Anthony Russell Aliff

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Anthony Russell Aliff, 37, of Indianapolis, formerly of Pineville, went on to a better life on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, following a short illness.

He was born May 18, 1975 in Tyler, Texas, a son of Charles Edward Aliff of Indianapolis, and Debbie Sue Williams Stewart of Pineville.

He was preceded in death by a son Tony Ryan Aliff, grandparents Russell and Elsie Williams and Ulbert and June Aliff, an uncle Doug Aliff and a step brother Brad Stewart.

He was a roofer and a 1993 graduate of Pineville High School.

Survivors include his daughter Ryanna Aliff of Oceana; his mother Debbie Sue (Tommy) Stewart of Pineville; his father Charles Edward (Betty) Aliff of Indianapolis; a brother Jason Edward Aliff and companion Lisa of Pineville; step brother Jason McCory of Indianapolis; step sister Jessica McCroy of Indianapolis; six aunts Liz (James) Mullins of Princeton, Michelle (Tom) Smith of Beaver, Carol Wheaton of Florida, Edna Thomas of Indianapolis, Shirley Aliff of Indianapolis and Patricia Blankenship of North Carolina; an uncle David Aliff of Maryland; two nephews Jaden Aliff and Liam McCory; three nieces Sadie Aliff, Shaelyn Aliff and Allie McCory; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2013 in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Rev. Oza Mullins Jr. officiating. Friends may gather with the family from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home on Sunday. Following the services he will be cremated.

Hubert Lloyd Aliff

Hubert Lloyd Aliff, 81, of Beckley, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at New Prospect Baptist Church at Sweenysburg, with Pastor Gary Williams officiating. In keeping with his wishes he will be cremated. Military graveside honors will be given by the American Legion Honor Guard Post 132 Beckley.

Inurnment will take place in the Williams Family Cemetery at Cirtsville, following the service.

Anna Faye Bowles

DANESE — Anna Faye Bowles, 77, of Danese, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea.

Born May 31, 1935 at Thayer, she was the daughter of the late Oswald and Delphie Berry Adkins.

Anna was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She loved gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Junior Johnson (Jack) Bowles; her daughter Judy Ann Bowles; her granddaughter Tori Danielle Bowles; and a brother Jerry Adkins.

Survivors include two sons Jack Bowles of Danese and Steve Bowles and wife Melissa of Layland; two brothers Jimmy Adkins and wife Paula of Springdale and Donald Adkins of Thayer; three sisters Wilda De La Garza of California, Linda Smith (Arley “Flipper” Tincher) of Oak Hill and Ella Bowles of Green Sulphur; and two  grandsons Colton and M.J. Bowles of Layland.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2013, in the Richmond Cemetery at Sandstone.

WHARNCLIFFE — Mary Tosti Brooks, 83, died Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Service will be 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Diamond Carter and Jim Nagy officiating. Burial will follow in Hatfield Cemetery, Sharon Heights, Hampden, W.Va.

Roxie Lena Casto

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Roxie Lena Casto, 83, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va.

Born on November 15, 1927 in Quinwood, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late James Howard and Stella Harr Smith.

Roxie was a devoted and faithful member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church.  Before retiring from The Greenbrier as a waitress, she also worked at the former Burlington Mills in White Sulphur Springs. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her husband, Earl. Roxie also liked to go to Sherwood Lake, and was very devoted to her brothers, sisters, and all her immediate family.

Preceding her in death other than her parents was her late husband; Earl Casto on September 21, 2012, and brothers; Ernest and Roy Smith.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Janice Deitz of Toledo, Ohio, Patty Hobbs (Bugsy) of White Sulphur Springs, and Becky Walter (Greg) of Roanoke, Va.; brother,  James Smith of Battle Creek, Mich.; two sisters, Viola Brown of Tennessee, and Marie Dancey of Narrows, Va. and a sister-in-law, Lou Clements of White Sulphur Springs, and six grandchildren.

Her memorial service will be 3 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ken Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Mapledale Cemetery, Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs.

Visitation will be on Sunday evening, April 21, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, a donation is suggested to the White Sulphur Springs First Aid Rescue Squad.

ALVON — Norma Colleene Coats, 72, of Alvon, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Alvon United Methodist Church, Alvon, with Rev. Buck Caldwell and Rev. Bobby McClintic officiating. Burial will follow at Mapledale Cemetery, Rt. 92, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral.

William Donald Cochran Sr., 80, of Sprague, died Thursday, April 18th, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital, following a short battle with cancer.

CANVAS — Patsy Jean Hartley, 67, of Canvas, died Friday, April 19, 2013.

In keeping with her wishes the body was cremated.

Athlyn Hatfield

NORTH SPRING — Athlyn Hatfield, age 75, of North Spring, passed away at her residence Wednesday, April 17, 2013, following a short illness.

Athlyn was born, February 26, 1938, a daughter to the late Chess and Pearl Cline Jackson in North Spring.

Athlyn was a homemaker. She was a member of the North Spring Baptist Church and also a member of the Honeysuckle Garden Club.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Billy James Hatfield, a sister Belva Davis; three brothers, Dallas and Burnice Justice, and Tennis Jackson.  

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sharon and husband Gordon Justice of North Spring, Tammy and husband Gary Dillon of  North Spring; one son, Dale E. Hatfield and wife Christine of North Spring; two granddaughters, Amanda and husband Chad Kenneda of North Spring, Andrea and husband T.J. Vance of Indian Creek, W.Va.; three grandsons, Matt and wife M.B. Justice of Gilbert, W.Va., Jon and wife Kayla Hatfield of Hanover, W.Va., Steven Dillon of North Spring; six  great-grandchildren, Chrissy Hatfield, Joseph Hatfield, Ethan Kenneda, Mattie Justice, Jeremiah Vance, Isabella Hatfield; a special friend Frank Cook of North Spring, and a special cousin Lishia Gueli of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jerry Rose and Rev. Eugene Bailey officiating at the North Spring Baptist Church, North Spring. Burial will follow at the Cline Cemetery on Cub Creek, W.Va., at North Spring. Serving as pallbearers will be Frank Cook, Chris Jackson, Steven Dillon, Gary Dillon, Jon Hatfield, Chad Kenneda and Austin Jackson.

Friends may visit with the family at the North Spring Baptist Church, Saturday evening, April 20, 2013, after 6 p.m.  until 10 p.m.

Gary Allen Holmes

OAK HILL — Gary Allen “Sherlock” Holmes, 58, of Oak Hill, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at his home.

Born November 19, 1954 at Gauley Bridge, he was the son of Febe Jennings Holmes of Oklahoma and the late Vernon Holmes.

He worked in maintenance and security and was a U.S. Army veteran.

A brother, Roger Holmes and an aunt, Nellie Holmes preceded him in death.

In addition to his mother, survivors include two sons, Richard Holmes and wife, Olivia of Oak Hill, and Tommy Holmes and wife, Christy of Oak Hill; stepson, Shawn Fields and wife, Kazan of Princeton; brothers, David Holmes of Tennessee, Billy Holmes and Steve Holmes, both of Oklahoma; and sisters, Barbara Berry Hill, Debra Bunnie Yocum and Verna Campbell all of Oklahoma.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Pastor Howard  Calvert officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

COTTAGEVILLE — Alma Ellen Lacy, 87, of Cottageville, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, W.Va., with Pastor Tom Osgood, and the Rev. Gerald Sayre officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville.

Mary Sams

GLEN ROGERS — Mary Sams, 81, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Raleigh General Hospital.

Born October 4, 1931 in McGraws, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ila Mae Shields Allen.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Wyoming County and was of the Christian faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Sams Jr., and a daughter, Debra Lynn Sams.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Judy Day and husband, Benny of Cool Ridge and Patricia Richardson and husband, Bruce of Lake Stephens; eight grandchildren, Daniel Day, Adam Day, Amanda Day, Jennifer Schumann, Heather Richardson, Rebecca Acord, Sarah Permelia, and Justin Richardson; twelve great-grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Letha Allen.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dewey Lowe and Rev. Doug Walls officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service Sunday, at the funeral home.

Franklin Delano Sanger

Franklin Delano Sanger, age 69, of Midway, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday,  April 18, 2013, at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Division.

Born on April 5, 1944 at Glen White, he was the son of the late Carl Sanger and Flossie Norma Harrison Sanger.

Mr. Sanger was a US Army Veteran, and  was a retired coal miner with nearly 40 years of service. He was a member of the Glen View Independent Baptist Church. “Frank“ enjoyed gardening, studying his Bible, and  spending time with his grandchildren.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 41 years, Patricia Cooper Sanger; two daughters, Melissa Sanger of Crab Orchard, and Michelle Sanger and Curtis Johnson of Mount Hope, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Kayla, Mariah, Cierra, and Curtis “Little Man”; four sisters, Betty Crawford and her husband Junior of Cool Ridge, Elva Meador and her husband Frank of Cool Ridge, Melvania Sanger of Crab Orchard, Delores Wagner and her husband Wilmer of New Port, Va.; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Duane Pease and Rev. William O. Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

A viewing will be held  at the funeral home  from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday where friends and family may attend.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Johnson, John Cooper, Butch Cooper, Brett Cooper, “Little John” Cooper, and Danny Nary.
