Cora Mescal Murphy Adkins

Cora Mescal Murphy Adkins, 91, of Coal City, passed away at home with her caregiver Fred Nady whom she loved and he loved her.

Born June 22, 1921, at Allen Junction, she was a daughter of the late David Joseph Grubb and the late Janie Thompson Grubb.

Cora loved sewing, cooking, collecting dolls and her pets. She was a cook at Pinecrest Hospital, a cashier at the Mtn. Market, LB Market, Bypass Market, and Murphy’s Grocery.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Murphy; brothers, Wesley Thompson, John, Virgil, Garland, Jack, Chester, Joseph, and Frank Grubb; sisters, Wanda, June, Hester, and Ruth; and 6 stepbrothers and sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Randall Murphy and wife, Ulane, of Coal City, Della Murphy of Coal City, Patricia Harris of Coal City, and Richard Murphy and wife, Karen, of Georgetown, KY; sister, Thelma Gladine Mitchem of East Bend, NC; grandchildren, Curtis Hylton, Debbie McGraw, Randall Murphy, II, and wife, Debbie, Eric Hawkins and wife, Amanda, Asa Harris, and Ben Murphy; great-grandchildren, Randall Murphy, III, and wife, Jackie; great-great-grandchildren, Joseph and Easton.

Services to celebrate the life of Cora Mescal Murphy Adkins will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Pastor Melvin Jamison officiating. Following the services Cora will be laid to rest at Farley Hill Cemetery.

Friends may gather with the family from 12 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.

Mary Catherine ‘Kitty’ Roach Brenemen

SCARBRO — Mary Catherine “Kitty” Roach Brenemen, 75, of Scarbro, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Dr. Larry Halsey and Pastor Matt Hill officiating. CRAIGSVILLE — Donald T. Brooks, 72, of Craigsville, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the Cottle Church of God at Cottle with Pastor Virginia Russ officiating. Interment will follow in West Virginia Memorial Gardens at Calvin. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

PINEVILLE — Wanda John Cooper, 95, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012.

A celebration of Wanda’s life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Rockcastle Baptist Church, with the Rev. Evan Arkell and the Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Interment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville.

Ruth Ann Wood Harrah

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Ruth Ann Wood Harrah, 85, of Christiansburg, VA, and formerly of Daniels, WV, entered through the gates of Heaven on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg, VA.

Mrs. Harrah was born on September 2, 1927, in Stotesbury, WV, and resided at Wheatland Hills Retirement Center in Christiansburg, VA.

She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Harrah, her parents, Dennis Wood and Russie Crews Wood, her brother Edsel Crews Wood, and special niece Becky Wood.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Dennis Floyd Wood, II, and Elizabeth Wood of Cary, NC, a sister-in-law Gledis Wood of Beckley, WV, and three nephews, Dennis F. Wood, III, Stephen Edward Wood, and Edsel Carl Wood, special friends Loretta Stewart Grubb, Joseph and Teresa Chapman, and many friends at Wheatland Retirement Center in Christiansburg, VA.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 27, 2012, from 9 until 11 a.m. at Horne Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Horne Funeral Home with Pastor Porter Riner officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Blue Ridge Memory Gardens in Beckley, WV.

Emily Kathryn ‘Katie’ Madison

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Emily Kathryn “Katie” Madison, age 63, of Pickerington, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2012, surrounded by her family.

She was born September 10, 1949, in Beckley, WV, to the late Tracy and Edna Mae (James) Miller.

Katie grew up in Beaver, WV, and was a graduate of Morton High School and Morton College in Cicero, IL. She was a registered nurse. Katie was a member of Reynoldsburg Alliance Church where she shared her musical talents and was a Sunday School Teacher. A humble lady, she made people feel welcome and made them feel special.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Peter C. Madison; son, Matthew James Madison; brother, Ben (Shirley) Miller, and their children Bryan Miller and Cindy (Nick) McCarthy, along with son, Colton; sister, Janie Deibler; cousins and many dear friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Wilbur and Lillian Madison.

Family will receive friends 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2012, at Reynoldsburg Alliance Church, 751 Rosehill Road, Reynoldsburg, OH 43068, where services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.; Pastor John Ennis, officiating; interment Glen Rest Memorial Estate.

Richard Davis ‘Rick’ Mann

HILLDALE — Richard Davis “Rick” Mann, 60, of Hilldale died Friday, December 21, 2012, at Summers County A.R.H. following a short illness.

Born October 17, 1952, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Herndon A. and Zelma Dean Bragg Mann.

Rick was a former employee of Kroger Corporation in Hinton and also a former employee of the Hinton News. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church at Hilldale and also a member of the Hinton Elks Lodge. Rick was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a lifelong resident of Summers County.

Survivors include a son, Jody Mann and wife Pamela of Princeton, and a daughter, Richelle Fritts of Hinton. One brother, Robert Alan Mann and wife Margaret of Germantown, MD. One granddaughter, Deborah Marie Ashley of Princeton, and a great-granddaughter, Genevieve Marie Ashley of Princeton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Rev. Glen Pysell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church Cemetery at Hilldale.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be: Norman Richmond, Eugene Jones, Dale Dillon, Bill Ball, Fred Thompson and Lewis Hodge.

MULLENS — Rebecca Dawn Smith, 41, of Mullens passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Annalee L. Vandall

GREEN SULPHUR SPRINGS — Annalee L. Vandall, 70, of Duncan Branch Road, passed away Friday evening, December 21, 2012, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, West Virginia, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born August 22, 1942, at East Rainelle, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ray C. and Rosalee Martin Cox.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Freddie Lee Vandall in 1996.

Annalee was an active member of Elton Community Church. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

Those left to cherish her memory are 2 daughters: Kendra Vandall Calhoun and husband Bill of Manassas, Virginia, and Lisa Vandall Kerschner of Parkersburg, WV; 3 grandchildren: Jennifer Rookstool, Travis Harless and Candace Harless.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Rev. Clay O’Dell officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Helen Marie Wall

Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Helen Marie Wall, 81, of Crab Orchard, formerly of Helen, went home to be with the Lord on December 22, 2012.

Born September 4, 1931, at Arista, WV, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Allie Brown Swaggerty. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Helen loved BINGO, baking, and loved to work; she was a Ward Clerk at both the Mullens Hospital and Raleigh General Hospital.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bettes Wall; three sons, Harold, Tommy and Bobby Wall; sister, Alice Thomas; five brothers, Junior, Calvert, Ralph, Billy, and Cecil Swaggerty; and six grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, with whom she made her home, Helen Hughes and husband, Denny, of Crab Orchard, daughter, Patty Hughes and husband, Oscar, of Helen, daughter, Carol Cadle and husband, Fred Jr., of Helen, son, Jerry Wall and wife, Shirl, of Bolt, son, Johnny Wall and wife, Shannon, of Lexington, NC, son, Bettes Lee Wall of Oak Hill, son, Raymond Wall and wife, Alice, of Kansas, daughter, Nancy Steverson of Beckley, daughter, Peggy Blankenship of Georgia, and Rhonda Cadle whom she loved like a daughter of Amigo; 37 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and special friends, Freda and Buddy McCall.

Services to celebrate the Life of Helen Marie Wall will be held 1 p.m. Monday, December 24, 2012, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with Brother Oakey Slate officiating. Helen will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family from 12 p.m. until time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
