Linda Turner Brooks

SUMMERLEE — Linda Turner Brooks, 53, of Summerlee, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.

Born on June 15, 1959, at Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Aaron Bruce and Betty Pierce Brooks.

Linda was a loving daughter, mother, and grandmother. She will always live in our hearts.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her ex-husband, William “Tic” Turner; daughter, Tina Lynn Turner; sisters, Marie Buckland, Brenda Maynor, and Sharon Legg; and brothers, Lloyd Brooks and John Brooks.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her daughter, Megan Burton and her husband, Alan; stepson, Jacob Legg; grandchildren, Amalynn Paige Watters and Dustin Seth Watters; aunt, Carolyn Lambert; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Gary “Hippi” Agee, Teresa Young, and Jill Weeks; and she was like a mom to many.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lisa Cochran Carroll

KING GEORGE, Va. — It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved, Lisa Kaye Cochran Carroll, of King George, Va., formerly of Beckley. Lisa died Wednesday, April 10th, 2013, at Duke University Hospital following complications of a lung transplant. She was only 45 years of age.

Lisa was born on the 27th June, 1967, at Beckley. She was the daughter of Thomas Edward Cochran of Beckley and his fiancée, Ellen Allmon. She was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Lilly Cochran, and her stepmother, Patty Basham Cochran, and an infant son, Michael Joseph Carroll, on Dec. 6th, 2000.  

Lisa spent her childhood in Beckley; she was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Lisa furthered her studies at West Virginia Tech, graduating with a degree in computer science engineering. A resident of King George, Va., since 1996, Lisa worked for the federal government on a contract basis with the defense department. Lisa has been attending Solid Rock Baptist Church in King George.

Lisa was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Lisa had a great concern for young people that were in a troubled time in their lives. She will be remembered for taking them into her home to help them “get on the right path.” As Ellen Allmon reflected, “Lisa was a diamond.”

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, James “Jimmy” Carroll; her daughter, Courtney Dawn Venable; Jimmy’s children, Rachel Anne Carroll Lopez and her husband, Salvadore, and their son, Samuel, and James Vaughn Carroll; her brother, Tom Cochran Jr., and his wife, Vicky, of the Eastern San Francisco area in California; Ellen’s sons, Cody and Matthew Allmon; and a host of friends.

On Sunday, April 14th, at 2 p.m. we will remember the life of Lisa with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Denny Greenawalt will be officiating. Lisa will laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Richard W. Cline

FAYETTEVILLE — Richard Wayne Cline Sr., 67, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 15, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Paul Basham officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Monday.

Lena M. Graham

Lena M. Graham, 90, of Beckley, formerly of Pulaski, Va., went peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, April 11, 2013, after a short illness. She has now been made whole again.

Born March 1923, in Pulaski County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jordan Franklin Morris and Lillie Sue Smith Morris. She was a born-again Christian and a member of Newbern Community Christian Church. She loved her church family and enjoyed their visits often. She had previously resided at the Pulaski Retirement Center and the Summit Assisted Living. She loved participating in the church services and playing bingo.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 1976, her daughter Mary Ann Mitchell in 2010 and brothers Roscoe, Bentley and Shirley and sisters Maggie Hall, Metta Gunn, Callie Moore, Ruby Jennings, Claudia Phillips, Kyle Altizer, and Gertrude Stiltner.

She is survived by her daughter Debbie Hodges and her husband Rusty, son-in-law Russell Mitchell, sister-in-law Ruth Elkins, grandchildren Andrea Brush and husband Brad, Patricia Furr and husband Bill, Lisa Rolan and husband Mike, and Rusty Mitchell and wife Lori. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Emma, Noah, Jacob, Ashley, Daniel and Sara and great-great-grandson Ulrich Lee. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews whom she was very close to. A special thanks to those who went the extra mile during these last few years.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Graham will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Seagle Funeral Home in Pulaski, Va. Visitation with the family will be from 2 to 3  p.m., with Pastor Ernie Depew officiating.

Friends and family may gather on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Beckley, for graveside services.

Contributions may be made to the Newbern Community Christian Church in Dublin, Va.

Viola Mae Ledford

OAK HILL — Viola Mae Ledford, age 89, of Oak Hill, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Hidden Valley Health Care Center at Oak Hill.

Born on February 19, 1924, at Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late Pat Bowden and Mahala Richmond Bowden.

Mrs. Ledford was a homemaker, and a member of the Church of God in Erwin, Tennessee. She had made her home at Oak Hill for the past three years, moving from Erwin, Tennessee.

Mrs. Ledford was preceded in death by her husband, George, a daughter Jalta Jane Wood, five brothers, Teddy, Carl, Olza, James, and Andy Bowden, four sisters, Dolly Hatcher, Nellie Wood, Sarah Jane Kazee, and Pauline Edwards.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Harmon and his wife Carolyn of Boise, Idaho, and Charles Harmon and his wife Carol of Johnson City, Tennessee; three daughters, Fern Glenna Harmon of Kingsport, Tennessee, Violet Doolittle and her husband Robert of Scarbro, WV, and Ruth Ellis and her husband Marion of Elizabethon, Tennessee. Two brothers, Alvin Bowden and his wife Carolyn of Danzell, South Carolina, and Carlos Bowden and his wife Bonnie of Palm Bay, Florida. A sister-in-law, Patsy Bowden of Winston-Salem, NC. A sister Lorine Shumate of Christiansburg, Virginia. 21 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, and  friends.

Mrs. Ledford loved the Lord, traveling, sewing, quilting, and listening to gospel music. She loved her family and enjoyed having them come to visit.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Becky Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

FAYETTEVILLE — Laura Wilma Lucas Lilly, 89, of Fayetteville, died Friday, April 12, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with the Rev. Mark Wood officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Norman Stanley ‘Buck’ Milam

Norman Stanley “Buck” Milam, 70, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Bowers Hospice House.

Born March 21, 1943, at Arnett, W.Va., he was the son of the late Earl and Ella Mae Alderman Milam. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Marie Milam.

Buck was a retired Preparation Plant Foreman for Peabody Coal. He was a member of Cross Point Church of God. He loved golf, fishing and NASCAR.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Beverly Lacek and husband Matt of Beckley; grandchildren, Kelsey, Jacob and Joey Lacek of Beckley; brothers, John Milam and wife Lila of Panama City, Fla., Robert Milam and wife Pam of Pettus, W.Va., Joe Milam and wife Suki of San Antonio, Texas, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, 800 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, with Pastor Vondie L. Cook II officiating. Burial will follow in Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until service time on Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Lacek, Lee Milam, Joey and Jacob Lacek, Jacob and Kaleb Milam.

LOGAN — Beatrice “Bea” N. Orr, 82, of Logan, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013.

A public visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Honaker Funeral Home. A celebration of Bea’s life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 622 Stratton St., Logan. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Woodmere Memorial Park, 2701 Washington Blvd., Huntington.

Wayne Theodore Ramsey

Wayne Theodore Ramsey, age 62, of Daniels, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at his home.      

Born on June 12, 1950, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Theodore Ramsey and Helen Myers Ramsey.

Wayne was a disabled American Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He had attended the Bellepoint Baptist Church in Hinton. Wayne was a resident of Hinton up until two years ago, then moving to Daniels. He was an avid car enthusiast, enjoyed classic rock and roll music, and was a “history nut.” The past few years he had spent much time with his granddaughter Kara Ramsey.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Ramsey and his wife Dianna of Shady Spring, and Kris Ramsey of Daniels. Four grandchildren, Kara, Ava, Autumn, and Aaidan. Two brothers, Phillip Ramsey of Peterstown, and Byron Dean Ramsey of San Antonio, Texas.

Committal Services will be conducted at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va., on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at the cemetery.

Delbert Ray Smith

RAINELLE — Delbert Ray Smith, 71, of Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, following an ATV accident near his home on Coal Hollow Road.

Born April 17, 1941, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Edward Henry and Etha Allen Smith.

Delbert was a hardworking miner, never able to just sit still. He loved the outdoors. Delbert was a loving husband, father and grandfather who really enjoyed the grandbabies. He was a member of the Springdale Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Donald Richard Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Helen Helmick Smith; three sons Michael Smith (Brandi) of Dunnellon, Fla., Ray Smith (Kyra) of North Baltimore, Ohio, and Christopher Smith (Nicole) of Nitro; three daughters Cindy Persinger of King, N.C., Sham Smith (Kara) of Dunbar and Kimberly Goehle (Mark) of Lexington, N.C.; a brother Lacy Smith (Bonnie) of Rainelle; two sisters Drema Fewell (Ed) of Sam Black and Macy Smith of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren Matthew Nottingham, Corey Hizer, Lily Smith, Sabrina Goehle, Jason Persinger, Kenny Ray Smith, Isaiah and Madison Smith; and three great-granddaughters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Vince Deeds officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Crystal ‘Michelle’ Williams

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Crystal “Michelle” Williams, 43, of White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, with Pastor Don Elswick officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will follow at the Fortner Cemetery, Rock Camp.

Mary Marie Withrow

Our precious Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Mary Marie Withrow went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at 1 a.m., at the Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born on January 22, 1913, in Carlisle, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph John Bednarski and Filemina Baron Bednarski.

Mrs. Withrow was a member of the Saint Francis deSales Catholic Church in Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Robert Withrow, on December 11, 1988, by two brothers, Joseph and Frank, and by a sister Anna Dickerson.

Frank and Mary Withrow were married on July 26, 1933. They met while in grade school and at the age of nineteen they were married. It truly was a happy marriage that lasted for 55 years. In 1956 Frank and Mary opened an Auto Repair Shop in Beckley. Frank retired in September 1980 and the business is still being operated by his daughter and son-in-law Mary and Darrold Wickline as Withrow’s Auto Service Inc.

After retirement Frank and Mary enjoyed traveling and spending time in Florida.

This year on January 22, Mary celebrated her 100th Birthday with a party at her home at Flat Top Lake with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

We would like to thank our neighbors, the Castrodale family, for their phone calls and the beautiful spring and summer flowers they would bring. Also a special thanks to the Ken Litton family who always offered their help and last but not least to the Jimmy Lucas family for always keeping the driveway clear of snow in the winter.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Withrow Farley (son-in-law Wayne C. Farley who passed away in 1978) of Flat Top Lake, with whom she made her home; Mary Wickline and her husband Darrold of Beckley. Grandchildren, Wayne C. Farley Jr. and his wife Melinda Ennis Farley of Roanoke, Virginia. Mary Gail Farley Dixon and her husband Connard Dixon of Danese, WV. Matthew Alan Farley and his fiancée Deanna Barker of Beckley. Linda Wickline Harper and her husband Walt of Beckley, Venecia Wickline Canterberry and her husband Mike of Beckley, Emily Wickline Hanft and her husband Ed of Bethlehem, Pa., Darrold “Rocky” Wickline of Beckley.

Great-grandchildren, Mike, Jon, Greg and his wife Alexis White, all of Beckley, Mallory and Chase Canterberry of Beckley, Haley Canterberry and her husband Dave Edwards of Beckley, Jennifer Cerruto and her husband Paul of East Orange, N.J., and Ricky Mosel of New Jersey. Great-great-grandchildren, Owen and Jeremy Cerruto, Jay Canterberry, Sofi and Zoe White.

Mrs. Withrow was the last surviving member of her immediate family, with the exception of brother-in-law James Kirby of Beckley.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at the Saint Francis deSales Catholic Church on Monday, April 15, 2013, at noon with Monsignor Samuel Sacus as the Celebrant. A Rite of Committal will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends may call at the church from 11 a.m. until noon on Monday.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
