Richard Johnson Amon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Mr. Richard Johnson Amon passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.; he was 75.

Mr. Amon is preceded in death by his parents Agnes and Collis Amon, a brother Don Amon, and a sister Ida Kay Crookshanks.

He is survived by his wife Gay Amon, two sons: Richard Don Amon and wife Deidra, of Marietta, GA, and Ronald Dean Amon and wife Michelle, of Temple, GA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and a brother John Amon, of Mauldin, MO.

A service for the family will be held at a later date. A visitation will be held at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring, WV, on Saturday, June 29, 2013, from 3 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ann Lee Collins

Ann Lee Collins, age 72, of Prosperity, WV, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on October 24, 1940, at Helen, WV, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Virginia Lyons.

She was a member of the Glen Morgan Missionary Baptist Church, and was a retired cook for the Raleigh County Board of Education.

Mrs. Collins was also preceded in death by her sister, Norma Jean Lyons, and by a daughter Norma Jean Collins.

Those survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 53 years, James Ray Collins; Three sons: Jeff Collins and his wife Shirley of Greensboro, NC; Ricky Collins of Greensboro, NC; and Eddie Collins and his wife Becky of Prosperity, WV.

Grandchildren: Lee Ann Collins of Prosperity, Aleisha Collins of Prosperity, Jeremy Collins of Ridgeway, Virginia, Jessi Pritt and her husband Elliott of Japan, Andy Stone of Oak Hill, and Cody Taylor of Pax.

Great-grandchildren: William Noah Jackson, Bayleigh Cheyenne Collins, of Ridgeway, Virginia, and Abel Pritt of Japan.

Mrs. Collins loved spending time with her family, relaxing, and playing a game of bingo.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Ernie Junior Moye officiating. Burial will follow at the Workman’s Creek Cemetery at Workman’s Creek. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Thomas J. (Dudie) Cunningham

RICHWOOD — Thomas J. (Dudie) Cunningham, 77, of Richwood died at home June 22, 2013, after a short illness.

He was born in Richwood September 18, 1935, to Pauline Chambers and Thomas M. Cunningham of Richwood.

He was preceded in death by his mother Pauline Miller, his stepfather Elige Miller, his father Thomas M. Cunningham and his son James (Chip) Robert Cunningham.

Tom was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Summersville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He enjoyed activities such as reading, fishing, walking the trails around Richwood, and his variety of birds he watched and fed, including mallard ducks, bluejays, cardinals, hummingbirds and his feline friends.

He leaves behind his wife Christa Cunningham, Richwood; his brother William John (Wease) Cunningham; his son Tommy and wife Corinna of Richwood; his daughter Debra Ramey of Georgetown, KY; his grandson Travis Ramey and wife Meredith of Oak Hill; his grandson Zach Ramey of Georgetown, KY; his grandson Josh Cunningham of Richwood; his granddaughter Keonna Cunningham of Germany; and grandson Jurian Cunningham of Germany.

A memorial service will be held at the Summersville Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Brother David Burroughs officiating.

Per Mr. Cunningham’s wishes, he will be cremated and his remains entombed at Mt. View Memorial Park in Richwood.

Dixie Francis   Donohue

DILLE — Dixie Francis Donohue, 94, of Dille passed away Friday morning, June 21, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, in the Big Union Baptist Church at Dille with Pastor Danny Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Strange Creek. Friends may call from 6 to 8 Sunday at Waters Funeral Chapel in Summersville.

Kevin Lee Mays

Kevin Lee Mays, 48, of Beckley, passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 20, 2013. Kevin left this world to go home to be with the Lord.

Born on May 14, 1965, in Beckley, he was the son of Rodney and Linda “Susie” Crouch Mays.

He is also survived by his brother, Greg “Killer” Mays of Beckley, his God sister Kirsten Wolfe, uncle Herbie Crouch, uncle Pat and aunt Patricia Crouch, aunt Roseanna Anglin, many cousins: Chris Flower, Tammy Crouch Flower and her husband Chris, Vicky Crouch Toney and her husband Ken, Missy Crouch, Jeff Crouch and his wife Heather, Brian Crouch and his wife Robin, Brandon Scott Crouch, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Crouch, Kelly Crouch Elkins and her husband Rodney, Pam Crouch, Bonnie Crouch Richmond and her husband Donnie, Donald Crouch and his wife Lillian, and Jonathan Crouch. Special aunts, Beverly Litton, and aunt Sandy. He leaves behind his special pet, “Suz,” who was a constant companion.

Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Annie Crouch, and Edith Mays, uncles, Johnny and Carlos Crouch, Aunt Linda Crouch, and a special cousin Margaret Crouch.

Kevin enjoyed golfing with his family, boating, and bowling.

He was a graduate of Charleston High School, and was a long-distance truck driver for many years before his illness. Kevin was a member of the Cranberry Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Cranberry Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may visit with the family at the Cranberry Baptist Church from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Vallie Jane McGraw

Vallie Jane McGraw, 96, of Beckley, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born on January 29, 1917, at Bolt, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Larkin Austin Bailey and Nancy Mae Snuffer Bailey.

Mrs. McGraw was a homemaker, and was a member of the Cross Pointe Church of God in Beckley. She had made Beckley her home for most of her life. Mrs. McGraw enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and working in her flower garden. She loved all people and had never met a stranger.

Mrs. McGraw was preceded in death by her husband, B. Keith McGraw, by a son, Fred Shumate, by sisters, Sadie Snuffer, Ruby Daniel, and by brothers, Carmen, Arnold Bailey, and Clinton Bailey.

Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis York and her husband Gary of Beckley; four grandchildren, Donna Preston and her husband Donald of Tennessee, Gary Brown and his wife Betty of Tennessee, Vicky Shumate of Texas, and Bryan Shumate of Texas; five great-grandchildren, Amanda Newman, Jared Eaton, Hannah Brown, Britney Brown, and Joseph Shumate; two great-great-grandchildren, Porter and Adele Newman; a sister, Bernice Acord of Bolt, and her special friend Jane Wickline of Daniels, W.Va.

Funeral services will  be conducted at the Cross Pointe Church of God on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Vondie Cook officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, and also at the church one hour prior to the services on Monday.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Kenneth Edmund ‘Ed’ Pettry

ST. ALBANS — Kenneth Edmund “Ed” Pettry, 80, of St. Albans, passed away on June 21, 2013, at the Dunbar Genesis Center after an extended illness. He fought a long battle over the past 8 1/2 years suffering a brain stem stroke.

He was born in Daniels, WV, on October 3, 1932, to Cal and Betty Pettry. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Ella Lynne, sisters, Hila Gregior, Reba Adamos, Thelma Bailey, and Evelyn Cole, brothers, Howard, Paul, and Bob.

Ed was a 1950 graduate of Shady Spring High School where he excelled in football and basketball. After high school he worked at the Pettry Service Station in Beaver until he was inducted into the Army on March 11, 1963, and was honorably discharged on December 28, 1954.

In August 1957, Ed moved to St. Albans and married his surviving spouse, Lois Anne Thompson. He was then employed by Baldwin Supply Company until 1963, when he was employed at FMC in South Charleston until he retired in 1994.

Ed was a hard worker and spent many hours at the FMC Sportsman’s Club where he was a board member and grounds chairman for several years. He also served on the board of directors at West Side Volunteer Fire Department in St. Albans. Summer time was spent with family and friends camping at Sherwood Lake each July. A lot of happy times and memories were made and never forgotten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lois, son, Dwight (Kim), of St. Albans, granddaughters, Danielle of Bozeman, MT, and Destany, of St. Albans, sister, Alma Lilly, of Richmond, VA, sisters-in-law, Zora Pettry of Beckley, Betty Pettry, of Daniels, and Rita Pettry, of Antioch, TN. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and great-great-nephews and nieces.

Celebration of Ed’s life will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2013, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Gathering of family and friends will be Sunday from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Gilda Jane Brinkley Phillips

KEYROCK — Gilda Jane Brinkley Phillips, 48, of Keyrock, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013.

Born June 18, 1965, at Mullens, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Dewey Brinkley and Clara Grose Brinkley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman L. “Tony” Phillips, Jr., and two sisters, Gaynell Blankenship and Terri Thompson.

Gilda dearly loved her children and all their friends that were always at her home.

Those left to cherish her memory are: her son, Norman “Stormy” Phillips of Pineville; a daughter, Gabriel “Gabby” Nicole Phillips of Pineville; sisters, Dot Sue and husband, Roger Moran, of Mullens, Marty and her husband, Forrest Lewis, of Rockhill, SC, and Jackie and her husband, Bobby Smith, of Lexington, NC; brothers, David and wife, Teresita Parks, of VA, Bill and his wife, Evelyn Brinkley, of Mullens, Andy and his wife, Jennifer Blankenship, of Lexington, NC; 11 nieces and nephews; and several extended family members and friends.

A celebration of Gilda’s life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville. The Rev. Evan Arkell will officiate. Burial will follow in Privett Family Cemetery, Keyrock. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Jimmy Thompson, Bobby Smith, Arron Bennett, Nathan Compton, Brent Morgan and Tyler Blankenship will serve as pallbearers.

Frank Turner

Frank H. Turner, 88, of Beckley, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

Born on May 27, 1925, at Renick, W.Va., he was the son of the late Greeley P. Turner and Nellie B. Perkins Turner.

Mr. Turner was a retired farm manager at the Pinecrest Hospital in Beckley with 39 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during WWII. He was of the Presbyterian faith, and enjoyed gardening.

Mr. Turner was a Beckley resident for most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalee Turner, by a sister, Marjorie Cook, and by brothers Gene and Dale Turner.

Surviving are his children, Dennis Turner and his wife Linda of Chesapeake, Va., Marilyn Sue Phillips and her husband Lionel of Grandview; three grandchildren, Jennifer O’Neal, Rachel Pridgen, and John Turner, and several great-grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Turner was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
