Herbert McKinney 84, of Sophia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, in the Bowers Hospice House, following a long battle with black lung.
Born May 29, 1929, at Tommy’s Ridge he was the son of the late William and Gertrude Meadows McKinney.
Herbert had worked for over 50 years in the mining industry, retiring as a Federal Mine Inspector at the District 4 office in Mt. Hope. He was a very devoted father and grandfather. He dearly loved his family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded by in death by his wife of 34 years Audrey McKinney, and his grandson Justin McKinney, and 13 brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy include his children: Herkie McKinney and his wife Sue of Shady Spring, Debbie White and her husband Jonathan of Scarbro, Rocky McKinney and wife Judy of Beckley, Jerry McKinney and wife Tammy of Beckley; nine grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, and a special friend Phyillis Shelor, and a host of nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Services will be private with burial taking place at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Beckley.
In lieu of flowers donations are asked to be made in Herbert’s memory to Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

Gwendolyn Miller, 60, of Sophia, passed away Sunday June 16, 2013.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Sophia. Friends may call from noon until service time Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton.
