Charley ‘C.H.’ Hampton Atha Jr.

The Lord has gained another saint as Charley (C.H.) Hampton Atha, Jr., was received into heaven on December 26, 2012, at Plateau Medical Center at Oak Hill, WV. Born July 4, 1953, at Welch, WV, he was the son of Charley H. Atha, Sr., and Sclean Atha. C.H. was a 1972 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill and served in the Army Reserves and WV National Guard. In his younger years, C.H. served as the music director, Sunday School superintendent, church council member, and served God in many other capacities at Central Avenue Church of God and Mountain View Church of God. He was president of the Oak Hill High School Band Boosters for three years during the 1990s, and was currently vice president of the Oak Hill Business and Professionals Association. C.H. had a deep love for his family’s business, Fayette Awning and Glass, which was founded by him, his father, and mother, and was living out a lifelong dream of operating the family business. His wife and children will carry on this legacy.

C.H. was a very proud dad and poppie. Although he had rheumatoid arthritis as well as polycystic kidney disease and was disabled at a young age, he was able to live life to the fullest and see both of his children grown to be successful adults with children of their own. His four grandchildren were the joy of his life and he never passed up an opportunity to do anything in his power to make them happy. He was always excited to hear the patter of little feet in his home.

Preceding him in death are his sister, Deborah Lynn James, maternal grandparents Otis and Nell Blackburn, paternal grandparents Herbert and Muriel Atha, mother and father-in-law Bradford and Dainty Smith, and his beloved yellow lab, Lady.

In addition to his parents, C.H. Atha, Jr., is survived by his wife of 37 years, Deborah Smith Atha, his daughter Kristi Atha-Rader and husband Kris of Fayetteville, his son Charley (Chip) Hampton Atha III and wife Candice of Cleveland, TN, grandchildren Charley and Caitlyn Atha and Madison and Brock Rader, brothers and sisters-in-law Larry James and Rev. Ray and Carolyn Hurt, nieces and nephews Tiffany James, Jonathan and Amy Hurt, JB and Dana Hurt, and Amanda Hurt. C.H. also leaves behind many other close friends and family members.

“I will press on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14” If there were ever a person who pressed on and praised God despite his physical disabilities, it was C.H. He overcame so many obstacles and when you thought it was physically impossible for him to accomplish something, he found a way to do it. Always with a smile and never wanting pity from anyone. Today he has received his eternal reward. Over the past few weeks, C.H. had become increasingly concerned about the condition of the economy and the hopelessness he sensed in so many people. He expressed to his friends and co-workers that as long as there is Jesus there is hope in this world.

His remains rest at the Mountain View Church of God at Hilltop where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (today) and where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Rudell Bloomfield and Rev. Mike Kees officiating.

Pallbearers will be his friends and employees of Fayette Awning and Glass, Robert Long, Mike Kees, Mike Hitchcock, Jeff Ashwell, Larry Taylor, and Jeff Owen.

C.H. will be laid to rest at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Oak Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a scholarship in his memory at the Mountain View Christian School, Post Office Box 1246, Oak Hill, WV 25901-1246. Please designate contributions to the C.H. Atha Memorial Fund.
