker.

Her husband, Cecil Asbury Suttle, a son, Paul Scarbro, three sisters, Mary Hellem, Madeline Griffin and Jewell Meadows, and three brothers, Kenneth Workman, Cleve Workman and Carlos Workman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son, Cleeroy Scarbro of Clear Creek, daughter, Patricia Cooper and husband, Starlin, of Bolt, stepdaughter, Brenda Johnson and husband, Jack, of Ohio, daughter-in-law, Joyce Scarbro of Clear Creek, and two sisters, Joan Blevins of Clear Creek and Halline Thompson of Sylvester.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope with Rev. Loretta Taylor and Rev. Carl Sellards officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Thomas Ray ‘Fudzy’ Underwood

Thomas Ray “Fudzy” Underwood, 59, of Dry Creek, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, with the Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial will follow in the Brown Family Cemetery, Dry Creek. Friends may call two hours before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Willard E. Wright

Willard E. Wright, 79, of Beckley, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012, at Heartland following a short illness.

Born September 15, 1933, in Ophir, Ky., he was the son of the late Sank and Lina Wright.

Willard was a graduate of Man High School, served our country in the U.S. Air Force, worked 38 years in the mining industry retiring from Pittston’s Buffalo Mining, and was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid hunter, had a great knowledge of firearms and was a proud member of the National Rifle Association.

Willard deeply loved his family and was a mentor, not only to his family, but to those around him. He was always willing to pass along his vast knowledge of mining, hunting, horses and guns.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Francis, Italy, Mag, and Letha; brothers, Sankie and William E.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Loretta Hill Wright of Beckley; his precious daughter, Rhonda Wright Caron and husband, Mike, of Bolt; grandchildren, Shane Caron and wife Desiree of Fairdale, Sheena Caron and partner Jennifer Sloan of Beckley, Steven and Savanna Caron of Bolt; great-grandchildren, Makiya and Colten Caron of Fairdale; also his beloved dog, Sara.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Pastor Dewey Lowe officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
