Vivian ‘Vicky’ Berger

BOOMER — Vivian “Vicky” Berger, 53, of Boomer, died Saturday, May 3, 2014.

A mini service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 9, 2014, at First Baptist Church Boomer, Boomer.

Funeral service will be 12 noon Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Heart of God Ministries, 1703 S. Kanawha Street, Beckley with Bishop Fred T. Simms officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

Betty J. Bowman

ELGIN, S.C. — On Sunday, May 4th, 2014, our most cherished, Betty Jean Bowman of Elgin, formerly of Bolt, passed away in a South Carolina hospital following a short illness. She was 49 years of age.

Betty was one of seven children. Born on April 27th, 1965, in Beckley, she was the daughter of  the late James Hubert and Ora Blanch Summers Bowman. Her brothers, Paul Bowman and Roger Cyrus have preceded her in death. Her brothers, Ricky, Rocky and Jimmy Bowman of Glen Daniel and Bobby Cyrus of Elgin survive her. 

Betty loved to be outdoors. 

Betty was the loving mother to her two children, Stephanie Fretel of Bolt and Danny Bailey Jr. of Dameron. The father of her children, Danny Bailey Sr. survives as well. There are several neices and nephews who she loved dearly. Betty’s faithful canine companions, “Her babies” Dixie and Dozer meant a great deal to her. 

On Friday, May 9th, at 1 p.m. we will honor the life of Betty Jean Bowman with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service hour. Betty will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. 

Flowers are a wonderful gesture, but due to Betty’s unexpected illness and passing, any monetary gifts given to Melton Mortuary to help defray the funeral expenses will be greatly appreciated by the family.

Angel Marie Rosselaine Deal

RICHWOOD — Angel Marie Rosselanie Deal, 18, of Richwood, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with Pastor Jeff Dudley officiating.

Friends may call noon until time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Angel to her family orSimons-Coleman Funeral Home.

Vincent O’Connell Gallagher II

Vincent O’Connell Gallagher II, 66, of Shady Spring, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014.

Born October 15, 1947, in Beckley, he was the son of Doris Alma Martin Gallagher of Flat Top Lake and the late Vincent O’Connell Gallagher.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Powers Gallagher and his brother Joseph.

Vincent was a drafting designer for Bays, Inc. He was an avid gun collector and loved participating in Cowboy shooting matches. He was a member of Dawn’s Sportsman Club, Cowboy Fast Draw Association, Single Action Shooting Society and a life member of the NRA. He was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church.

Vincent will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family and friends, his support and leadership during times of crisis and his unfailing catholic faith. He was known to never say an unkind word.

In addition to his mother he is survived by brother, Michael Gallagher and wife Nancy of Barboursville, W.Va.; sisters, Rita Gallagher of Scott Depot, W.Va., Martha Baker and husband Wayne of Beckley; nieces and nephews, Andrew, Daniel, Thomas, Antonio, Mandy, Phillip, Anne,and Adell; great nieces and nephews, Michael, Violet, Caleb and Hattie.

A funeral liturgy will be recited at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus officiating. A rite of committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Calfee Funeral Home where a scripture prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. Don Wise.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Jones, Daniel Jones, Thomas Jones, Antonio Jones, Phillip Baker, Richard Cates, Jason Harmon and Frederick Mason.

PINEVILLE — Peachie Privett Henson, 89, of Pineville, passed away, Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

Gwen Hicks

Gwen Lee Hicks, 84, of Crab Orchard, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014, following a short illness.

Born August 5, 1929, at Affinity, she was the daughter of the late Beatrice Brown and Tom Severt.

Mrs. Hicks spent her life in Crab Orchard where she raised her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She enjoyed cooking for her family and watching after children. She happily devoted her life to taking care of others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Stewart Hicks in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Gregory Stewart Hicks Sr., of Crab Orchard; Grandson Gregory Stewart Hicks II of Crab Orchard; sister Alice Holtzapfel and husband, Everett of Crab Orchard; two brothers Jim Brown and wife, Janet of Crab Orchard, and Paul Brown of Crab Orchard;  an aunt, Yvonne Vaughn and husband ,Jim of Colorado; an uncle, Paul Lilly of Crab Orchard.

Service will be held 3 p.m. on Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. with Pastor Ernie Moye Jr officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. 

Friends may call an hour before the services at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Raleigh County Humane Society, 325 Grey Flats Road Beckley, WV 25801.

LOGAN — Charles “Freddie” Kinser, 30 of Logan, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014.

ROCK — Earl F. Lawrence, 70, of Rock, died Monday, May 5, 2014.

Patricia Gail Meadows

HINTON — Patricia Gail Meadows, 57, of Hinton, quietly and peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born March 2, 1957, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth E. Meadows and Mildred Waddell Meadows of Hinton.

Patricia had lived most of her life in Summers County. She was a 1976 graduate of Hinton High School. In her lifetime, she was a caregiver to many. Each of those that she gave care to, became her family, and she loved them dearly. She loved crocheting and reading. Patricia was an avid wrestling fan and a collector of teddy bears. Most of all, she loved going to church and spending time with her family.

Besides her father, Patricia was preceded in death by two half-sisters, Nancy L. Brown and Norma Jo (Penny) Conti.

Besides her mother, those left to cherish her memory are her sister; Deloris J. Allen and husband Jim; nephews, Jeff and wife Becca Ballengee, Nathan and wife Victoria Allen, Tony and wife Lori Conti, Mike and wife Carrie Conti, Chris and wife Melissa Conti, Scott and wife Amanda Conti, Ed and wife Kay Westbrook, and Steve Westbrook; nieces, Denise Allen, Nedra Allen, Ginger and husband Jeff Rushton; brothers-in-law, Graydon Brown, Richard Conti; special uncle, Norman Via; and aunts, Shelva Maleck and Dorthy Meadows. She was also survived by many cousins, great-nephews, and great-nieces.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m.  Friday, May 9, 2014, at First Baptist Church with Pastor Ronnie Cobb officiating. Friends may call the funeral parlors from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and one hour prior to service on Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Mike Conti, Chris Conti, Scott Conti, Jeff Ballengee, Nathan Allen; and brothers-in-law, Jim Allen and Richard Conti.

Patricia Ann Meyers, 76, of Beckley, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014.

Pauline Sexton

FRANKLIN — Pauline Sexton, age 93, of Franklin, formerly of Fayetteville, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Patricia Welch in Franklin.

She was born in Boyd County, Ky., on January 14, 1921, the daughter of the late Dennis and Etta (Burchett) Stephens. On June 8, 1940, Pauline married Sherman James Sexton, who preceded her in death in October 1980. 

Ms. Sexton attended Carter County Schools in Kentucky and was a retired Seamstress. She had worked for Highlander Dry Cleaners in Oak Hill. 

Ms. Sexton is survived by two daughters, Trenia Wooldridge of Zephyr Hills, Fla., Patricia Etta Welch of Franklin; a son, Steve Sherman and wife Trudy of Gillsville, Ga.; a brother, Harold Stephens of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Michael Renner, Brian Grose, Andrea Thompson, Colleen Plaugher, Robin Simmons, Dean Sexton, and Jimmy Sexton; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Gail “Susie” Renner on February 14, 2005.

Ms. Sexton’s family will receive friends on Friday, May 9, 2014, noon until 2 p.m. at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Funeral services will be on Friday, May 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Sam Harper and Rev. Morris Nutter officiating. Interment will be in the Huse  Memorial Park, Fayetteville.

Delores ‘Jean’ Smith

KOPPERSTON — Delores “Jean” Smith 74, departed this life Sunday, May 4, 2014, following a long illness.

Born June 20, 1939, in Cyclone she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Elsie Pearl Belcher.

Jean was a homemaker, a member of Sunrise Baptist Church, enjoyed crocheting and loved working puzzles. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Bryant.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Randy Lusk of Charlotte, NC., and Roman Smith of Welch; two daughters, Debbie Hall and husband, Ron of Crouches Farm and Ronica Cockrell and husband, Tim of Welch; two sisters, Phyllis Hendricks of Maryland and Carolyn Gillespie of Foster; five grandchildren, Tiffany Cook, Trey Brunty, Paige Walker, Dalton Price and Malachi Cockrell; four great-grandchildren, Alex Brunty, Gavin Cook, Rylee Walker and Karlee Walker; and a host of family and friends.

A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014, Adam Toler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Oza Mullens Jr. officiating.

In keeping with Jean’s wishes her body was cremated.

Carol Jean Biggs Stewart

MATHENY — Carol Jean Biggs Stewart, 79, of Matheny, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born February 4, 1935, in Ameagle, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Van Biggs and Leona Harris Biggs.

Ms. Stewart was a homemaker. She was famous for her roast beef and gravy and potato salad.

She was an avid bowler and was a member of several bowling leagues. She was a member of the Oceana Woman’s Club and the Homemaker’s Club.

Ms. Stewart was a lifetime member of Matheny United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Stacy Edward Stewart. Her brothers, Roy Biggs and Earl Biggs and a nephew, Roger Biggs also preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lori Stewart of Oceana; grandchildren, Rebecca Stewart and her companion Josh Lusk of Lynco, Matthew Kyle Stewart of England, and Staci Anne Stewart of Athens; brother, Frank Biggs and his wife Geri of California a sister, Kay Stewart and her husband Troy of Huntington; two sisters-in-law, Pat Biggs of Matheny and Edna Biggs of Glen Fork; special friends, Murl Darnell, Sabrina Adams, Tammy Blankenship and Dorothy Brooks; a host of nieces and nephews; and Lauren and Jordan Manning, of Oceana, who were very dear to her heart.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, in the Evans Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Sheri Kernik officiating. Interment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny. Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 9 at the funeral home.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

A special “Thank You” to the nursing staff at Bowers Hospice House for taking such good care of our dear loved one and to the nurses who cared for her at home.
