Jay Robert Childress

Jay Robert Childress, 44, of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2014 following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Born on December 31, 1969 in Fernandino Beach, Fla., Jay was the son of Catherine Gunter Childress and the late Joseph C. Childress of Daniels.

Jay attended West Virginia University and later graduated from Marshall University with a degree in accounting. Jay along with his business associate Greg McGraw operate Keyrock Energy, Inc. since 1995 along with many other mining ventures located primarily in southern West Virginia.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 17 years, Nicole Childress and three sons, Jarrett – 14, Chase – 14, and Cooper - 7, brother John Joseph (Joey) Childress and fiancé Janie Painter, of Frisco, Texas; mother and father-in-law Nick and Karen Nipper of Maple Fork, brother-in-law Jason Nipper and his wife Kevan of Morgantown, W.Va., along with his niece Raegan and nephews Ryan and Riggs Nipper, brother-in-law Wayne Nipper and his wife Leilani of Beckley, and a grandmother by marriage who loved him as her own, Louisa “Coots” Mobley of Maple Fork. Close friends include Bob and Christy Meadows, Greg and Shawn McGraw and John Stroud. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many other friends.  

Jay was an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Prosperity. He was also active in school functions associated with Greater Beckley Christian School and loved the friends he made with each. Jay loved to travel, attend concerts and sporting events and play golf with his sons. Most of all Jay loved spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his contagious smile, patient demeanor and positive attitude. #cancersucks

A special thanks is extended to the staff of the Bowers Hospice House along with the many friends and family who have offered support with prayers, cards, visits, and food throughout this journey.

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 10th 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with a service immediately following.

Honorary pallbearers will include Greg McGraw, Jason Nipper, John Stroud, Brian Bowman, Bob Meadows and Mark Gunter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Childress Education Fund care of Chase Bank Main Branch, Beckley, WV or may also be made to Greater Beckley Christian School attention Jim Fritz, P.O. Box 670, Prosperity, WV 25909.
