Samuel Russell Bennett

HINTON — Samuel Russell Bennett, 84, of Tug Creek Road, Hinton, died at 2:04 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, W.Va.

Born January 10, 1930, in Hinton, he was the son of the late Samuel E. and Luella Berry Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a construction trade carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Angell, six brothers, Basil, Roy, Raymond, Lundy, Mason and Garfield Bennett and three sisters, Mae Teabo, Bertie Cales and Effie Barber.

Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Pitzer Bennett; three sons, Michael Bennett and wife Pamela of Hardy, Va., Bobby E. Bennett and companion Charlotte of Herndon, W.Va. and Samuel Russell Bennett Jr. of Hinton; one daughter, Debbie Grimmett and Johnny of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Dorothy Bennett of Christiansburg, Va.; and 12 grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Bennett Cemetery at Tug Creek near Hinton. Friends may call from noon until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

ECCLES — Danny Howard Bradley, 68, of Eccles, passed away on Feb, 11, 2014.

Service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at Melton Mortuary Chapel with visitation from 11 a.m. to service hour. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Robert Jerome  Copney Jr.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Mr. Robert Jerome Copney Jr,. 50, of Raleigh, died Thursday, February 6, 2014.

Born August 18, 1963, in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Robert J. Copney Sr. and Laverne C. Smith of Raleigh, N.C.

Along with his mother, those left to cherish precious memories are his sisters, Kerry Lynette Copney of Phoenix, Ariz., Robin Laverne Copney of Beckley, and Alita Rochelle Copney of Raleigh, N.C.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Second Baptist  Church, 700 F. Street, Beckley, with Rev. Rudolph Poindexter officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

OAK HILL — Danny Ray Fleshman Sr., 51, of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.

WHITMAN — Bonnie Gingise, 82, of Whitman, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014.

Susie ‘Kay’ Hall

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Susie Katherine “Kay” Hall, 77, of Parkersburg, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.

She was born on June 8, 1936, in Fayette County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Homer and Nellie Bennett of Backus Mountain.

Kay graduated from Meadow Bridge High School and then continued her education at the Camden Clark Hospital School of Nursing in Parkersburg. She graduated as a registered nurse. Even after retirement she continued to be a caregiver for those surrounding her.

Kay was a member of the Sams Creek Baptist Church and served as editor of “The Sams Creek Chronicle,” the church newsletter. She was organizer of the annual Hall family reunion and enjoyed spending her time surround by her many family members and friends. She was faithful to the Lord and a true blessing to everyone around her. Kay loved to sing and in doing so, shared her love and grace with all who were privileged to hear her sing. Her hands were never idle. She was always at work, sharing her gifts and helping those around her.

Left to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 42 years, Dale Hall; beloved son and best friend, Mark E. Newell and wife, Norma of Coal City, W.Va.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Gwinn and husband, Dusty of Beckley, W.Va. and Beth Farley of Coal City; one great granddaughter, Landrey Cadence Gwinn; two sisters-in-law, Maureen Bennett and Clara Bennett; one aunt, Mildred Vandell; loving nephews, Mike Ball and wife, Carole and Charles Bennett; loving niece, Patty Ball; great-nephews, John Ball, Daniel Jones and Thomas Bennett; great-great-nephew, Bryant Ball; great-great-niece, Riley Ball; and many other special family members and friends who she counted as family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John Bennett and Calvin Bennett; her sister, Mary Ellen Ball; her nephew, Thomas Bennett; and her great-niece, Angela Ball.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Pike St., south Parkersburg, with Pastors Carl Radcliff, Mark Watkins and Tom Hall officiating. Entombment will follow at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home.

Ruby Lee Manuel Jordon

On Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, our beloved Mother Jordon “Ruby Lee Manuel Jordon,” of Beckley, passed away at Vienna Manor, Vienna, Va. She was 93 years of age.

Born on March 29, 1920, in Birmingham, Ala. Ruby was the daughter of the late Floyd and Emma Manuel. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Kenneth Jordon who passed away on Oct. 6, 1988.

Ruby enjoyed spending time with her Arts and Crafts, Culinary skills, her children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. She also enjoyed traveling and was a member of Senior Friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Harrison L. Jordon of Virginia, Michael K. Jordon of Georgia; daughter, Carolyn P. Jordon of Virginia; daughters-in-law, Dorothy L. Jordon of Virginia and Deiores Leonard Jordon of Georgia. Grandchildren include Lolita Renee Jordon, Diahann Michelle Jordon, Shawntel and Brittney Jordon and Jordon and Sean Kinslow. Carrie G. Lawson, niece of Marietta, Ga. and James “Jimmy” Reid and wife, Debra of New York; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces nd nephews.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at Central Baptist Church, 197 Brook St., Beckley, W.Va. Ruby will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, James K. Jordon in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, W.Va.

Nancy McClung Horrocks Knupp

Nancy Charlene McClung Horrocks Knupp, the daughter of the deceased Pastor William I. and Lois K. McClung passed away on February 9, 2014, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. Her death was the result of injuries sustained when her home burned down in Fayetteville, W.Va., on January 28, 2014.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Walt Knupp; daughter, Becky Buckland and her husband, Marshall; grandchildren, Elijah and Matthew Buckland; brother, William McClung II and his wife, Janet; niece, Candace Rose and her husband, William; niece, Beth Keith and her husband Derek; step daughters, Kristina Knupp, Thoma and Carin Knupp; step son Randall Knupp; and six step grandchildren and numerous cousins and countless friends including her church family at Lochgelly Baptist Church.

In honor of Nancy’s wishes she was cremated and a memorial service will be held to commemorate her life at Fayetteville Baptist Church in Fayetteville, on Saturday, February 14, 2014. Friends and family may gather for visitation from noon to 2 p.m. to acknowledge and celebrate the life of Mrs. Knupp. The funeral services will begin afterwards at 2 p.m. To recognize her love for animals and helping others, Nancy’s wish would be to please make a donation to a local animal shelter or the Gideon Ministry in lieu of flowers. Any small act of kindness or helpful gesture in the local community is all that Nancy would have wanted in her remembrance. She will be dearly missed by so many.”

 



George Nichols

FAYETTEVILLE — George Nichols, 61, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014, at his home.

Born August 6, 1952, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Bessie Ruth Dickenson Nichols and the late George Brackett Nichols.

Mr. Nichols was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War serving in 82nd Airborne Division, a retired engineer with Railserve and the family caregiver for many family members.

Besides his father Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his Aunt, Wavelenor Swiger.

Survivors include his mother, Bessie Ruth Nichols; daughter, Catherine Ann Cotton of Roseville, Mich., son, Jason Edward Nichols of Fayetteville, daughter, Angela Marie Christopher and her husband, Charles of Roseville, Mich.; nine grandchildren; two brothers; three sisters and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2013, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home.

Bert Ray Nugen

FAYETTEVILLE — Bert Ray Nugen, 87, of Fayetteville, departed this life Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born on May 7, 1926 in Dempsey, W.Va.

Mr. Nugen was a member of the Fayetteville First Church of God formerly serving on the board of trustees; retired mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Services and a bus operator with Fayette County Schools; a member of the Fayetteville American Legion Post 149 and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Nugen in 2008; daughter, Linda Nugen and brother, Richard “Dick” Nugen.

Left with many wonderful memories to cherish is one son, Alan Nugen and wife, Kim of Fayetteville; three daughters, Diana Hogan and husband, Jim of Fayetteville, Karen Hildebrand and husband Terry of Oak Hill and Sandra Price and husband, Monty of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Hogan, Jonathan Hogan, Julia Mallard, Chris Hildebrand, Kevin Hildebrand, Logan Nugen, Laura Price and Nathan Price; six great-grandchildren, Ryan Persinger, Erica Hogan, Jamie Hogan, Faith Mallard, Kaelyn Mallard and Andrew Pigg; special thanks to his caregivers Eva and Karla, VAMC adult day care center, the DAV drivers and “Mack”, also Dr. Mark White and his staff.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2014, at Fayetteville First Church of God with Pastor Mike Parsons and Pastor Danny Goins officiating. Interment will follow at Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill.

Charles Edgar Pugh

Charles Edgar Pugh, age 82, of Eccles, beloved husband, and best friend of Mary Williams Pugh for 56 years passed away peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2014, after a long illness.

Mr. Pugh was born on June 1, 1931, in Eccles, W.Va. He was preceded death by his parents, Frank Arthur and Mary Alice McGee Pugh as well as siblings Sally, Naomi, Frank Arthur, Leonard, James, and Dexter.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife Mary, daughter Kathie and husband Kevin Pitchford of Staunton, Va., daughter Kimberly and husband David Farley of Beckley, son Eddie Pugh and wife Cara of Eccles; two sisters, Margaret Stone of Eccles, and Pearl Hebb of Colorado. Grandchildren include, Nikole, Nicholas, Rachel, Cameron, and Sonni. Great grandchildren, Jaimen, Landon, Maddie, and Breckston, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and close friends.

After proudly serving his country in the Korean War as an armor crewmen (tanker), in the  U.S. Army, Mr. Pugh was honorably discharged and went on to a successful career of 43 years with the Kroger Company. He lived his life as he served his country, with pride, integrity, respect, and honor. Those are the qualities he had instilled in his children and they have instilled in theirs. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, February 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Danny Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Friday.
