Roger Adams

MUD FORK — Roger Adams, 72, of Mud Fork passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014.

Katherine Ann Brown

CANTON, Ga. — Ms. Katherine Ann Brown, 59, of Canton, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Embracing Hospice.

Memorial Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ken May officiating.

Kathie or “Kate” was born with an undying thirst for learning in this life became a teacher of spirituality, astrology, free-lance writing, and poetry. Kathie’s multiple musical talents led her to Women of Heart and her sisters in Spirit.

Kathie opened her heart, shared her wisdom and knowledge. Those blessed to know her well were embellished with unconditional selfless love and the promise of a forever friend.

Surrounded by family and friends through her journey of illness, she proved to us all, her strength, tenacity, graciousness while holding faith with a spiritual smile. Kathie’s profound gentleness, compassion and love impacted many, and all who embrace her gift, and more, and will carry it in their hearts.

Kathie, for 25 years worked in Human Relations and the insurance industry, was a free-lance writer for Aquarius magazine, studied Sufi under Adan Sarhan, and many other accomplishments. She joined Women of Heart an Educational and Drum group in 2005, where her voice, drumming and lyrical talent brought harmony and joy to many.

Kathie will be greatly missed by all who supported her through her courageous battled with cancer and life.

Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Brown of Beckley; sisters, Debby (George) Overby of Kennesaw, Ga., Betty (Jack) Elrod of Canton and Valerie Ponder and fiance’, Steve Reagon of Franklinville, N.C.; nieces, Samantha Zappavigna of Canton and Tiffany Lewis of Franklinville, N.C.; nephews, Seth Ponder and Sean Ponder, both of Franklinville, N.C.

SUMMERSVILLE — Troy Shawn Clevenger, 41, of Summersville, passed away April 7, 2014.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014, at the Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Brother Michael Adkins and Brother Leslie Clutter officiating. Interment will be in the Clevenger Family Cemetery, Holcomb.

PINEVILLE — Dick Cook 91 of Pineville, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014.

Services will be Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Saulsville Baptist Church, Saulsville.

Sandy Garwood Copenhaver

Sandy Garwood  Copenhaver, age 100, of Shady Spring, passed away at the Heartland of Beckley Nursing Home on Wednesday, April 9, 2014.

Born on December 24, 1913 at Raders Valley, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Peyton Copenhaver and Loda M. Bryant Copenhaver.

Mr. Copenhaver was a retired tractor trailer truck driver, and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II. He was a resident of Shady Spring for the past 60 years. Mr. Copenhaver loved to hunt, fish, and enjoyed watching golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Susan Copenhaver, a son Dennis Copenhaver, by a grandson Garwood Mason Copenhaver, and by nine brothers and sisters. Mr. Copenhaver was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are his children, Sandra S. Denton and her husband Ralph of Denver, N.C., and Garwood “Butch” Copenhaver of Shady Spring.

Grandchildren, Sonja Johnson of Troutman, N.C., Kevin Basham Sr. of Maryland, Sandy Blake of Shady Spring, Nikki M. Kirk and her husband Isaac of Odd, W.Va. Great grandchildren, Lindsey Souther and Megan Souther, both of Troutman, N.C., and Kevin Basham Jr. of Denver, N.C.

Funeral  services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating.  Burial will follow at the Morningside Cemetery at Renick, W.Va.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Wesley Miles Dahmer

FRANKFORD — Wesley Miles Dahmer, 80 of Frankford, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at home.

Wesley was born on June 24, 1933 in Frankford, to the late Ressie Hess and Maxie Ollie Bryant Dahmer.

He was a self-employed farmer and an Army Veteran.

Other than his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by sisters, Wyonia Dahmer and Beatrice Collins; brothers, Willie and Robert Dahmer.

Survivors include Nephew, David Dahmer and niece Darla Phillips who were his caregivers; other nieces and nephews, Dorothy Loudermilk, Dawne Dahmer, Robin Haynes, Megan Judy and Amanda Rider; great nieces and nephews, Amber, Cali, Gabrielle and Trebor.

Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, with Pastor Ron Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Rosewood Cemetery with Military Rites.

Donald Earl ‘Donnie’ Farley Jr.

Donald Earl  “Donnie” Farley Jr., 58, of Beckley, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at Bowers Hospice House following a short illness.

Born August 27, 1955 in Beckley, he was the son of the late Donald Earl Farley Sr. and Margaret Ann Jones Farley of Beckley.

Donnie worked as an auto mechanic for many years. He was a crew member for a pro stock drag car which he loved very much. He was also an avid racing and CB enthusiast, known by many as “Patches”. 

Survivors include his brother, David Farley and wife Kim of Beckley; sister, Cathy Tygrett of Hurricane, W.Va.; nieces and nephews, Casey and Holley Tygrett of Illinois, Hillary and husband Chris Gore of Virginia, Cameron Farley and wife Farrah of Elkins, Sonni and husband Dale Cox; great nieces and nephews, Landon Cox, Bailey Tygrett, Maddison Cox, Carter Gore, Adalyn Gore, Breckston Farley. Many friends are left to cherish his memory.

Graveside services and burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Oak Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Jeff Perdue officiating.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Norma J. Gilbert

Norma Jean Gilbert, 76, of Covel, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center following a long illness.

Born November 21, 1937 at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Freeman V. and Ora (Hedrick) Thornton.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Covel Missionary Baptist Church, and was a longtime resident of Covel. 

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband, Perry M. Gilbert; one daughter, Carol Yvonne Thompson; and one brother, Nathan Thornton.

Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Joyce Jewell and her husband, Terry of Lahoma, Okla.; four sons, Ricky Gilbert and his wife, Joann of Lewisburg, Jody Gilbert and his wife, Barbara of North Carolina, John Gilbert of Virginia, and Perry V. Gilbert; two sisters, Judy Webb and her husband, Charles and Sue Snyder and her husband, Dale both of Virginia; three brothers, Lindo Thornton and Buddy Thornton and his wife, Shirley both of Virginia and George Thornton of West Virginia; seven grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.  

Services will be 12 noon, Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Eddie Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.

Carole Joan Foster Gravely

Carole Joan Foster Gravely, 72 of Beckley, passed away on the morning of April 8, 2014.

Born December 31, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Mae Creed Foster and Ernest Paul Foster of Prosperity.

Carole was a real estate agent since 1976. She worked for Century 21 First Choice for many years until her retirement. She was also a member of the Beckley Moose Lodge and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1959. Carole was also a very skilled and talented artist. She enjoyed oil painting.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Sherry Foster, Burah Pack, and Tammi Butterworth.

Those left behind to carry on her legacy include her loving husband of 54 years, Mr. Robert Lee Gravely; son, Robert Lee Gravely Jr. and wife Vicky of Beckley; two granddaughters, Stevie and Lindsey Gravely of Beckley; sisters, Betty Warner and husband Ralph, Ginger Jones and husband Larry, all of Beckley, Alice Scarafino and husband Jerry of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, James T. Foster and wife Julia of Wharton, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Roger Butterworth and wife Mary of Beckley; sister-in-law, Kay Hall of Las Vegas, Nev., Linda Hicks of Beckley, and brother-in-law, John Gravely of Beckley.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with Rev. Paul Zutaut officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens also in Prosperity.

Ernest William Hinkle Jr.

Ernest William Hinkle Jr., 74, of Beckley, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Beckley, following a short illness.

He was born on August 11, 2039, in Lillybrook, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his father Ernest (Pete) William Hinkle and mother Lockie Williams Hinkle Alderman.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia (Jenny) Rose Hinkle. Those left to cherish his memory include his children: a daughter Sherry Lynn Hinkle Gregg and her companion Billy McEachern, of Mabscott, W.Va., and a son Robert Allen Hinkle and his companion Bernadette Maminta, of Mossy, W.Va.; two grandsons, Jason Robert Gregg, of Charlotte, N.C., and Adam Michael Gregg, of Beckley.

Ernie was the ultimate sports fan. He loved the Mountain State University Cougars, and was a diehard WVU Mountaineer. Additional sport events that he attended or followed religiously included the Miners baseball game, Cincinnati Reds, and he also played softball at Fitzpatrick Park up until he retired. He coached Beckley Little League. After retirement he volunteered for the MSU men’s basketball program as manager. During this time he received a total of four NAIA championship rings while volunteering for the National Champion Cougars. In addition he also found time to volunteer with the MSU women’s softball and volleyball teams. One of his proudest moments came on September 26, 2004, when Ernie was inducted into the MSU Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame with the Distinguished Friend Award for his loyal volunteer service to Mountain State University.

In addition to sports he loved spending time with his family going out to eat, going to flea markets, picking blueberries at Blueberry Hill and going every year to the West Virginia State Fair.

Ernie was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps from 1958-1962. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson in 1957. He was a retired Master Electrician for 40 years until his retirement on March 31, 2002. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Loyal Order of Moose, and has served as president, secretary, and board member for the Beckley Bowling Association. As a volunteer firefighter, he was a past president of the Mabscott Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014, when we will honor the life of Ernie with a Service of Remembrance at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor William LeGrand will be officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Gregg, Adam Gregg, Thomas Cox, Jim Okes, Ritchie Milam, Micky Bragg, James LeGrand, and TJ Higginbotham.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of the VA Medical Center for their wonderful care and compassion during his time of need. The family would also like to recognize and give special thanks to Bruce Blankenship for all his help and support. Grady Richard Jeffrey Sr.

YADKINVILLE, N.C. —  Grady Richard Jeffrey Sr., 70, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born June 19, 1943 in West Virginia to the late Harry Alonzo Jeffrey and Goldie Ethel Nelson Jeffrey.

He served in the US Army during Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jennings Jeffrey.

Surviving are his wife Betty Jane Slate Jeffrey; children, Gloria (Michael) Underwood, Jack (JoAnn) Wood, Richie (Elisha) Jeffrey; grandchildren Brad, Megan, and Marshall Drew; great grandchildren Rylee and Miley; a sister Lois “Cookie” (Mossy) Miller.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Gentry Family Funeral Service. A graveside will be held at 12 noon on Monday, April 14, 2014, at VA National Cemetery in Salisbury, N.C.

Pearl Elizabeth Holley Lafferty

Our loving mother and grandmother, Pearl  Elizabeth Holley Lafferty, 91, of Oak Hill, died on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the home of her daughter and caregiver, Debra and Jimmy Richmond.

Born November 25, 1922 at Kanawha County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Will and Ocie Grass Holley.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Her husband, Denny Ray Lafferty; daughter, Harstel Gay Dunbar; sons, Denny Ray Lafferty Jr., Mickey Lafferty and Ricky Lafferty; brother, Orbie Holley and sisters, Reba Walton, Helen Ryder Jones and Louise Williams preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Drema Kay Gray  and husband, Richard of Harper and Debra Richmond and husband, Jimmy  of Oak Hill.

Though Pearl cherished and loved each and every one of her family members there were her grandchildren and caregivers, Kimberly and Matthew Gill, Misty and Jeremy Simms,  Ricky Richmond, Sandra and Steve Drennen and LeAnn Drennen all of Oak Hill.  Pearl is survived by her 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Herbert Hatfield officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Charles Thomas Moore

Mr. Charles Thomas Moore, 71, known by most Nannie MO’, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, during a brief stay at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

He leaves to cherish his memories, four daughters; Angela Hickman (Ronald), of Huntsville, Ala., Nanette Moore of Wake Forest, N.C., Kitt Hunter (Edwin) of Warrenville Heights, Ohio and Deshanne Staggers (Russell) of Cleveland, Ohio, three sisters, Shirley Lang (Johnnie), Sandra Gunn and Sharon Moore; two brothers, Robert Smith (Pam), and Terrance Moore; eight grandchildren, two great-grandaughters; nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.

Services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Calhoun Funeral Home, 23000 Rockside Road, Bedford Heights, Ohio 44146. Officiating will be the Rev. Walter Leach of Beckley.

Mr. John Thomas Morehead, 103, of Lester died Thursday, April 10, 2014.

Patricia Ann Morgan

Patricia Ann Morgan, age 54, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at her home.

She was born May 14, 1959, in Lorain, Ohio.  

Patty made her home in Hawthorne, Fla., along with her grandson, Jonathan Minor, whom she greatly enjoyed spending time with.

She is survived by her parents, Thomas F. Greer and Gladys R. Greer of Hawthorne, Fla.; two daughters, Monica Minor of Clermont, Fla., and Nicole Minor of Hawthorne, Fla.; three sisters, Carolyn Traster and Ginnie Kender of Lorain, Ohio, and Shelva Vargovich of Hawthorne, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose & Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley,  on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Reverend Gary Eskins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, W.Va.

Carlile Moye

Carlile Moye, 82, of Sophia went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 after a short illness.

Born July 1, 1931, he was a son of the late Paris and Hallie Ellison Moye.

Carlile enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a 1949 graduate of Stoco High School and a 1955 graduate of Concord College. Carlile received his Masters degree from WVU. After a 34 year career in education, he retired as principal from Fairdale Elementary School in 1989. Carlile also served his nation in the Army during the Korean War. 

In addition to his parents, Carlile is preceded in death his brother, Bill Moye.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 58 years, Nira Robertson Moye; son, Carlile Moye Jr.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia with Pastor Melvin Jamison officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Robert Johnson, Greg Stovall, Jeff Collins, James Collins, Tom McKinney, Leo Shelton and Dewey Bone.

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Basil “Sam” Neely Jr., 66, of Vero Beach, passed away on April 1, 2014 at Sebastian River Medical Center.

Ann G. Pollock

 MULLENS — Ann Gorham (Dodge) Pollock, 75, of Mullens, ended her 20 year battle with Alzheimer’s on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Wyoming Nursing and Rehab Center and began to truly live for the first time in the light of the Glory of the Lord.

Born August 15, 1938 at Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Edward N. and Kathryn Mildred (Hance) Dodge.

In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.

Ann was a graduate of Dumont High School in New Jersey and Sherwood School of Music in New York. After high school she attended Moody Bible Institute and was an accomplished pianist and organist. While at Moody she met the love of her life, David G. Pollock.

She and David ministered together for 55 years in Southern West Virginia and in various other places throughout the Eastern United States. They served several years at the Otsego Bible Chapel and were currently serving in their 53rd year at Welton Bible Chapel.

Ann was a former music teacher, a 30 year employee of the Wyoming County Board of Education, retiring as a Kindergarten Aide at Mullens Elementary School. 

Ann was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, David G. Pollock; son, David G. Pollock Jr. and his wife, Lynn of Portland, Oreg.; two daughters, Debby K. Services will be 12 noon, Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Welton Bible Chapel, Allen Junction, with Mr. Larry Deeds and Dr. Jerry Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery, Hinton.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Men of the Welton Bible Chapel will serve as pallbearers.

Donald Wayne ‘Rusty’ Trail

The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. One path we shall never choose is the path of surrender or submission.

Donald Wayne ‘Rusty’ Trail, 64, of Meadow Bridge, left this earthly abode to be with his Eternal Father on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.

Born March 7, 1950, at Beelick Knob, he was the son of the late Harvey and Nina Burdette Trail.

Rusty proudly served in the US Army, as a dental technician, serving two tours in VietNam. He was awarded 3 ribbons and 6 medals, including the VietNam Campaign Medal, the VietNam Gallantry Cross w/Palm Medal, the VietNam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.  Rusty attended Meadow Bridge High School and graduated from Sandstone High School.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert ‘Bobby’ and James ‘Jimmy’ Trail and two infant sisters.

Survivors include two daughters that he loved dearly, Amy Sue Trail Fawns and fiancé Brad Brierly and Donna Jean Shields and husband Gene, all of Owinsville, Ky.; three  grandchildren Jarrett and Leann Fawns and Gracie Shields; three brothers, Harvey ‘Butch’ Trail and wife Carolyn of Lewisburg, Gary Lee Trail of Ozark, Mo. and Steve Trail and wife Violet of Hinton; five sisters Gaythlee Skaggs and husband John of West Plains, Mo., Jean Sifers and husband Lonnie of Meadow Bridge, Sandra Carter and husband Stephen of Clintonville, Marie Williams and husband Dave of Roanoke, Va. and Debra Haynes of Elton; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in the Lick Creek Baptist Church, Green Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Tim Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in the Halladan Cemetery on Lick Creek Road with military honors by American Legion Post #32 Honor Guard.
