James A. Bailey Jr.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, our beloved James “Jim” Bailey Jr., of Crane Street, Beckley, passed away at his home. He was 63 years of age.

Born on August 5, 1950, at Beckley, Jim was the son of the late James and Mabel Bailey Sr. In addition to his parents his wife Sandra passed away on Sept. 1, 2013.

Jim enjoyed spending his time reading and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters Angela D. Daly and husband Dustin of Evansville, Ind., Amanda R. Bailey of Beckley, Jamielee Bailey of Beckley and Misty Rabago of Winter Garden, Fla., grandchildren, Caden Gainer, Victor Rabago, Christian Gonzalez, Abi Gonzalez and a grandchild to be born this summer, brother, Bill and his wife Betty of Tavares, Fla., sisters, Carol Sue Smith of Beckley, Cathy Smith of Beckley, Patty Nicholson and her husband Jim of Huntsville, Ala., and a host of nieces and nephews.

On Sunday, Feb. 9th, at 1 p.m. there will be a “Service of Remembrance” for Jim at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Paul Zutaut will be officiating. Jim will be laid to rest beside his beloved Sandra in the St. Sebastian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour.

Mary L. Baldwin

GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — Mary L. Baldwin, 89, of Gallipolis, Ohio, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014, at Arbors of Gallipolis. 

She was born July 18, 1924, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., daughter of the late Lester Charles and Lillie Mae Clemmons Scott. She married Phil B. Baldwin and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2003.

Mary was a retired nurse’s aide from the Gallipolis Developmental Center. She attended Elizabeth Chapel Church and was a member of Eastern Star Chapter #134, Racine, Ohio.

Surviving are her son, Lacy Charles (Janet) Baldwin of Gallipolis, Ohio; her daughter, Phyllis Louise “Susie” LeBlanc of Chillicothe, Ohio; her daughter-in-law, Loretta Baldwin of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Flint of Clintonville, W.Va.; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Phil Bently Baldwin, Mary was preceded in death by a son, James Douglas Baldwin, a grandson, Lacy Charles Baldwin Jr., four brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 11, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Willis Funeral Home, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Wednesday, February 12, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, WV. 

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home with Mike Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Helen Vipperman Bryant Cline, 91, of Sophia, passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Claris Marie Lilly Cox

CLAYTON — Claris Marie Lilly Cox, 85, of Clayton, formerly of Nimitz, died Thursday,  February 6, 2014, at the home of her daughter at Clayton following a long illness.

Born May 24, 1928, at Lilly, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jefferson Levi Bunyon and Mary Catherine Lilly Lilly.

Ms. Cox was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Summers County Hospital in Hinton with 25 years of service and also a homemaker. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Cecil Cox, her second husband, Russell Harold Cox, two great-grandchildren and 15 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include five daughters, Wilma Richmond and husband Rodney of Clayton, Mary Sue Ferguson of Salisbury, N.C., Myrtle DeMarino and husband Larry of Nimitz, Deloras Basham and husband Benny of Jumping Branch and Virginia Cook and husband Oley of Nimitz; two sons, Robert Dean Cox and wife Cindy of Dover, Del., and Cecil Cox and wife Anita of Elk Knob, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Franklin Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Josiah Lilly Cemetery on Ellison Ridge. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be: Stanley Ferguson, Donnie Ferguson, Gary Basham, Bobby Cox, Eddie Cook, Roy Rutherford Jr., Willy (Bill) Rutherford, Matthew Cox, David Spade, Dalton Spade and Kyle Gillis.

Howard Thomas ‘Tommy’ Crook

JUMPING BRANCH — Howard Thomas “Tommy” Crook, 70, of Jumping Branch, went home to be with the Lord following a long illness on Friday, February 7, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.

He was born May 16, 1943, at Jumping Branch, the oldest son of the late Howard Taft Crook and Myrtle Alice Irwin.

He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Jumping Branch Tabernacle and Mary Jane Memorial.

Tommy was a truck driver and business owner. He worked at Crook’s Produce for over 30 years and was a self-employed truck driver until he became disabled in 2000. 

“Tommy was a devoted father and doting grandfather.”

He is preceded in death by one son, James Thomas Crook.

He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Mary Frances Crook; one son, Jeffrey Thomas Crook and wife Cherie, of Bristow, Va., one daughter, Diane Crook-Nichols and husband, Douglas, of Saint Cloud, Fla.; four grandchildren, Madison Ellee Nichols, Auburn Grace Nichols, of Saint Cloud, Fla., Noah Thomas Crook, Joshua Ronald Crook, of Bristow, Va.; two sisters, Ramona Kay Bennett of Bellpoint, W.Va., Lucretia Meador of Woodstock, Ga., three brothers, Robert (Bobby) Ferrell Crook and companion Helen, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Roger Dale Crook and wife Sue, of Jumping Branch, and Ronald (Ronnie) Dare Crook and wife Maudie, of Charlotte, Mich. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Jumping Branch Tabernacle with Pastors Ernest Calfee and Elmo Alderman officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Crook Family Cemetery in Jumping Branch.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

ALDERSON — Guy Rodney Edward Edds, 89, of Flat Mountain, Alderson, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Flat Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Flat Mountain, Alderson, with Pastor Dave Spencer and Pastor Youel Altizer officiating. Patricia Lee ‘Trish’ Kerbawy

Patricia L. “Trish” Kerbawy passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital on February 3, 2014.

Born on August 7, 1957, Patricia was the precious daughter of the late Hubert and Helen Buckland.

Patricia was also preceded in death by a brother John Buckland and a sister Charlotte Richmond.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Randy Kerbawy, and son, Phillip Kerbawy, daughter, Kelli Kerbawy, sons Joshua Kerbawy and his wife Jessica, Matthew Kerbawy and his wife Anna. She will be fondly missed by her grandchildren, Brandon, Maicey, Charlotte, Molly, Emmery, Merrily and Piper, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia is also survived by a brother, Troy Buckland, sisters, Reba Elmore and Rebecca Bragg.

A Memorial Service will be held a later date.

Roy V. Shumate

RAVENCLIFF — Roy V. Shumate, 84, of Ravencliff, went to be with the Lord February 6, 2014, after a long illness.

Born October 27, 1929, in Saulsville, he was the son of the late Ted and Laura Shumate.

Roy retired from Columbia Gas where he worked for 30 years and was a member of the Ravencliff Church of God for 29 years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory; three brothers, Frank, Carl, and Roland; one sister, Pauline.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Rosa E. Shumate; two daughters, Laura A. Duncan and Frances M. Hill (Jerry); two granddaughters, Beth Duncan and Andrea Shumate (Larry); one grandson, Roy Duncan; one sister, Freda Connor (Leroy); one brother, Ted Shumate (Beatrice); special nephew, Michael D. Coleman (Kelly); and many other dear relatives and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Phillip Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in the Lafferty Cemetery, McGraws.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Irene Mildred Taylor

Irene Mildred Taylor, age 87, of Shady Spring, passed away at her home on Tuesday,  February 4, 2014.

Born on August 24, 1926, at Shelbyville, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Pearlie and Louise Polly Deweese.

Mrs. Taylor was a homemaker, and was of the Baptist faith. She had lived at Shady Spring most of her life. Mrs. Taylor enjoyed camping, bowling, bluegrass music, and playing bingo. Mrs. Taylor also provided foster care for many young children several years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Taylor, in 1981, her longtime companion, Glenville Richmond, in 1997, by her daughter, June Barnett, in 2006, and by a brother, Harold Deweese.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Tommy Jay Gassaway of Carson City, Nev., Robert Schmahl of Shady Spring, Virginia York and her husband Mark of Decatur, Ill., Susie Havener and her husband Leonard of Decatur, Ill., Chris Cernuto and her husband Mike of Crab Orchard, a foster son, Joey Redden of Beckley.

The family would also like to recognize her longtime partner and friend, Hubert Richards of Shady Spring, a special tribute to Irene’s caregiver Sharon Holdren of Shady Spring, to whom the family gives much thanks.

Grandchildren, Travis Gassaway and Troy Gassaway of Nevada, Robert Schmahl Jr. and his wife Katie of Kansas, Nikki Schmahl of Florida, Vanessa McClelland and her husband Brett of Illinois, Kyle York and his wife Laura of Illinois, Shelley Gregg and her husband Tom of Illinois, Tricia Norman of Florida, Butch Canant and Chuck Canant of Oklahoma. Great-grandchildren, Xavier, Siane, Matt, and Rosemarie Schmahl, Brittany and Brandon McClelland, Emma York, Rachel and Sarah Barter, Colton Kolbeck, Kaitlin Havener, Emy and Bella Gassaway, Chance and Shylee Schmahl. Her special pet, her dog Bailey.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Bob Stoddard officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, W.Va.  Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

James Milton Turner

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — James Milton Turner, 89, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Summers County, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Born October 15, 1924, in Hinton, he was the oldest son of the late Oscar Esco Turner and Norene Gertrude Williams Turner.

Mr. Turner grew up in Hinton and Buck, W.Va.

He was a graduate of Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Mich., and was a tool maker who retired from General Motors, Detroit, Mich., in 1983. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II from 1942-45 in combat in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He had resided in Fort Wayne since 2001.

Survived by one daughter, Pamela Diann and husband James Lewis of Fort  Wayne; one sister, Bette Joyce and husband William “Buck” Haley of Richmond, Va.; several nieces and  nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife Patty Ann Meadows in August 2005, one brother, Oscar Adrian “Bud” Turner, two sisters, Emma Jean Durham and Maebell Garten.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Pete Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery at Forest Hill. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
