Mildred Faye    Johnson Acord

OCEANA — Mildred Faye Johnson Acord, 85, of Oceana, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, Kopperston, with Pastor James Hamrick and the Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family after 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the church.

BAILEYSVILLE — Everal Collins, 65, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jay Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Cheryl Ann Combs

Cheryl Ann Combs, age 43, of Beckley, passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

Born on August 3, 1970, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Jack and Brenda Gillenwalters Combs of Beckley.

Cheryl was a former employee of Raleigh General Hospital as a CNA. She was a member of the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church, and was a lifelong Beckley resident.

Surviving other than her parents include two sons, Robbie Powell and Cody Powell, both of Beckley, and a brother James Combs of Beckley.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Dean Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Friends visited with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be James Combs, Robbie, and Cody Powell, Dave Williams, Grant Lilly, and C.J. Cocus.

Dora Conner, 83, of Beckley, formerly of Cool Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014.

Ruby Jean Cook

RAINELLE — Ruby Jean Cook, 84, of Rainelle, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in the Heartland of Rainelle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Born September 22, 1929, in East Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late Addison Wesley and Della Burns Loudermilk.

Ruby Jean worked as a secretary for many years at the Rainelle Department Store, until its closing. She then worked as secretary for the First Baptist Church in Rainelle, where she was a member. Ruby Jean enjoyed cooking and working crossword puzzles. She was known for her sense of humor.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her children Cheryl Jean Cook and Lloyd Cook; and 2 sisters Faye White and Dorothy Spencer.

Survivors include 2 nephews Tom Spencer and wife Barb of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Don White and wife Brenda of Charleston; 1 niece Yvonne Rundell of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and a special friend and neighbor Connie Yearego Fugate.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 3, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., with Pastor Dana Gatewood officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

David Lloyd Craig

June 27, 1940 – January 31, 2014

NEWARK, Ohio — A funeral service for David Lloyd Craig, 73, of Newark, OH, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at the Licking Valley Church of Christ, 1578 Dayton Road NE, Newark, OH, with Pastors Gus Andrews and Ronnie Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow at Wilson Cemetery.

Mr. Craig passed away on January 31, 2014, at his residence. He was born on June 27, 1940, to the late Loyd Mark and Ada Leota (James) Craig in Beckley, WV.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Zelma J. (Taylor); sons, David Mark (Kristen) and James Franklin (Melissa) Craig; grandchildren, Rebecca, Allison, Amy, Joshua, Ashleigh, Jeremy and Bethany; sister, Dorothy Lee Adelman; niece, Patricia (Jeff) Almond; and a large extended family and many very special friends.

Mr. Craig retired in 2000 from Kaiser Aluminum after 36 years of service. He was a member of the Licking Valley Church of Christ where he served as Deacon and enjoyed helping with various youth groups. He enjoyed all family-oriented activities including bowling, fishing and camping.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark, OH.

Ona L. Dempsy, 77, of Cool Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014.

Hazel Mae Elswick

KOPPERSTON — Hazel Mae Elswick, 83, of Kopperston, WV, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, WV.

She was born October 6, 1930, in Mercer County, WV, a daughter of the late Felix and Edda Mae Sexton.

Hazel was a member of the Bible Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 40 years James Alfred “Pug” Elswick; a son James Allen “Pug” Elswick; and a son-in-law Jimmie Daniels.

Survivors include two daughters Patricia (James Ray) Rose of Ghent, and Deborah Daniels of Cyclone; a son Jeffrey “Little Pug” (Rita) Elswick of Crouches Farm; two brothers Fred Sexton, and Ben Sexton all of North East Maryland; 8 grandchildren Melissa Whetzel, Kim Harper, Jennifer Gunnoe, Laura Lambert, Rebecca Perry, Amy Hollister, Jarried Elswick, and Kyle Elswick; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild Caelyn Sophia Hagerty due in June; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Bible Baptist Church, Kopperston, WV, with Rev. Earl Brewer and Mervin White officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, WV. Friends may gather with the family at 12 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2014, until time of service at the church. Margaret Louise Fannon, 79, of Ballard, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014.

Clarence Calvin ‘Gabby’ Hayes Jr.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Clarence Calvin “Gabby” Hayes, Jr., 75, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014, in the Beckley VA Hospital, following a short illness.

Born September 7, 1938, in Lockbridge, he was the son of the late Clarence and Delpha McGraw Hayes, Sr.

Gabby worked as a salesman and was a member of the Lick Creek Baptist Church at Green Sulphur Springs. He enjoyed woodworking for others and could never fish enough. Gabby served in the U.S. Air Force just before the Viet Nam War. He never met a stranger and loved unconditionally.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Adkins Hayes; one son Mike Hayes and his wife Rama of Meadow Bridge; one daughter Javeanie Meadows and husband Don of Meadow Bridge; 3 sisters Zeda Lavender of Flushing, Michigan, Rita Thomas and husband Chuck of Otisville, Michigan, and Gena Carrier and husband Dave of Houston, Texas; one grandson Shaun Meadows and wife Jamie of Beckley and one granddaughter Monica Meadows of Meadow Bridge.

The body was cremated and there will be no service.

BUCKEYE — Jeffrey Allan Hunt, 44, of Buckeye died Jan. 30, 2014.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mae Ernestine Martin

Mae Ernestine Martin, age 81, of Coal City, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born on the 7th day of November in 1932 in Winding Gulf, WV; a daughter to the late William Carr and Ethel Mae Barlow Carr.

Ms. Martin was a graduate of Stoco High School Class of 1950; also known for being in ministry for over 30 years as Pastor Martin. She served her God and her community at Shady Spring Pentecostal Holiness Church. She enjoyed reading her Bible, playing her Bible cross word puzzles, and was into crafts early in her life before she fell ill. Her children, grandchildren, and a host of friends were cherished close to her heart and she loved them dearly. Ms. Martin loved people and rarely met a stranger. We could all take example from her as being a good Christian and caring for those around her. Recently, she received her first dog within the last year whom she grew attached to; his name is Benji. For all who had the pleasure of knowing Ms. Martin, your life will forever be touched in knowing her and she will be sadly missed.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Orie Martin, who was the love of her life; brothers, Leonard (Louise) Carr, and Joseph (Rosella) Carr; and a sister, Mary Dixon.

Those left behind to carry on her legacy include her children, Larry Martin and wife Shirley, Patsy Dunigan and husband Ray, and Susan Canterbury and husband Evert “Buddy,” all of Coal City; brother-in-law, John Dixon of Coal City; and  she is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends and church family.

Services to celebrate the life of Mae Ernestine Martin will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Prosperity with Rev. Paul Chapman, Rev. Benny Harper, and Rev. Danny Helmandollar officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Prosperity.

Her grandsons will have the honor of serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Prosperity.

Laura Beth Self

FAYETTEVILLE — Laura Beth Self, age 26, of Fayetteville, died on Thursday, January 30, 2014, from injuries received in an accident on Pea Ridge Road, Oak Hill.

Born June 15, 1987, in Winston-Salem, NC, she was the daughter of Timothy Mark and Tammy Lyanell Persinger Self of Fayetteville.

Laura was a 2005 graduate of Fayetteville High School and attended WVU Tech and Mountain State University in the Criminal Justice Program. She was an EMT and former EMS worker for 7 years and was currently a dispatcher at the Fayette County 911 Center. She was preceded in death by 4 great-grandfathers, by 3 great-grandmothers and 3 infant cousins.

Survivors in addition to her parents include a sister, Tiffany Self Humphery and husband Roger Lee of Fayetteville, and very special baby sister, Kristen Lyanell Self of Fayetteville, paternal grandparents, Zane and Evelyn Self of Fayetteville, maternal grandfather, Richard Persinger of Clearwater, FL, maternal grandparents, Lennis Persinger Redwine and Lavon Redwine of Crossville, TN, two great-great-grandmothers, Minnie Etheleen Martin Persinger of Glasgow and Cora Davenport Maynard of Crossville, TN. Also surviving are very dear close friend Sarah Hill and many aunts, uncles, other close friends and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, with Pastor Larry Humphrey officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Viola Sheets

Viola Sheets, age 82, of Beckley, died January 28, 2014. She was born on July 28, 1931, in Montebello, Va. She was the daughter of the late B.H. Campbell and Nellie Layton Campbell.

Viola attended schools in Bramwell, and retired from G.C. Murphy Co. with 30 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ray Sheets. They were residents of Stephenson, W.Va., for more than 50 years until his death in 2008. Also preceding her in death, her son-in-law Alan Holliday. Brothers and spouses, Hunter and Edna Campbell, Ralph and Betty Campbell. Sisters and spouses Louise Franklin, Frances and Clarence Whittaker, Jane and Frank Fernandez, and many of her Sheets family.

Viola is survived by her daughters, Brenda Sheets Benedum and husband Jim Benedum of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Kathy Holliday of Beckley, with whom she made her home. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jaimie Benedum-Scott and Walter, Alan J. Holliday II and Jill, Courtney Benedum, Michael Holliday and Cristal, and Kelsey Benedum. Also her great-grandsons Tyler Holliday, Walt Scott IV, Grayson Holliday, Myles Ray Scott, Landan and Dylan. She is also survived by her sister Evelyn Bailey and husband Paul Bailey, sisters-in-law Ruby Suits and Roy and Hazel Hollars, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Mother’s legacy will be her unwavering faith in God and her unconditional love for her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Tommy Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton, W.Va.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at the funeral home.

RAINELLE — Geneva Ellen Simms, 83, of Rainelle, WV, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Greenbrier Manor.

Born March 22, 1930, at Meadow Creek, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Marie Gunter of Lockbridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bradford Simms, a son, Thomas Simms, and a daughter, Thelma. Also preceding were one Sister, Della Richmond, and one brother, Homer Gunter.

Survivors include one daughter: Cheryl Persinger (Mike) of McRoss, WV; Two sons: Sherman Simms of Rainelle, WV, and Terry Simms (Arnethia) of Bellwood; One sister: Flo Forren of Lewisburg, WV; One brother: George Gunter of Lockbridge, WV; Four Grandchildren: Shawn Persinger and fiancée Brittany Matheney of Rainelle, WV, Melodie Richmond and Jeff of Meadow Bridge, WV, Kara Carr of Rainelle, WV, and Michael Simms; 3 great-grandchildren: Joshua, Arianna and Sierra Richmond, all of Meadow Bridge, WV.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel of Rainelle, WV, with Pastor Bennie Kenney officiating.
