Margie R. Beckett
On Thursday, September 2, 2010, Margie R. Beckett, 84, of Crab Orchard, joined her beloved husband and became a member of the heavenly choir. Born February 12, 1926, in Hinton, WV, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Theodore and Luda Mae Yancey Smith.
Margie was a former secretary retiring from the VA Medical Center after 33 years of service. She was an organist/pianist and member of the choir at Crab Orchard Baptist Church.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond D. Beckett, beloved grandson, Chad Thomas, brother, Lester Smith, sister, Lois Smith, and her beloved sister and lifetime friend, Glenna Beckett.
Survivors include a son, R. Dean Beckett, II, and wife Sarita of Crab Orchard; daughters, Janet Thomas and husband Jim of Chillicothe, OH, Barbara Gerlach and husband Stephen of Grandview; grandchildren, Todd Thomas and wife Amy, Paul Thomas and wife Missy, Allison Butler and husband Chris, Scott Gerlach and wife Meridith, Heather Gragg and husband Bill, Jocelyn Bond and husband Phillip, Justine Beckett; 13 great-grandchildren and her beloved pet and companion, Casey.
A celebration of Margie’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Sisson officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the church from noon until service time on Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Todd Thomas, Scott Gerlach, Paul Thomas, Chris Butler, Bill Gragg, Phillip Bond, Steven Beckett. Honorary pallbearers will be Hartsel Beckett, Tom Beckett, Mike Beckett, John Goodman and Joey Beckett.

FAYETTEVILLE — Tammie Lynn Wheeler Brown, 47, of Fayetteville passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.
Born on October 16, 1962, at Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. Wheeler and Geraldine Patricia “Pat” Wheeler Rodes.
Tammie loved to watch baseball and softball and she loved spending time at the field.
Left to cherish her memory include her husband, William David Brown of Fayetteville; daughter, Hannah Brown of Fayetteville; son, Austin Brown of Fayetteville; brothers, Steve Wheeler and wife Linda, Thomas C. Wheeler and wife, Iris, David Wheeler and wife, Paula, and Jonathan Wheeler and wife, Brandy; sister, Sandra Bias; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 6, 2010, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Delbert Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Aurelia L. ‘Raya’ McDowell Carson
Ms. Aurelia L. “Raya” McDowell Carson departed this life and entered eternal rest on Sunday, August 29, 2010.
Ms. Carson was born on February 4, 1947, to the late Dewey B McDowell and Amy Winston Phillips.
Ms. Carson, more affectionately known as “Raya,” was a graduate of Stratton High School. She received a vocational certificate from Raleigh County Vocational Technical Center for Adult Typing and an associate degree in Medical Secretarial Services from Beckley College.
She was a former member of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church and Welcome Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn C. McDowell.
Left to cherish precious memories are a son, William (Lisa) Carson; two brothers, Dewey (Revella) McDowell and Robert McDowell, both of Beckley; sister, Bishop Eunice (Roger) Jones of Beckley; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 12 noon Monday, September 6, 2010, at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 Eighth St., Beckley, with Bishop David Allen, Bishop Fred T. Simms and Rev. Thomas Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial park, Beckley.

Mason Lee Furrow, 4, of Shady Spring was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Duke University, Durham, NC, following a 4-month battle with cancer.
Born November 28, 2005, in Beckley, he was the son of Ron and Jamie Richmond Furrow. Mason attended Beaver First Baptist Church. Mason enjoyed farming and riding 4-wheelers and hunting.
Mason was preceded in death by maternal great-grandparents Earl and Maye Richmond and Jeff Bennett; paternal great-grandparents Roy McGraw and Estel and Louise Furrow; cousin Madison Furrow; great-aunt Betty Bennett and great-uncle Glenville Richmond.

Eugene James Hayes
RAINELLE — Eugene James Hayes, 84, of Rainelle, passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Heartland of Rainelle following a long illness.
Born October 7, 1925, in Charmco, he was a son of the late James Harvey and Effie Maxine Burdette Hayes.
He was an ironworker who worked building bridges. He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Joda I. Hayes of Rainelle; a stepdaughter, Dorcus McBrayer of Rugby, Tenn.; a son, Jeff L. Hayes and his wife, Sheryl D., of Bedford, Va.; four stepsons, Bruce Spade of Stafford, Va., David McCoy of Rainelle, Donald McCoy of Mt. Storm, and Mitchell McCoy of Germany; two sisters, Kitty Fortune of Springfield, Va., and Margaret Campbell of Tempe, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Chris E. Hayes of Oxford, N.C., Brad A. Hayes of Bedford, Va., Noah M. Hayes of Bedford, Va., and Sara G. Hayes, also of Bedford, Va.; as well as other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at the End of the Trail Cemetery in Clintonville with Rev. Gary Walker officiating.
The body is to be cremated.

Guy Harold Holliday
MOUNT HOPE — Guy Harold Holliday, 77, of Mount Hope passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Beckley V.A.M.C.
Born September 10, 1932, at Lookout, the son of the late Virgil and Eva Adwell Holliday.
Guy was a conductor for the Norfolk and Western Railway with over 23 years of service and was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Holliday, and sisters Fleta Bryant and Ina Parrish and an infant brother, Merle Holliday.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 47 years, Betty Eans Holliday, a sister, Frances Phillips of Appomattox, VA, and several nieces and nephews.
His remains rest at the High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1435 E. Main St., Oak Hill, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and where the funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Carlyle Blomme officiating.
Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

Teddy Eugene Lively
Teddy Eugene Lively, age 60, of Shady Spring, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at his home following a sudden illness.
Born on August 11, 1950, in Oceana, W.Va., he was the son of the late Aileen Dickinson Lively and Leslie Lively.
After graduating from high school he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. After his years in service, he attended Bluefield State College and worked as a coal miner with Eastern Coal Company for several years. He then decided to carry out his dream to own his own business and opened Lively’s Exxon with his brother Alan.
He then ventured out on his own with L&M Exxon, Daniel’s Exxon, and Morgan’s Car Wash. After getting these businesses established he joined R.T. Rogers Oil Company as general manager which he was doing at the time of his death. During his life he was not only a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he was also one you could always turn to in a time of need. He would lighten up the spirits of many with his fun-loving personality. To know him was to love him.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Alan Lively and his wife Terri Lively, and another sister-in-law Billie Lively, and a niece, Racheal Bailey Meadows.
Surviving are his loving wife of 17 years, Linda Manning Lively, and their daughter Morgan Lively, both at their home. Daughters, Leslie Ann Lively Minor of Cool Ridge, and Monica Lively Moss of Daniels, a son, Chris Bolen of Shady Spring. His grandchildren, Cody Minor, Megan Moss, Breeann Moss, Allie Minor, Zoey Bolen, Zayne Bolen, and Makensea Worley. Teddy is also survived by his brother, Robert Lively of Toms Brook, Va., along with several nieces, nephews, many friends, and extended family members.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Mr. Lively will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Steve Rector officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, W.Va.
Friends called at the funeral home from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be Greg Rogers, Mike Ballard, Bill Combs, Kevin Ballard, John Graham, and Steve Day.

John ‘Johnny’ Scarbrough
OAK HILL — John Melvin “Johnny” Scarbrough, 65, of Oak Hill passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010, as a result of an automobile accident.
Born on March 25, 1947, at Beckwith, he was the son of the late Wesley Edmond Scarbrough and Margaret Frances Simms Scarbrough.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Darrell Scarbrough, Charles Scarbrough Larry Scarbrough, and Gary Scarbrough; one sister, June Sutton; and grandson-in-law, Joshua Toma.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his son, John M. Scarbrough, Jr.; daughters, Connie Scarbrough Everett of Oak Hill, and Leslie Tweedie and husband, Jay, of Beckwith; four brothers, Kenneth Scarbrough, Sherman Max Scarbrough, Ernest “Ricky” Scarbrough, and Michael Scarbrough; two sisters, Karen Slaughter and Marilyn Richards; girlfriend, Christine Houck; grandchildren, Cynthia Houck-Toma, W. Wesley Everett, Treasa Tweedie-Sullivan, Samantha Scarbrough, Trisha McMillan-Hancock, and Dezirae F. Carlton Revere Spicer Jr.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Carlton Revere Spicer Jr., 65, died September 2, 2010, at his home in Fredericksburg, Va., following an extended illness.
He worked as an educator for 40 years. According to his wishes, his body will be donated for research and organ recovery to the University of Maryland Anatomical Registry.
Mr. Spicer was born October 23, 1944, in Gauley Bridge, WV. He graduated from Gauley Bridge High School, Glenville State College, and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from West Virginia University. He taught business, coached high school basketball, and was employed as a school principal in Fayette County, West Virginia. He also worked as a school administrator at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia. Carlton served as a facilitator with the North Central Accreditation Commission for the West Virginia State Board of Education. After moving to Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 2000, Mr. Spicer served as a high school administrator at Chancellor High School and Riverbend High School in Spotsylvania County. He retired in 2007. During his retirement years he enjoyed working at Macy’s.
Carlton was a Christian, who loved God and considered his family his greatest blessing. He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.
Carlton was an avid sports fan. He excelled in track and basketball, having played in high school and college. His ability to run and score earned him multiple awards. He was also an accomplished drummer, earning all-state recognition in high school.
Mr. Spicer was preceded in death by his parents, Carlton and Grace Spicer, his sisters Betty Kania and Doris Waldeck, his brother James Spicer, and his niece Jennifer Vincent.
He is survived by his loving wife Rebekah, children Johna Rutledge, Grace Synan and her husband Clay, and Carlton Revere “Chip” Spicer III. He has four grandchildren, Jordyn, Judson, Jaren, and Brooks. In addition, he is survived by siblings JoAnn Vincent, Marita Reed and her husband Tom, and Steve Spicer and his wife Carole. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Joe Kania, Bill Waldeck, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors at their home on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service in his honor will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 811 W. Evergreen Avenue Suite 303, Chicago, IL 60642.

Omar Thompson, 27, of Beckley died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at Charleston Area Medical Center.
