Vera Cerena Applegate
GHENT — Vera Cerena Applegate, age 91, of Flat Top Road, Ghent, WV, passed away Monday morning, December 2, 2013, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV.
Born February 25, 1922, at Ghent, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Dee Sweeney and Esta Maggie (Williams) Sweeney.
Her husband of 58 years, Roy L. Applegate, preceded her in death in May 1995. Sisters, Lelia E. Cottle and Joy I. Hale, and a brother Alvin D. Sweeney also preceded her in death.
A lifelong resident of Ghent, she was a member of the Ghent Missionary Baptist Church and was the owner/operator of Vera’s Beauty Shop for many years.
Surviving are four daughters, Pattie M. Fraley (Tom) of Moorefield, WV, Seretha F. Mills of Pittsboro, IN, Darfane L. Ramsey (Mike Richmond) of Cool Ridge, WV, and Beebee D. Shrewsbury (Basil) of Odd, WV, two sons, Stanley E. Applegate of Barstow, WV, and “Zeke” Applegate of Ghent, WV; a brother, Lonnie L. Sweeney of Beckley, WV; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013, at the Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home’s Shady Spring Chapel, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring, WV. Interment will follow at the Tom Lilly Cemetery, Flat Top, WV.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Wayne Lewis Atkinson
LEWISBURG — Wayne Lewis Atkinson of Lewisburg, West Virginia, passed away on December 1, 2013.
He was born February 19, 1946, son of Frank and Edith Atkinson.
He is survived by his wife, Ernestine A. Atkinson, his son, Gregory L. Atkinson (Elaina), their children, Theo and Nate, of Hurricane, West Virginia; his daughter Rebecca A. Blake and her children, Haley and John, of Alderson, West Virginia. Also survived by his brothers, Steve Atkinson (Nancy) of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Mike Atkinson of Mooresville, North Carolina.
Mr. Atkinson was a graduate of Lewisburg High School in 1964, a graduate of West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Also a graduate of Cumberland University and Bluefield State University.
He was a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist, past president of the WVU School of Pharmacy Alumni Association, president of the American Association of Consult Pharmacists.
He was employed by the Rainelle Medical Center and the Joint Commission as a Health Care Facility Surveyor.
He was a founding member, Elder and Sunday School Teacher of Edgewood Presbyterian Church.
A member of the Board of American Association of Geriatric Pharmacists, Board of Seneca Mental Health and the Board of Hospice of Greenbrier County.
The Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, at the Edgewood Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following.

RAINELLE — Keith Gardner Cook, 89, of Rainelle, received his call home Saturday, November 30, 2013, at his home following a short illness.
Born September 17, 1924, at Quinwood, he was the last of the late Henry and Almeda Lilly Cook family.
Keith served in the United States Navy during WWII. Returning home, he worked in the coal mines and then served on the Rainelle City Police force for many years. Keith then went to work for the WV State Road as maintenance supervisor for five counties. He was a faithful member of the McRoss Baptist Church and recently received his 50-year Masonic pin from the Midland Trail Masonic Lodge #166, Rainelle.
Preceding him in death are his wife Polly Holland Cook; his daughter Cheryl Jean Cook; his son Lloyd Cook; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Keith leaves behind several nieces and nephews, some who were very special to him, Ruth Ann Hagy and husband Dennis, Linda Smith, Wanda Comer, Curtis Keister and wife Laura and son Austin, Jack Cook and Kevin Nutter; 2 very special friends Connie Yearego and Sharon Dunford; one stepdaughter Donna Martin; 3 stepgrandchildren Desiree, Al and Andrea Schmitt; and 2 special pastors Eddie Ray Goddard and Bennie Kenney.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastor and friend Bennie Kenney officiating. Entombment will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.
Friends may call Monday, December 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Phyllis Ann Flowers Dickens, 74, of Beaver, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 1, 2013.
She was born December 21, 1939, in WV, a daughter of the late Maurice and Vada Mae Jarrell Flowers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandmother, Maudie Jarrell.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Samuel Dickens Sr., a daughter, Paula Jayne Dickens Jessee (Randy), sons, Robert Samuel Dickens Jr., Rick Alfred Dickens (Stephanie), Donal Darl Dickens (Kelley); grandchildren, Nikki Dickens, Rustin Ray Jessee (Sarah), Leslie Jordan Dickens, Brittany M. Evans (Nick), Shane A. Dickens (Bethany), Randa LeeAnn Jessee, Seth T. Dickens (Jessica), Devin Craig Dickens, Jacob Lee Dickens; great-grandchild, Madalayn Nicole Evans.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2013, at one o’clock in the Gracepointe Fellowship, Harper, WV, with Sons Rick and Robert Jr. and Rev. Hoyle Green officiating. Interment is in Adkins Cemetery, Naoma, WV.
Pallbearers are Randy Jessee, Rustin Jessee, Shane Dickens, Seth Dickens, Devin Dickens, Nick Evans. Honorary Pallbearer is Jacob Dickens.

Anna Lee (Epperly) Elkins
FAYETTEVILLE — Anna Lee (Epperly) Elkins, 87, of Wood Road passed away on Friday, November 29, 2013, at the Hilltop Center following a long illness.
Born April 8, 1926, she was the youngest daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Epperly, who was a student and teacher at the Fayetteville Academy, and her beloved mother, Ida Virginia (Burnside) Epperly.
Anna was a retired employee of Fayette County Board of Education after fourteen years custodian working at Fayetteville Middle School and Oak Hill High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lloyd Elkins, Jr., six brothers, Martin, Lewis, Basil, Arnold, Ralph and Leslie, and three sisters, Kathleen, Arvilla, and Evelyn.
Left to miss and remember her are her son, Roger Lee Elkins, Sr., and wife Shirley of Fayetteville, her grandchildren, Roger Jr. and wife Patti of Oak Hill, Leah of Iola, KS, Kimberlee of Fayetteville, and Charles of NC.
Great-grandchildren are Colton, Kaylyn, Matthew, Shandale, and Alyssa.
Anna was a Gift of Life Donor to the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV. It was her wish that no services be held.

Sammy Eugene Forinash
Sammy Eugene Forinash, age 68, of Glade Springs, Daniels, WV, went home to be with the Lord at his home on Saturday, November 30, 2013.
Born on August 18, 1945, in Beaver, WV, he was the son of the late Lyle Ward Forinash and Marie Lucas Forinash.
Mr. Forinash was the owner and operator of Flow Technologies in Daniels, WV. He was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended Virginia Tech for a degree in engineering. He served on the Mine Safety Board of Directors. Mr. Forinash had taught Karate at YMCA in Beckley, and also assisted with the Kids Basketball Training at the YMCA.
Mr. Forinash attended the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church on C&O Dam Road in Daniels.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Sonny Edward Harrah Jr.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 39 years, Vicki Steele Forinash.
Two sons, Samuel Ryan Forinash and his wife Nicole Ashley of Wilmington, NC, Aaron Nolan Forinash and his fiancée Lealani Ai of Matthews, NC.
A brother, Johnnie Ward Forinash and his wife Melissa of Daniels, WV, and their children, Johnnie Jr. of Beckley, Jeffrey and his wife Dana of New Jersey, and Annette and her husband Todd Skaggs of Charlotte, NC.
Three sisters, Linda Sue Johnson of Daniels, and her children, Todd and his wife Amber of Shady Spring, Lisa and her husband Robert Thompson of Daniels, and Sonya and her husband Allen Forren of Shady Spring; Kathy Lewis and her husband Kenny of Beckley and their son Kenny Lewis Jr., Betty Jane Harrah of Daniels, and her daughter Crystal Calvert and her husband Gregory of Daniels.
A memorial service will be conducted to Celebrate the Life of Sammy Forinash on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 4 p.m. at the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church, 152 C&O Dam Road, Daniels, WV, with Pastor Jack Thomas and Rev. Howard Wilburn from North Carolina officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church. In memory of Mr. Forinash, in lieu of flowers, please bring to the church a canned food item for the needy. Pete J. Francesa
Pete J. Francesa of the McLean Addition, Beckley, passed into the presence of our Lord on Saturday, Nov. 30th, 2013, after a 13-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He was 72 years of age.
Born January 24th, 1941, he was the son of the late Z. M. and Adelma Francesa. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Dea Francesa McDaniel, and brother-in-law, Richard McDaniel.
Pete retired from Roche Laboratories in 2000 after a successful career in sales.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beckley where he served on the Board of Trustees. Pete also served on the Raleigh County Board of Health for many years, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, was a former member of the Beckley Rotary Club as well as a Beckley Common City Council interim member.
He is survived by Beverly “Cookie” Thompson Francesa, his wife of 46 years; his nephew, Jim McDaniel (Vicky), and their children, Jason and Amber, niece, Deborah McDaniel, and her son, Joey; sister-in-law, Marilyn Montgomery, and her sons, Michael and Gant.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4th, at 2 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, with Rev. Donald “Doc” Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Friends may call at the mortuary two hours prior to the service.

Debra Ann Shaffer Hodges, 53, of Beckley died Sunday, December 1, 2013, at a local hospital following a sudden illness.
Born February 16, 1960, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Mrs. Betty Jo Shaffer of Beckley and the late Teddy Luther Shaffer. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Cathy Jo Simpson.
After working several years at the local Veterans Administration Hospital, Debbie assisted her husband, Charles Edward (Eddie) Hodges, in his administrative duties with Beckley Moose Lodge #1606. A member of Beckley Chapter #822, Women of the Moose, for 19 years, she had earned all degrees of merit.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Teddy Ray St. Clair and wife, Katherine, of Stanaford; sister, Judy Bragg of Beckley; stepson, Charles (Chuck) Hodges, II, and wife, Christi, of Kennesaw, GA; stepdaughter, Sheila Hodges Pack and husband, Scott, of Peach Tree City, GA; four stepgrandchildren; a niece and two nephews. Debbie was anxiously awaiting the birth of her first grandchild in March. Debbie was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and she loved animals, especially her black lab Dusty.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 2013, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Rev. Ken Hawes of the Oak Grove Christian Church officiating with a special service of remembrance performed by Women of the Moose. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Bettina Virginia Breeden King
Bettina Virginia Breeden (Snootie, Toonie) King went to be with the Lord suddenly at 9:14 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013. She was born on March 29, 1927, at home in Glen Hedrick, now Beaver, WV. She was the youngest of 7 children born to the late Joseph Henry Breeden and Roxie Allie Narcissus Chissum Pack Breeden.
She was a 1944 graduate of Shady Spring High School and attended Beckley College.
She married the late Joseph Ellis King, Sr., of Lyman, MS, on February 8, 1952, in Daniels, WV. They met at the Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital where they both worked and she was one the first employees hired.
Her two children survive her. Her son, Joseph Ellis King, Jr., and his wife Martha of Houston, TX, and her daughter, April Dianne King of Daniels, with whom she made her home; one grandson, John and his wife Susanne, and 2 great-grandsons, Carsten and Christian, and by her beloved dogs Daisy and Bandit along with her service dog Cessna.
She worked most of her life as a legal and medical secretary and lived with her family in New Jersey, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas before again making West Virginia home for the last 30 years.
She was an avid horsewoman, dog and cat lover and loved the outdoors and traveling to 48 of the 50 states and Canada in her RV. She loved working and playing on the computer and blogging with friends.
She was preceded to heaven by her parents and 3 sisters, Cora Mae Breeden Pettry, Fay Olivia Breeden Meador, Gaye Breeden Lewis, and by her 3 brothers, Henry Myrl Breeden, James Breeden and Jack Charles Breeden, Sr.
She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Freda Krise, Margaret Pettry, Peggy Turner, Martha Butts, Bobby Pettry, Lois Covey, Dotty Gaye Kantor, Mary Lee Cromer, Ginger Smith, Jimmy Breeden and Karen McLeod, along with many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the angels at Raleigh General Hospital, Rhonda’s Pharmacy and the most caring Dr. Todd Bramlee.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Gospel Chapel, 1134 C&O Dam Road, Daniels, WV, with Pastor Luke Richmond officiating. Zeda Renshaw Owens
ELKTON, Md. — Zeda Grace Renshaw Owens, age 89, of Elkton, MD, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013. Born in Alderson, WV, on January 20, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William P. and Lula Parker Aliff.
Mrs. Owens had worked for RMR Corporation and retired from Blue Chip. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed watching baseball, football and wrestling, and could tell you all the players and what pitches the pitcher would throw. Her favorite teams were the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. Mrs. Owens loved her flowers and gardening.
Survivors include her children, David H. Renshaw, Jr., Sue Geisler and husband, Redds, with whom she lived, Bill E. Renshaw and wife, Bunny, all of Elkton, MD, and George S. Renshaw, Washington, DC; stepdaughter, Linda Stacy, Grundy, VA; siblings, Reds Aliff, Richmond, VA, Roscoe Aliff, and her twin sister with whom she had a special bond, Theda Wallace, both of Alderson, WV; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Owens; first husband, David Renshaw; son, Ronald L. Renshaw; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters.
