Mary Catherine ‘Kitty’ Roach Brenemen

SCARBRO — Mary Catherine “Kitty” Roach Brenemen, 75, of Scarbro, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

RENICK — Mrs. Dorothy B. Christian, 88, of Renick died Dec. 21, 2012.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at McCraw Funeral Home in Frankford with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery at Renick.

Charles Ervin Cline

BAISDEN — Charles Ervin Cline, 75, of Baisden, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

Funeral will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbert, with Pastor Clifford Rawls. To honor his wishes he will be cremated. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Eugene Cook

CLEAR FORK — Eugene Cook, 85, departed this life Friday, December 21, 2012.

Born October 8, 1927, he was the son of the late Hugh M. and Martha Toler Cook.

Eugene was a 1945 graduate of Baileysville High School and played for the school’s basketball team. He was also a 1959 graduate of Concord College, with degrees in Physical Education and Social Studies. He was a local and national member of the Beta Sigma and Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternities.

Eugene was an educator for thirty-four years. Throughout that time, he served as a teacher and basketball coach at Reedy Creek, Long Branch, Huff Consolidated, and Baileysville Elementary schools. He had been retired thirty-two years.

He had a love for Blue Grass music and started his own group, The Faithful Few. While he could play almost any instrument, he was an exceptional mandolin player.

He was a member of the Oceana United Methodist Church. He also attended Sun Hill Community Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh Cook, Jr.; a sister, Neva Cook; a sister-in-law, Edith Cook; and a niece, Judy Hamby.

Those left to cherish Eugene’s memory are his wife of sixty-two years, Juanita Cole Cook; a daughter, Lisa Cook Cox and husband, Corky; a special grandson, Zachary Cox, who followed in his grandfather’s footsteps by graduating from Concord University; a niece, Kathryn Toler and husband, Bill, of Kopperston; and two great-nieces, Cindy Blagg, her husband, David, and their daughter, Mary Beth, of FL and Rebecca Hamby of OH. He also leaves behind special friends, Jim, Paulette and Ryan Blankenship of Clear Fork, Hazel Conn of Long Branch, Gary Mitchell of Oceana, Mike Belcher of Oceana, Ray and Mildred Shrewsbury of Stephenson; and Pastor Betty Roach of Oceana.

A celebration of Eugene’s life will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2012, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Melissa White and Rev. Jay Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friends may call Sunday, December 23, 6 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Martha Simon Dixon

LEWISBURG — Martha Simon Dixon, 102, of Lewisburg passed away Saturday morning, December 22, 2012, at her residence.

Martha was born November 7, 1910, in Fairlea, WV, on the Simon Home property which is now the WV State Fair Parking lot and Spartan Stadium. Martha’s parents were Rudolph Walter and Martha Lipps Simon.

February 8, 1958, she married Arnold Calvin Dixon, who passed away on May 30, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Jane Simon Patterson, Stepson, Daniel W. Dixon; Great-Granddaughter, Tensly Nevaeh, and Great-Grandson Athony V. D’Aurio.

Martha attended the one-room Livesay School for the first eight grades and graduated from Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte in 1929. Martha jointed the Trinity Methodist Church in Ronceverte when she was 16 years old. After moving to Lewisburg in 1966, she became a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church, where she served several ways including Treasurer of the United Methodist Women. In 1954 she joined the Farm Woman’s Club (Tri-City CEOS). She was a designated life member and served as President many times. She was also a lifetime member of the Valley Trails Garden Club. When Leggett’s was built in 1951, she began working and continued until 1957.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Annette Dixon Thompson of Fayetteville, NC, daughter-in-law Mary Ann Dixon of Canton, OH, granddaughters, Anna Marie Andrews of Fayetteville, NC, Sharon D’Aurio (Gary) of Canton, OH, Cindy Sterling of Canton, OH; grandsons, Brian D. Thompson of Fayetteville, NC, Steve Dixon (Karen) of N. Canton, OH; eight Great-Grandchildren and three Great-Great-Grandchildren; a nephew Herbert S. Patterson (Carolyn), Great-Nephew Eric S. Patterson and family of Virginia Beach, VA; Great-Niece Elizabeth L. Patterson (Lindsay Markus) of PA, special cousins, Dr. Mary Ann Mann, Dr. Robert Mann (Pam), Mary Alice Young-Beard (Sherman) and special loving caretaker since 2008, Mary Wise.

A celebration service of Martha’s Life will be held at Lewisburg United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2012, with Rev. Joe Kenaston who will conduct the service of song and praise. The family will receive their family and friends from 12 p.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Interment will follow at Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.

Pallbearers are friends, William Hinzman, Bill Ott and Hubert Scott; also service will be Eric, Evan and Lance Patterson, great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be given to Lewisburg United Methodist Church, 214 Washington Street, Lewisburg, WV 24901.

Darrell Wayne Gwinn

Darrell Wayne Gwinn, age 54, of Beckley, WV, passed away at the Charleston Area Medical Center General Division on Thursday, December 20, 2012, following a work-related accident.

Darrell was born on June 8, 1958, in Beckley, and was the son of the late Howard Gwinn and Mildred Phillips Gwinn.

Darrell was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1976, and was employed by Mountain Vending Inc. of Oak Hill as a warehouse manager. He was of the Methodist faith, and enjoyed music, the outdoors, and spending time with his family. Darrell was a kind and tender-hearted person, who loved his family dearly, and would freely give to anyone in need. He was always loyal to his job of 25 years.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his siblings, Gary Gwinn and his wife Melissa of Fairfax, Virginia; Danny G. Gwinn and his wife Brenda of Beckley; Randy Gwinn and his wife Joyce of Beckley; and his twin sister Darlene Blake and her husband Ira of Oak Hill, WV.

5 nieces, Kelli Watson and her husband Michael of Rock Creek, Amber Mann and her husband Jason of Stanaford Road, Beckley, Meryl Gwinn of Fairfax, Virginia, Erin Gwinn of Fairfax, Virginia, Syndi Poland of Washington, DC. Two nephews, Chad Gwinn of Springfield, Virginia, and Nick Gwinn, of Beckley, who often made his home with Darrell. He also was loved by his three great-nieces, Madison, and Baylee Mann, and Kendall Watson.

Several aunts and uncles are also among his survivors.

Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate The Life Of Darrell Gwinn on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Rudell Bloomfield and Minister Jarrod Martin officiating.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Sunday.

DUNMORE — Verlin Lee “Tommy” Kelley, 53, of Dunmore, passed away Friday, Dec. 21,  2012.

A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, with the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Moore Family Cemetery at Frost. There was no visitation.

Brenda Kay Redden

Brenda Kay Redden, age 65, of Beaver, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2012, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.

Born May 31, 1947, in Beckley to the late Ross Webb and Elizabeth Milam.

Brenda enjoyed reading her Bible and spending time with her granddaughters. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a caring friend; she will be sadly missed.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nina Bragg along with her husband Beacher and their daughter Charlotte, Mary Bragg and her husband Aubrey, and Nancy Rhodes; brothers, Dennis, Robert, Bennie and wife Norma and daughter Heather Williams, and Kenny Webb.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, James Redden of Grandview and Jerry Redden and wife Beth of Grandview; brothers, Dave Webb of Raleigh and Jimmy Webb of Beckley; sisters, Faye Redden of Grandview and Sharon Meadows of Beckley; granddaughters, Kayla Nichole Taylor, Anna Beth Redden, and Leila Ann Redden.

In keeping with Brenda’s wishes she was cremated.

A memorial gathering will take place on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Open Door Church in Shady Spring.
