Sally Young

It is with great sadness that we the family of our beloved Sally Young annouce her untimely passing. Sally died suddenly on Saturday, Feb. 15th, 2014, at her home on Park Avenue of an apparent heart attack. She was 80 years young.

The first of two children, Sally Sue Bunch was born on Dec. 1st, 1933, in Danville, Illinois. Her parents were the late Jesse Carl and Beuna Ophelia Yoho Bunch. Her brother, Don survives of Big Stone Gap, Va.

Sally’s early years were spent in Danville. Her father, Carl was a pioneer in the formative years of the UMWA taking the Bunches to several places to live. The family came to West Virginia when Sally was 9, eventually settling on Temple Street in Beckley. The Bunch family worshiped at the First United Methodist Church.

A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1952, Sally was a majorette and remembered for her vivacious spirit. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Sally had a great love of horses throughout her life which she passed on to her grandchildren. She loved to sing and dance. A long time employee of the Raleigh County Board of Education, Sally retired from the Purchasing Department in 1998.

Over 50 years ago, Sally marrried her beloved husband, Robert “Froggy” Young. They have been blessed to raise three children. Sally was the precious mother of Matthew D. Young who resides in Atlanta, Robin DeMarchi and her husband, Leno of Charleston and Bobby Young and his wife, Kellie who make their home in Beckley. In a time of her life when she would say, “You know it’s hell getting old,” her grandchildren have kept her young. They have been a great joy. She was the doting Ma Maw to Aubry, Meghan, Makenzie, Tanner, Brody, and Emerson.

Sally was honored with an extended family of neices and nephews, Brady and his wife, Farrah, Kristi and her husband, Tony, Donna and Carla.

At this time in life, Sally was fortunate to still have two aunts, Merry Terry of Chula Vista, Calif., and Isabel Welch of Newark, Ohio. Sally and Froggy have many friends. They enjoyed going to the Raleigh County Senior Citzen Center on South Kanawha Street, the Moose Lodge and were great fans of Calacinos.

In these last days Sally has not felt well but just last Thursday week, she went dancing at Calacinos. Oh that love for life…

On Wednesday, Feb. 19th, at 1 p.m. we will honor the life Sally Sue Young with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Jerryd Clyburn will be officiating. Sally will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce and Donnie Anderson, Bruce Blankenship, Bill Brown, Leno DeMarchi, Peanut Holley, Phillip Jarrell, George McCune, Frank Meadows and Jerry Zaferatos.

And so now we must say goodbye to Sally “Fun” Young. You were too much loved to ever be forgotten. Somewhere over the rainbow… we will all meet up… God Speed.
