Martha Simon Dixon
LEWISBURG — Martha Simon Dixon, 102, of Lewisburg passed away Saturday morning, December 22, 2012, at her residence.
Martha was born November 7, 1910, in Fairlea, WV, on the Simon Home property which is now the WV State Fair Parking lot and Spartan Stadium. Martha’s parents were Rudolph Walter and Martha Lipps Simon.
February 8, 1958, she married Arnold Calvin Dixon, who passed away on May 30, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Jane Simon Patterson, Stepson, Daniel W. Dixon; Great-Granddaughter, Tensly Nevaeh, and Great-Grandson Athony V. D’Aurio.
Martha attended the one-room Livesay School for the first eight grades and graduated from Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte in 1929. Martha jointed the Trinity Methodist Church in Ronceverte when she was 16 years old. After moving to Lewisburg in 1966, she became a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, where she served several ways including Treasurer of the United Methodist Women. In 1954 she joined the Farm Woman’s Club (Tri-City CEOS). She was a designated life member and served as President many times. She was also a lifetime member of the Valley Trails Garden Club. When Leggett’s was built in 1951, she began working and continued until 1957.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Annette Dixon Thompson of Fayetteville, NC, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Dixon of Canton, OH, granddaughters, Anna Marie Andrews of Fayetteville, NC, Sharon D’Aurio (Gary) of Canton, OH, Cindy Sterling of Canton, OH; grandsons, Brian D. Thompson of Fayetteville, NC, Steve Dixon (Karen) of N. Canton, OH; eight Great-Grandchildren and three Great-Great-Grandchildren; a nephew Herbert S. Patterson (Carolyn), Great-Nephew Eric S. Patterson and family of Virginia Beach, VA; Great-Niece Elizabeth L. Patterson (Lindsay Markus) of PA, special cousins, Dr. Mary Ann Mann, Dr. Robert Mann (Pam), Mary Alice Young-Beard (Sherman) and special loving caretaker since 2008, Mary Wise.
A celebration service of Martha’s Life will be held at Lewisburg United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2012, with Rev. Joe Kenaston who will conduct the service of song and praise. The family will receive their family and friends from 12 p.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Interment will follow at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.
Pallbearers are friends, William Hinzman, Bill Ott and Hubert Scott; also service will be Eric, Evan and Lance Patterson, great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be given to Lewisburg United Methodist Church, 214 Washington Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
