— Jean Ann Redden Crisp

Jean Ann Redden Crisp, age 74, of Shady Spring, departed this world and entered Heaven free from pain and suffering on Friday, June 14, 2013, from a sudden illness.

Mom lived most of her life on Pluto Road in Shady Spring, where she was a homemaker and a mother of four children. She had a very giving heart and enjoyed listening to her radio, watching television and always cleaning her home.

Mom was preceded in death by her mother, Jessie G. Penturff Redden, her father Delbert K. Redden, by a granddaughter Amber Lee Ann Radford.

Those left to cherish her memory include her brother Danny Redden and his wife Beverley of Shady Spring, her sister, Della Mae Bennett and her husband Randy of Mt. Nebo, W.Va. Her children: Debbie Collins and her husband Everette of Cool Ridge, Beckie Meador of Cool Ridge, Tammy Radford and her husband Richard of Daniels, and Frankie Crisp and his wife Cindy of Cool Ridge. Grandchildren: Matthew Meador, Jesse Meador, Hollie Meador, Crystal Allen, Michelle Black, Seth Radford, Kristi Radford, and Isabella Tolliver. Great-grandchildren: Erica, Kayla, Justin, Kenzie, Maranda, Sydney, Audrey, Ridge, Joseph, and Madelyn. A great-great-granddaughter, Aubrey.

Our mother was born on February 14, 1939, at Beaver, W.Va. She will always live in our heart and mind.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Rodney Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Monday.

Pallbearers will be Everette Collins, Matthew Meador, Jesse Meador, Frankie Crisp, Richard Radford, Seth Radford, and Donald Richmond.

Clayton T. Dickens

WYCO — Clayton Truman Dickens, 60, of Wyco, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born February 14, 1953, at Bluefield, W.Va., he was the son of Alpha (Salyer) Dickens of Nokesville, Va., and the late Truman Monroe Dickens.

Clayton was a former yard foreman for Means Lumber Company, Mullens. He attended Herndon Freewill Baptist Church and in his leisure he enjoyed trout fishing, Ginsenging, especially loved buying and swapping guns, and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his father he is also preceded in death by a brother, Douglas Dickens; and an infant sister, Dorothy Dickens.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 13 years, Opal Irene Mullens Dickens; four daughters, Dorothy Fannin and her husband, Jason, Shaina Mullens, Amanda Mullens, and Catherine Mills and her husband, Alan; two sons, Ronnie Dickens and Gregory Mullens and his wife, Tralaine; seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Audrianna, Abby, Chase, Ryan, Amy Lee, and Kaylee; one sister, Tina Louise Cisler; and one brother, Timmy Dickens.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at Herndon Freewill Baptist Church, Herndon, with Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Rebecca Lynn Goff

Rebecca Lynn Goff, 64, of Beaver, previously of Mount Nebo in Nicholas County, died June 14, 2013.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, in the Walker Memorial Park at Summersville with Pastor Butch Collins officiating. In keeping with Becky’s wishes there will be no visitation.     

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

White Funeral Home at Summersville is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Mary Adeline  Gravely

HURRICANE — Mary Adeline Gravely, 65, of Hurricane, formerly of Oak Hill, passed away June 14, 2013.

She was a graduate of Collins High School, Oak Hill, and was a homemaker and caregiver.

She is survived by her daughter, Angela White and husband Ronnie White of Milton; daughter, Corie Gravely of Poca; son, Cris Gravely of Denver, Colorado; granddaughters, Adeline Dale and Ashley Steed of Poca; grandsons, Joel Steed of Poca and Zane White of Milton; brothers, Larry Harler and wife Shelby of Kincaid; Douglas Harler and wife Carol of Knoxville, Tenn.; James Harler and wife Carolyn of Fayetteville; William Harler and wife Betty of Kincaid; Donald Harler and wife Janet of Kincaid; sisters, Rebecca Clark of Fayetteville; Martha Bertram and husband Jeff of Mobile, Ala.; 17 nieces and nephews and many people who remember her fondly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nathilee Harler.

Friends may visit the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at Chapman Funeral Home, 3941 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane.

Dorothy Kathern Barnard (Obugene) Hancock

“Upright and pretty in all her ways, loyal and true through all her days, silently suffered, patiently bore, God took her home so she would suffer no more.”

PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. — Dorothy Kathern Barnard (Obugene) Hancock, age 76, of Pleasant Grove, Ala., passed away June 11, 2013, with her family by her side.

She was born on February 24, 1937, in Eunice, W.Va. Dorothy was raised in Packsville, W.Va., and attended Marsh Fork High School.

In 1954, Dorothy married the late John B. Obugene and they had two sons together, John B. Obugene Jr. and Marcus Wayne Obugene. In 1969 Dorothy married her soulmate, the late John “Frank” Hancock. Together they shared 35 amazing years and had one son, Gregory Allen Hancock. “Frank” was a coal miner and in 1979 they relocated to Pleasant Grove, Ala., and there they planted their roots. Dorothy was retired from Walmart (Fairfield, Ala.). She was the department manager in fabric and crafts for 25 years. Dorothy enjoyed her job and had a passion for crafts and sewing and also because she just loved people. She never met a stranger and loved to talk to anyone about any and everything.

Dorothy was a Baptist by faith and was a member of First Baptist Church of Pleasant Grove, Ala.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Drusilla Barnard; husband John “Frank” Hancock; and three brothers Richard (Irene) Barnard, Charles Barnard, and Ralph Barnard.

Dorothy is survived in death by her three sons, John (Lynn) B. Obugene Jr., Wayne Obugene, both of Mooresville, N.C., Gregory (fiancée Amy) Hancock of Hueytown, Ala.; grandchildren, Misty, Chris, Matthew, Melissa, Derek, Adam, and GracieBell; and several special great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Debbie Barnard; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dorothy had a viewing at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown, Ala., on Friday, June 14, 2013.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Dorothy will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley with Dr. Charles Bright officiating. She will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Dorothy was loved by so many; she was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend and to those she forever touched their hearts and she will forever be missed dearly.

The Hancock family would like to show their appreciation to Dr. Charles Skoog for 30 years of dedication as Dorothy’s physician, thank you.

Donald ‘Don’ E. Howerton

Donald “Don” E. Howerton, 83, of Grandview, passed away June 10, 2013.

Don was born on January 30, 1930. He worked as a Safety Director for Armco/Peabody Coal, and attended Grandview Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Fern Howerton; son, Donnie and wife, Cindy Howerton; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Philip Maltempie; stepson and daughter-in-law, Steve and Belinda Thompson; grandchildren, Adam and Elizabeth Maltempie, John, Brady and Alexis Howerton, granddaughter Kara, and grandson, Benjie Howerton; and 5 Great-Grandchildren; six brothers and a sister; brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Judy Shumate; mother-in-law, Virginia Shumate; many friends and family, and a family dog, Star.

Honoring Don’s wishes, there will be no service; his body will be cremated.

Charolette Murphy Huffman

Charolette Murphy Huffman, 83, formerly of Coal City, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, after a long illness.

She was born in Van Wood, W.Va., on July 22, 1929. She grew up in McDowell County, W.Va. She was a loving daughter, wife, sister and mother. She was dedicated to her faith having been saved in 1945 at the Iaeger Church of God. She was a faithful and hardworking member of the Coal City Church of God for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Iva Mae Lambert; brothers, Paul, J.C., and W.B. Lambert; sisters, Nina Ross, Evelyn Perry, Garnet Shaw, Phyllis LaFlamme, and Mollie Dawson; first husband, Wallace Murphy; and second husband, Raymond Carson Huffman.

She is survived by her son, Gary Murphy; her daughter-in-law Sheila Murphy; grandchildren, John Murphy and Emily Murphy; brother Ray Lambert; and sister, Maxine Bowles; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Family members would like to send thanks to the staff of Jackie Withrow Hospital for the excellent care that Charolette received while residing at their facility.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, for all family and friends at the Coal City Church of God, with the Rev. Clarence Lee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Coal City Church of God or the Salvation Army.

 

Clarice L. Sodder

FAYETTEVILLE — Clarice L. Sodder, 80, of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013.

Arrangements are pending. Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville, will be assisting the family.

Miles Monroe Vance III, 52, of Coal City died Wednesday, June 12, 2013.
